Pepping Up for Pepper Festival

Pepping Up for Pepper Festival

October 2, 2013January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Clairemont Client News, In Our Community6th Annual Pittsboro Pepper Festival, Briar Chapel, Food Festivals, Green, North Carolina Festivals, Pepper Festival, Sustainability, The Abundance Foundation

Here at Clairemont, we love supporting the local community, and what better way to do that than to attend the 6th Annual Pepper Festival, which celebrates sustainable agriculture, farmers, renewable energy and the creativity of the Piedmont’s chefs, brewers and artisans?

The Pepper Festival, sponsored by The Abundance Foundation and hosted by Briar Chapel (client), is the epitome of peppery-goodness and love of all things local. What started in 2008 as a small gathering of friends and family tasting Farmer Doug’s different varieties of sweet bell peppers has today evolved into an epicurean spectacle involving more than 30 food and beverage masters, local farmers, artists, entertainers and more.

The only rule for Pepper Festival? Come hungry! With the purchase of a ticket, you’ll receive an endless supply of pepper-themed dishes from some of the Piedmont’s best chefs, like those from Herons at The Umstead Hotel & Spa, 518 West and La Residence (better known as La Rez to our Chapel Hill folk). Additionally, you’ll have the chance to sip pepper-infused brews and local beers and wines from Top of the Hill, Carolina Brewery and Benjamin Vineyards & Winery, among others.

Plus, you can listen to live music from three great local bands (Big Fat Gap, Loamlands and Steph Stewart and the Boyfriends) and visit interactive displays for kids and adults about local farms, renewable energy and the abundance of great local food in and around the Triangle.

So, come on out to test your taste buds and expand your palate on Sunday, Oct. 6 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Boulder Park in Briar Chapel, Chapel Hill, N.C. Tickets are available for $30 prior to the event or for $35 at the gate. Bonus: kids under 12 get in free!

We hope you’ll come celebrate and support The Abundance Foundation and our local farmers while the whole family enjoys great food, live music and just some plain ole fashioned fun all around!  And, with the likes of the menu listed below, who could resist attending this delicious event?

Sparking Creative Thought and New Ideas

Sparking Creative Thought and New Ideas

September 16, 2013January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Professional Development, Raleigh PR Agencyart, Artpsace, First Fridays, SparkCon3 Comments on Sparking Creative Thought and New Ideas

One of the benefits of being a Raleigh PR agency is that when we need creative inspiration, all we have to do is walk out our door and rely on our highly innovative, imaginative and artistic community. From places such as Artspace (which I’m happy to support as a new board member) to regular events like First Fridays and annual happenings such as SparkCon, there’s no shortage of thought-provoking visuals and activities.

In addition to hearing Mayor McFarlane speak during PechaKucha night, attending the worldwide book release of “Man v. Liver” at the Mahler Fine Art Gallery, checking out a Civil Rights photo exhibition and getting a front row seat to the creation of some pretty awesome sidewalk art, our team attempted to answer the question “What Are Your Roots,” an exhibition at CAM.

I think their answers demonstrate the whole point of why we regularly push our chairs away from our desks, silence our mobile devices and get out there and allow our community to open our minds and motivate us to see things in a different light.

What to Wear to a Job Interview

What to Wear to a Job Interview

August 23, 2013January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Fashion, Free Adviceentry-level PR job, entry-level PR position, interns, Interview Attire, Interview Outfit, PR Agency, PR Internships, PR jobs, Raleigh PR Agency, Raleigh Public Relations Agency

I’m a big believer in the mantra “dress for success.” And, although it’s not yet scientifically proven, I am pretty positive that you will always feel more confident and secure if you are dressed in a crisp, clean and appropriate outfit. This especially rings true for job and internship interviews.

As the internship coordinator at Clairemont, I’ve seen plenty of interview candidates – and often been one myself in the (somewhat) recent past. For an interviewer, few things are more distracting than an inappropriately dressed or sloppy candidate. For a job hunter, dressing the part for an interview can be just as stressful. Is this too dressy? Is this too casual? Is this too boring? As a college student seeking internships and jobs, I often asked myself these questions. From experience (on both sides of the interview table), this is what I have decided.

Sporting a suit should always be your first choice. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should fit well without being too revealing. For women candidates, this can be a skirt or pant suit, or the alternative suiting dress, like this one from J.Crew. Suits are classic and classy and show you are serious about the job. For more inspiration, see our Interview Appropriate board on Pinterest.

If a suit feels too stiff for the occasion, opt for a tailored pencil skirt or pair of slacks, a blouse and a cardigan or blazer. For a creative job in an agency setting, take the opportunity to show your individuality with statement accessories or a fashionable blazer like this one from Nordstrom. We also love this simple pencil dress with subtle leather detailing from Asos.

In the end though, don’t ever minimalism the fact that this outfit is for a job interview. Being fashionable is great, but making a good first impression and landing your dream job is way better. Steer clear of anything too short, too tight or too low-cut. Always err on the side of conservative caution, and you’re sure to be dressed for success. (Here’s a hint: If you’re stuck for ideas on what to wear, check out this fabulous blog stock full of great office attire and where to buy each of the pieces!)

Three Cheers/Barks for Pawgust First Friday!

August 8, 2013January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Professional Development, The Clairemont TeamClairemont Communications, Counselors Academy, networking, PR, PR Agency, professional development, PRSA's Counselors Academy, Public Relations, Public Relations Agency, Raleigh PR Agency, Raleigh Public Relations Agency

Last week marked August First Friday in downtown Raleigh, and Clairemont celebrated the occasion by hosting our own special event at The Clairemont House – Pawgust First Friday. Part networking, part professional development, part tear-jerking and part tail-wagging, the event was a huge success, especially because we were able to raise money for a local pet charity very near and dear to the Clairemont family’s heart: the SPCA of Wake County.

At the event, local PR professionals and friends gathered to network and listen to two dog-inspired presentations given by Clairemont CEO, Dana Hughens, and HMA Public Relations general manager/vice president, Abbie Fink. Reading a blog post written by Clairemont’s top-dog, Billy, Dana shared 10 social media tips for success, like creating leash-free environments on Facebook, being the master of your territory and riding with your head out the window (make sure to check out the blog to see what all of these mean for your social media strategy!).

Visiting all the way from Phoenix, Ariz., Abbie did an encore performance of the highly rated ignite-style speech she presented at the 2013 PRSA Counselors Academy Conference. A love letter to her late dog, Viva, Abbie didn’t leave a dry eye in the house as she talked about the love of a dog and its owner and the hard decisions you sometimes have to make.

At the end of the evening, guests voted for a local pet charity to donate the Pawgust First Friday event proceeds to, and we are happy to say that the SPCA of Wake County was selected! You see, the oh so loveable chief motivational officer at Clairemont Communication and Hughens family dog, Billy, was adopted from the Wake SPCA so we were thrilled that our guests decided to help give back to such a great local organization.

All in all, the event was a blast, and we would like to thank everyone who came out and made it a success!
