How Brands Get the Ha-Has

How Brands Get the Ha-Has

November 6, 2020July 15, 2022 Clairemont InternBlog, Marketing, Wonderfully Randomcomedy, humor, Marketing, target marketing, TwitterLeave a Comment on How Brands Get the Ha-Has

The way to a consumer’s heart might just be through his or her funny bone. Using humor in marketing breaks down walls and showcases a brand’s one-of-a-kind personality. When it comes to captivating comedy, what brands have landed the laughs with their target audience?

All About Brand Awareness

The driving motivation behind advertising efforts is to generate brand awareness with memorable campaigns that ultimately drive sales, of course. While some might say doing business leaves little room for humor, integrating a splash of silliness is proven to foster meaningful connections between consumers and a brand. The use of comedy not only serves to build brand identity, but humor marketing also gives a brand its own personality and air of authenticity.

Which Brands Have Struck Their Audience’s Funny Bone?

When a brand successfully leverages comedy to resonate with an audience, people take notice. In 2010, Old Spice made a bold decision that saved its brand during the Superbowl commercial break. A men’s grooming products brand, Old Spice advertised to the female partners of the men that would be the purchasers of Old Spice products. The viral marketing campaign, “the man your man could smell like,” garnered 220,000 YouTube views in a matter of hours after launching.

The marketing genius behind this madness?

Humor, audience engagement and tons of quality content. Old Spice invited social media users on various platforms to submit questions to ask the “Old Spice Man” that would go live in an ad. People loved it, and the ads garnered attention, excitement and interest without relatively low cost and effort. Positive exposure for a brand because of a man cracking cool comments in front of a shower? That’s the beauty of humor marketing.

What other brands have successfully dabbled in comedy?

State Farm’s beloved Jake from State Farm, the quirky, potty-humored ads from the Dollar Shave Club and Clorox’s jokes about situations where you might need a Clorox wipe are all fantastic examples of the potential of humor marketing.

Sarcasm Status: Trending

Twitter has normalized a casual, sarcastic tone for its users, giving brands an opportunity to capitalize on a casual marketing medium while showcasing a different part of their brands’ voices and personas.

Wendy’s has earned a reputation on Twitter for being sassy, sarcastic and downright hilarious. While Wendy’s television and print advertising tactics might blend in with any other fast food joint, Wendy’s Twitter account has earned the brand a whole new level of awareness. From Tweets like, “Hey @McDonald’s, roast us.” to sassy exchanges with the Burger King Twitter account, Wendy’s has amassed a huge following, all because of its form of humor.

Wendy’s isn’t the only brand to recognize the beauty of Twitter’s casual essence. Moon Pie has perfected the art of offhand hilarity with its tweets. This strategy has worked so well for its brand recognition that people who don’t even eat Moon Pies still give them a follow, including me!

The Impact of Empathy

Especially amidst a pandemic, humor in marketing can both boost a brand and serve as a much needed breath of fresh air. According to an excerpt from a Marketing Week article, “There’s an old Vaudeville expression that laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

One of the main goals of marketing is to connect with an audience and to empathize with them. Humor can accomplish this, bridging the gap between a brand and its audience. Author Andrew Tarvin once said, “Both humor and marketing are about communication … If you get a consumer to laugh, you get them to listen. If you get them to listen, you get them to learn, and ultimately act.”

If a brand can make an emotional connection by mixing compassion and humor together, it will establish itself positively in the mind of its audience. Here are a few brands that have managed to create content that does just that.

Who knew the audiovisual industry was so huge? After spending five days at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) trade show in the Netherlands, I learned that there is a lot more to speakers, projectors and TVs than we all think, and ISE, the largest AV trade show in the world, proves it.

Last week, I took a hiatus from UNC, Clairemont and my everyday life to travel to Amsterdam with rAVe [Publications], an all-digital publication and marketing company that serves both the commercial and residential industries. As a reporter for the company, my job was to title and upload more than 1,000 product videos featuring everything from smart home technology to a virtual dressing room.

For those of you who have never attended a trade show, it’s an unforgettable experience. Here’s what I learned from my time with rAVe at ISE:

1. When communicating, remember your audience: Although the official language of the trade show was English, there were many international companies present from all over the world. As a North Carolina native, I tend to talk fast with a typical Southern accent. When shooting videos with international vendors, many encouraged me to slow down and articulate, which I perfected after a few booths. Communication is key in this industry, and it’s vital to keep in mind the culture and language barriers in any professional environment.

2. Take breaks: Sitting in front of a computer can make your head hurt, and being on your feet all day can drain you. Whether you’re working in an office, restaurant or trade show, it’s important to take a walk, drink a coffee or grab a snack to refresh your mind. At Clairemont, we value a break from our work to re-energize — a concept that I certainly practiced at the trade show by making a loop around the convention center or treating myself to a Nutella crepe.

3. Teamwork is key: Just like in every industry, it’s important to remember that you are part of a team. This was definitely true for my time with rAVe. If one member of the team wasn’t on her game, everyone suffered. Having a supportive, creative team made my experience in Amsterdam unforgettable, and I learned how important it is to work with caring people. This is definitely true at Clairemont; I am surrounded by colleagues I love to see when I come to work.

The last bit of advice taken from my time in Amsterdam is to be present. During my travels, I had a difficult time concentrating on enjoying my time abroad, and instead I spent a lot of time thinking about all the things on my to-do list when I returned home. In work, in school, in travel and in life, it’s important to focus on the tasks in front of you instead of stressing about the next day. So take a deep breath, go for a walk and get to it!

Editor’s Note: This is the second year in a row that a Clairemont intern has been accepted for this project. We understand that it is a prestigious assignment, and we are so proud of Kaitlyn Goforth, the author of this post. Last year, Sam Halle wrote about her experience in a post called (S)Amsterdam.

The Beauty of Raleigh PR: Day 23 – DQ Cakes

February 9, 2015July 15, 2022 Jasmin SessomsBlog, Entry-Level PR Job, Raleigh PR Agency, Wonderfully RandomRestaurant PR, the clairemont team, Triangle DQLeave a Comment on The Beauty of Raleigh PR: Day 23 – DQ Cakes

Sprinkles and icing and cakes! Oh my! Yesterday, the Clairemont team hosted a Frozen-themed Valentine’s Day event for one of our beloved clients,  Triangle Dairy Queen. After much planning and preparing, the day had finally approached us. Dairy Queen is famed for its ice cream cakes, and we wanted to give them an official introduction to our friends at Clairemont.

This event turned into a bona fide cake-decorating, finger-licking, Queen-Elsa-spotting party. Kids of all ages flocked from near and far to decorate a sweet treat for their moms and dads. With a little inspiration from the Dairy Queen team, cake beautifying began.

I think that the most gratifying moment of this event was to see the children’s faces brighten when they spotted their favorite Disney character, Queen Elsa, walk up to aid with their designs. What makes DQ cakes so special? All of the cakes at the Triangle Dairy Queen locations are made fresh in-house and are fully customizable for every occasion.

For more than 70 years, DQ has been crafting delicious treats for the entire family. The key to Dairy Queen’s success is simple: a combination of hard-working staff and great-tasting food. With three Triangle locations under our client’s belt, he and his staff are strongly embedded in the local culture and enjoy giving back to the community.

Although much has changed in the world since Dairy Queen’s inception, one constant has remained: DQ restaurants are still the place to find friends celebrating a birthday, stopping by after a date or simply enjoying a sweet treat. If you can’t think of a gift for Valentine’s Day, pop into Dairy Queen and request a custom-made ice cream cake for your sweetie. Dairy Queen’s scrumptious flavors combined with the staff’s boundless design expertise will provide the perfect treat to “heat up” your holiday.

A Letter to my 18-Year-Old Self

Dear Younger Self,

Right now, I know you are focused on who likes you and maybe even how you will fit in at school. The summer is ending and college awaits you. I know that college seems intimidating and you fear rejection. Don’t fret, my dear, you will do just fine.

You fear disappointing your parents. I want to tell you that it will be okay. Your parents couldn’t be more proud of you. Everything you’ve ever wanted is over there on the other side.

There’s independence. Acceptance. There’s college and a career — one with dignity and a livable wage. There are friends ones that you will cherish; the best you’ll ever have. There is love, so much love from the ones that matter most. There are tests and trials. There is some failure. Oh, my darling, there are some rainy days. Some days you will feel so blue, know that trouble doesn’t last always and you will pull through.

Here’s what you need to know or what you already know but may not fully believe just yet:

What if I told you that next year you would step out of your circle of friends and run for Miss Sophomore, representing the entire class of 2015? What if I told you that you would win? What if I told you that this accomplishment would open so many doors for you in the university?

How about if I told you that in three and a half years you would graduate early with honors? Jasmin, you are the first in your family to finish in less than four years.

What if I told you that on your graduation day, your future boss would send you an email requesting to meet you? What if I told you that in two short weeks you would enter the working world with a full-time job? That one email would be the start of a brand new career.

So walk on campus with your head high and shoulders back. It will all come together soon.

With all of my love,

Your older self
