Using Clubhouse in Business Strategy

If you’ve checked the news over the past few weeks, you’ve probably seen the frenzy surrounding Clubhouse. Clubhouse is an invite-only iPhone App where individuals can host and join conversations. The app functions using only audio; there are no pictures or videos in the conversation rooms.

At its core, Clubhouse is a social media platform and a space for the exchange of thoughts and ideas. Unlike some other social platforms, Clubhouse isn’t dominated by influencers. Anyone can host a conversation room, gain followers and make an impact. 

Currently, initial Clubhouse invitees are only allowed to give out a few invites to the platform. This number is expected to increase as Clubhouse slowly accepts more users onto the platform. 

If Clubhouse continues on this similar path, the app will be a must-have for your business. In May 2020, the app had 1,500 users and was worth $100 million. As of February 2021, Clubhouse has skyrocketed to 2 million users with an estimated worth of $1 billion.

Grow your social media presence. 

While you can only interact with other users using audio, Clubhouse links your social media accounts in your user profile. Sharing your social media handles with other leaders in the industry is a great way to build a relevant follower base. This organic exposure can help your business maintain a stable presence and forge lasting relationships. 

Develop your business model. 

Some of the world’s most influential thought leaders are active on Clubhouse. Just the other week, Elon Musk hopped into a Clubhouse room to grill Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev on the app’s recent role in the GameStop Wall Street debacle. The opportunity to hear from influential leaders in your industry also gives your business the chance to take notes, learn and improve your business model.

Like most things in life, the more creative and imaginative you are, the more attention you’ll grab.

Foster relevant connections.

While you can certainly leverage Clubhouse to build your social following, you can also take this a step further to find people with particular skill sets that meet your business needs. 

An entrepreneur who recently wrote an article for Forbes Magazine about Clubhouse mentioned that he hired a new employee after connecting on Clubhouse. A lawyer using Clubhouse mentioned to the Social Media Examiner that she has gained upward of 20 new clients from hosting a Clubhouse meeting. Make the most of Clubhouse and use it as a platform to search for individuals with talent that can benefit your business.

I can’t think of anything sweeter than owning a chocolate factory. Sam and Starr Ratto, owners of downtown Raleigh favorite, Videri Chocolate Factory, made their dream a reality when they opened their doors in the Historic Train Depot back in early 2012. How Starr has managed to help launch and grow the business while starting a family and raising their young son, Salem, is an inspiring story. We recently connected with Starr who shared her secret to “keeping her cup full” along with some of her favorite downtown Raleigh hotspots.

What is your occupation/business?

I co-own Videri Chocolate Factory with my husband Sam.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Sam is born to make amazing chocolate from the bean, and I am born for customer service.

How has your career/professional life changed since becoming a mom?

I found out that I was pregnant 10 days after we opened Videri Chocolate Factory. Ha. My visions of 12-hour days starting a new business quickly became unreasonable. For the first time something physical dictated my ability to do what I had in my mind.

Any tips for juggling work and motherhood?

My best tip is to figure out your childcare plan early. I didn’t do this and struggled the first year trying to make a plan.

Most important thing motherhood has taught you…

You gotta roll with it. Just when I think I have it all figured out, everything changes. Motherhood has also taught me that I sometimes need to take a few minutes for me. I saw a quote the other day that has been rattling around in my head. It says, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” That really stopped me in my tracks. I let my cup get too empty too often.

Describe your personal style…

When I close my eyes and envision my style, it is somewhere around a 1970 Bonnie Raitt or Maggie Gyllenhaal’s character in Crazy Heart. But in real life it is great jeans and a Videri T-Shirt or something with stripes. My new power shirt is a striped long-sleeved with shirttails sewn on from J. Crew. If I do anything nice, chances are I will wear that!

What is a favorite place you have visited or trip you have taken?

I really love our annual trip to the Northwest Chocolate Festival in Seattle. Not only is it a very exciting week for the business, but Seattle is one of my favorite cities. I love how it feels like everyone there wants everyone else to succeed. This year I stayed two days after the convention totally alone and wandered around and did nothing!

What do you enjoy doing when you have down time?

I really enjoyed watching Parenthood and am sad that it is over. I also took Trapeze class at Cirque de Vol for a year, and that was awesome. Trapeze is so hard that you physically couldn’t focus on anything else for that hour.

What are your favorite Raleigh hotspots?

I can’t get enough of the Pina Colada (and the food of course) at Bida Manda right now. I also have vowed to do most of my Christmas shopping at Flight Raleigh, the new pop-up shop downtown. It is a partnership between two of my already favorite spots, Deco and Edge of Urge.

What are three of your “faves” right now?

I have a vanilla latte every single day at Videri. I finally got a pair of boots with a heel that I can wear all day (Korks at Belk!). I have also promised myself that I am going to indulge in a monthly housecleaner in 2016! Y’all hold me to it.

We are fortunate to live in a community with so many inspiring female business owners, entrepreneurs, bloggers and professionals. What I find truly amazing is that many of these women are also running households and raising young children. I, for one, am always looking for tips on how working moms are able to juggle everything. So during the next few months, Oh Momma Monday will be sharing a view into the lives of some of these busy women. Hopefully, something you read here inspires you!

Tori Fox wears many hats – entrepreneur, business owner, wife, mother of two young girls, motivator. In the spring of 2014, Tori opened Barre3 Raleigh-Five Points and since day one has been changing the lives, bodies and minds of women across the Triangle. Her positive energy is infectious – I was hooked after the first class! We were able to catch up with Tori to find out what inspired her to start her business and how she manages to maintain a healthy balance.

What is your occupation/business?

Owner, Barre3 Raleigh – Five Points

What inspired you to start your own business?

I knew what I wanted didn’t exist in Raleigh. So it was up to me to get it here. In a word – passion.

How has your career/professional life changed since becoming a mom?

It’s a lot more challenging to have a career once children enter the picture. I stayed at home until my youngest daughter was two and my oldest was five. If I’m perfectly honest, I have a lot of guilt when I’m working because I’m not with my kids and guilt when I’m with my kids that I have so much work to do. However, I wouldn’t trade either for the world. It just requires a lot of juggling.

Any tips for juggling work and motherhood?

I’m really working on being more present…present when I’m at work and present when I’m with my kids. It helps with the aforementioned guilt. Additionally, we live by the calendar.

Most important thing motherhood has taught you…

To appreciate the little things. My girls notice everything and often we must stop whatever we are doing (whether we are late or not) to admire things. Sometimes you just have to stop, take a breath and look at the beautiful things around you.

Describe your personal style.

Ah, I love jeans, comfy flats and soft t-shirts, but you usually find me in work-out clothes.

What is your philosophy regarding healthy eating/lifestyle?

Moderation! I do not deprive myself of my favorite comfort foods, but I don’t over indulge. We eat organic fruits, vegetables and meats whenever possible. We stay away from dairy (except my husband) unless it’s too good to pass up.

Obviously, I love exercise. In addition to teaching Barre3, I take it. Nothing feels as great as a sore tush. I love a great run, and I’m also exploring yoga these days.

What is a favorite place you have visited or trip you have taken?

Positano, Italy. The culture is so easy going, the scenery is breath-taking and the food is fresh, local and delicious.

What do you enjoy doing when you have down time? (Does that ever really happen?)

Sleep! Ha. Seriously, my favorite thing is travel.

What are your favorite Raleigh hotspots? 

My husband and I really enjoyed Death and Taxes. You’ll find me at b.good Raleigh 3-5 times a week grabbing lunch. I love Glenwood Grill bar for dinner with my good friend. The bartender, Chad, is the best. Umstead Spa. Acupuncture at Bloom Integrative Health. Dr. Dishman is fabulous!

What are three of your “faves” right now? 

Harvest Kale Salad at b.good Raleigh-add chicken and avocado, Rag n Bone Boyfriend Jeans (thank you, Style Hawk) and playing “Spot it” with my kids before bed. Gracie is finally old enough to participate.

When Snapchat was established almost four years ago, the premise was simple: correspond with friends via photos that last up to 10 seconds before they disappear. This type of technology has given social media a kind of impermanence discussed by Nathan Jurgenson in a post published on Snapchat’s blog.

Temporary Content: A New Side to Social Media

Snapchat introduced a concept known as “temporary social media.” Though a revolutionary approach, this idea also opened the doors for a more risqué use of the app, replacing the potential with an inappropriate stigma. In addition to the reputation Snapchat gained, there was that pesky little hack revealing that users’ photos were not deleted forever after 10 seconds, but instead these photos could be saved by friends unbeknownst to the users and uploaded online.

No longer was the reputation simply hearsay, but now consumers were legitimately concerned. Snapchat had to act quickly and effectively to restore its image. Over the course of its four-year run, Snapchat has evolved from a “sexting” app to business and lifestyle tool. Snapchat has foregone any illusion that users are unable to capture images, now alerting consumers when a friend takes a screen shot of their photo.

Stories: The Personal Side

The My Story feature, added in October of 2013, allowed users to share clips from their days with their friends. Disappearing after 24 hours, the My Story feature invited creativity with a literal day-to-day look at someone’s life. My Story created an environment where celebrities could enter the Snapchat world and allow their fans to see a personal and informal side of their lives.

Snapchat has become much more than a “selfie” app. In August of 2014 Snapchat launched Our Story— an expansion building off of the My Story foundation. This was the first time that users could see photos and videos from strangers around the world on their My Story feed. The premise of Our Story is to invite the collaboration of the Snapchat community in a particular part of the world to provide a glimpse into its daily life. Originally launched for the Electric Daisy Carnival, the feature allowed festival goers to upload their snaps for anyone to see. Snapchat’s next step was to expand to college campuses, establishing the application’s target demographic.

Discover: The Business Side

As Snapchat continues to evolve, the question becomes how they can appeal to a more professional audience as opposed to “selfie-obsessed teenagers?” The answer came in January when Snapchat introduced Discover. This addition to Snapchat allowed corporations–including the likes of Yahoo!, People, National Geographic, CNN and ESPN–to create interactive daily stories. The debut of this new feature allows users to stay updated with the latest headlines, scores and fashion trends all in the same place.

Of course the next factor in the equation is how small businesses can effectively use Snapchat. Perhaps it will come by way of the My Story feature with businesses using it to give clients a look into their everyday work lives. Maybe one day Our Story will showcase young professionals working in different cities around the world or will feature local businesses.

The future for Snapchat and small business is unsure, but one thing is certain: Snapchat has proven that it knows no limits, and this limitless mindset is what keeps it exciting.
