Oh Momma Monday: Starr Ratto, Videri Chocolate Factory

November 30, 2015January 31, 2023 Tracy LathanBlog, In Our Community, Oh Momma Monday, Starting a businessbusiness PR, entrepreneurship PR, Marketing, Raleigh business, Raleigh PR, videri chocolate

I can’t think of anything sweeter than owning a chocolate factory. Sam and Starr Ratto, owners of downtown Raleigh favorite, Videri Chocolate Factory, made their dream a reality when they opened their doors in the Historic Train Depot back in early 2012. How Starr has managed to help launch and grow the business while starting a family and raising their young son, Salem, is an inspiring story. We recently connected with Starr who shared her secret to “keeping her cup full” along with some of her favorite downtown Raleigh hotspots.

What is your occupation/business?

I co-own Videri Chocolate Factory with my husband Sam.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Sam is born to make amazing chocolate from the bean, and I am born for customer service.

Starr 3

How has your career/professional life changed since becoming a mom?

I found out that I was pregnant 10 days after we opened Videri Chocolate Factory. Ha. My visions of 12-hour days starting a new business quickly became unreasonable. For the first time something physical dictated my ability to do what I had in my mind.

Any tips for juggling work and motherhood?

My best tip is to figure out your childcare plan early. I didn’t do this and struggled the first year trying to make a plan.

Most important thing motherhood has taught you…

You gotta roll with it. Just when I think I have it all figured out, everything changes. Motherhood has also taught me that I sometimes need to take a few minutes for me. I saw a quote the other day that has been rattling around in my head. It says, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” That really stopped me in my tracks. I let my cup get too empty too often.

Starr 1

Describe your personal style…

When I close my eyes and envision my style, it is somewhere around a 1970 Bonnie Raitt or Maggie Gyllenhaal’s character in Crazy Heart. But in real life it is great jeans and a Videri T-Shirt or something with stripes. My new power shirt is a striped long-sleeved with shirttails sewn on from J. Crew. If I do anything nice, chances are I will wear that!

What is a favorite place you have visited or trip you have taken?

I really love our annual trip to the Northwest Chocolate Festival in Seattle. Not only is it a very exciting week for the business, but Seattle is one of my favorite cities. I love how it feels like everyone there wants everyone else to succeed. This year I stayed two days after the convention totally alone and wandered around and did nothing!

What do you enjoy doing when you have down time?

I really enjoyed watching Parenthood and am sad that it is over. I also took Trapeze class at Cirque de Vol for a year, and that was awesome. Trapeze is so hard that you physically couldn’t focus on anything else for that hour.

What are your favorite Raleigh hotspots?

I can’t get enough of the Pina Colada (and the food of course) at Bida Manda right now. I also have vowed to do most of my Christmas shopping at Flight Raleigh, the new pop-up shop downtown. It is a partnership between two of my already favorite spots, Deco and Edge of Urge.

What are three of your “faves” right now?

I have a vanilla latte every single day at Videri. I finally got a pair of boots with a heel that I can wear all day (Korks at Belk!). I have also promised myself that I am going to indulge in a monthly housecleaner in 2016! Y’all hold me to it.

Oh Momma Monday – Mom’s the Word

Oh Momma Monday – Mom’s the Word

February 9, 2015January 31, 2023 Tracy LathanBlog, Oh Momma Monday, Owning a Business, Starting a businessmommy bloggers, momtrepreneurs, motherhood, Raleigh moms

It’s been said that being a mom is the hardest job in world. As the mother of a two-year-old and a four-year-old, I agree whole-heartedly with that statement. I am in the weeds. I’m trying to balance work and family, school schedules and new business presentations. Some days I feel I can barely keep my head above water. Funny part is, I wouldn’t change a thing.

For those of you who know what life is like with young children, you probably think the idea of starting a business at this stage in life seems crazy. But the army of Momtrepreneurs, or so they’ve been called, is growing strong. I love this recent article, Mothers of Invention, in Walter magazine highlighting local moms who saw an opportunity and took a chance. What inspiring stories!

The truth is, we see these women everyday. They are friends, neighbors, sisters and PTA moms. They are passionate and smart and want to share their talents, but also seek flexibility and choose to spend the time they are working outside the home doing something they truly love. And often times, these new business ventures are born from a realization that there must be an easier way to do something. I sure wish I was the one who invented the fruit and veggie squeeze pouches my kids love.

Do you know momtrepreneurs or other amazing moms you’d like to see profiled here? If so, please let us know!

Lessons from the Lemonade Stand — What My 10 Yr Old Knows About Branding & Marketing

June 6, 2012January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Marketing, Starting a businessbranding, entrepreneur, Marketing, PR, Starting a business16 Comments on Lessons from the Lemonade Stand — What My 10 Yr Old Knows About Branding & Marketing
Sporting the official Neighborhood Lemonade shirt.

I learn a lot from my son. The extended remix title for this post is “Lesson from the Lemonade Stand — What You Can Learn From My 10 Year Old About Branding, Marketing, Business and Life.” 🙂 So listen up… this is good stuff.

My son has been offering his parents a steady stream of business ideas since he was able to talk. While adding another choice in Raleigh PR agencies wasn’t one of them, it is true that his entrepreneurial enthusiasm certainly inspired me and was a factor in my decision to start Clairemont Communications. He is not shy about offering ideas for the agency and our clients, and he continues to dream up a variety of dream businesses of his own. The latest: a good old-fashioned lemonade stand.

I’ve watched my son set up shop at the end of our driveway for several weeks now, and I realized what a smart business person and marketer he is! I’m compelled to share these lessons from the lemonade stand.

  1. Know your audience and cater to them. First, let’s talk hours and location. You might think that the lemonade stand was located at the end of our driveway for convenience only. Think again. The combination of the location and hours of operation — mid-morning to early afternoon on Sundays — was quite strategic. There’s a church in our neighborhood, and one of the two entrances can be accessed at the end of our street. The kid recognized a high-traffic opportunity. Now, let’s talk promotions. On Mother’s Day, he posted “Moms drink free” signs. Think about it. Mom might not be dying for a lemonade, but what dad or kid is going to let that opportunity pass. Of course, they want a cup, too!
  2. Establish your brand. Somewhere between scooping ice and pouring lemonade that very first day, my son realized the business needed a name. Neighborhood Lemonade was born, and when he closed up shop that afternoon, he immediately sat down and drew a logo. Some smart bartering with a more experienced designer and professional marketer (his dad) allowed him to obtain a digital representation of his logo. By the next week, he and his assistant (another neighborhood boy he recruited to work with him) were outfitted in official Neighborhood Lemonade shirts with the logo on the front and “staff” on the back. I believe it was the same day they added a delivery by bicycle service. (Back to point #1.)
  3. Capture your customer data. I, of course, adore my child and think he is the smartest human being on the planet. But let me tell you, he knocked my socks off when he thought to do something that many of our clients — even the large, international brands — sometimes struggle to do. I’ve tried to give him his space and watch from afar, but on the third or fourth week in business, I happened to be standing close enough to hear him interacting with a customer. He poured the lemonade, accepted her 50 cents and she took her first sip while he waited to make sure she was a satisfied customer. And then, he was BRILLIANT. Brilliant, I say! With his iTouch in his hand, he asked the customer, “Would you like to give me your email address so that I may notify you about future promotions and special events?” Tarnation Jed, I birthed a marketing genius!!! Customer data, people. Collect it. Use it.
  4. When life gives you lemons… or when your lemonade stand comes crumbling down in the blink of an eye, stay focused. Over the weeks, the stand started becoming more elaborate. It’s the way of the Hughens men. They are creators and tweakers. (I think my father-in-law is designing some sort of double-decker lemonade stand for my son as I type this.) Anyway, what started as a pitcher on a cardboard box grew to our glass-top patio table with umbrella, fancy signs and a variety of other added details. In a flash, a small gust of wind bent the umbrella and shattered glass went everywhere. Instead of going into a million pieces along with the glass top, my son quickly got another table from our back porch, helped clean up and it was business as usual. The next time I feel like things are falling apart, I will remember how calm he remained and how the idea of quitting NEVER crossed his mind.

These ideas are fairly simply — as basic, really, as a lemonade stand itself. If you have a new business or are starting a business, make sure these things are on your checklist of necessities. If you work with an established brand that has overlooked these considerations or it has been some time since you thought about your customers, your brand and how you interact with customers, it might be time to get back to the basics. Sometimes having an outsider’s view is helpful, and it happens to be summer. Let me know if you want to book a meeting with my son. 🙂

Green Thought Thursday: My Brother’s Green Thumb

August 4, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Starting a business
One view of the project, appropriately entitled “Artist Backyard”

I am proud of my big brother Shep, and I don’t say it enough! Today’s Green Thought Thursday is inspired by him and his work with fellow NC State Landscape Architecture and horticultural science graduate students.

In a class led by Professor Andrew Fox, Shep and his classmates spent 10 weeks designing and then installing a rain garden for State’s campus. What is a rain garden, you may ask? Simply put, it’s a garden that uses deep-rooted plants and grasses to capture runoff from roofs and paved surfaces. In this case, the water is filtered through the garden before ultimately entering the university’s drainage systems. Not only do gardens like these prevent erosion; they also play a role in removing pollutants from the runoff.

Another look at “Artist Backyard”

Shep was very enthusiastic to talk to me about the project and its extra benefits. He told me that perhaps the garden’s most important purpose will be an educational one. It’s really interactive and hands-on, he said. Students in the nearby dorms will have a chance to learn first-hand about an important sustainability practice and maybe will even be inspired to one day build one for themselves.

If you have a chance, stop by and see the garden. It’s located on State’s campus between the Owen and Turlington dormitories just off of Cates Avenue. I am going to make it a point to stop by sometime soon. I am so proud of my brother and his hard work!
