Award-Winning Social Media Campaigns

The trends and best strategies for social media campaigns seem to change faster than our Facebook feed, but that’s an exciting challenge for us at Clairemont Communications. We’ve received 20 awards over the years in social media –eight Sir Walter Raleigh awards from the Raleigh Public Relations Society and an even dozen InSpire awards from the North Carolina chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (NCPRSA).

The InSpire Social Media awards we’ve received every year since 2011 include four Best in Category or Best in Show awards for one of our first social media clients, Thomasville Furniture. We began managing the company’s Facebook page in July 2010 at a time when social media for business was relatively new, after confirming Facebook’s potential as a customer engagement channel.

Established in 1904, Thomasville Furniture is a leading name in the home furnishings industry. We helped the company honor its long history by visually documenting its milestones with historic photos on its About page.

At the same time, we developed strategies to help younger customers understand Thomasville Furniture as a fashionable brand as well as a venerable one. Videos featuring younger actors and a more relaxed feel, and creative content about interior design increased the company’s 18 to 34-year old Facebook fans from 20 percent to 30 percent of the total fan base.

Our work with Thomasville Furniture exemplifies the passion that helped start Clairemont Communications — developing strategies that use both traditional and emerging forms of communications. One campaign for the company and its sister company Drexel Heritage combined local media and trade magazines with blog posts and Facebook content to boost brand recognition among consumers.

At Clairemont, we stay on top of new social media tools and their potential to help our clients. In 2015 we built and managed a customer application using the social engagement platform Shoutlet to host a special giveaway promotion for Thomasville. The company asked us to help it build brand awareness during its annual Memorial Day Sale; the resulting giveaway campaign increased its Facebook fan count by nearly 11,000 likes, created at least one million total daily impressions, and captured more than 100,000 new consumer leads.

A key to using social media effectively is understanding that it is not a broadcast medium; success comes from creating interaction and active engagement. We had confidence in our Memorial Day campaign because our previous experience managing Thomasville’s Facebook page had shown giveaways to be effective traffic-driving tools. In 2011 we promoted special giveaways throughout the year to build and sustain fan engagement. We also designed our interior design posts to get fans talking about their own design ideas. As a result, weekly interactions increased 155 percent, and the total Facebook fan base increased almost 178 percent from the previous year.

Since our work with Thomasville in Clairemont’s early history, we have had the pleasure to work with several other clients to develop social media strategies and support the day-to-day management of social media tactics. It’s certainly no contest that 2016 hit the history annuls as a momentous year, witnessing the launch of everything from Snapchat Spectacles to a new presidency. Every step of the way, America wasn’t just watching; we were creating libraries of social media to voice opinions, rally troops, champion movements … and occasionally tout our newest homemade Reese’s Brownie recipe. (Thank you for that.)

In a way, we almost rediscovered the vibrancy (and hopeful efficacy) of our social media voice. So what do 2017 trends entail for online expression?

1. Roll camera!

Videos, and lots of them. The Fantastic Four (Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter) have all boosted their video-friendly components with features like Instagram stories and Facebook Livestream. Video content on Twitter alone has increased by 50 percent since the beginning of 2016, spiking when Twitter launched full-screen viewing and increased video length to 140 seconds. And Facebook put a premium on Livestream videos for Newsfeed ranking. As research is showing, visual content is one of the few types that has the potential to cut through the noise of pay-to-play social media advertising. From slideshow ads and crowd-sourced campaigns to Livestream previews and DIY videos, campaign content should leverage video content. Need we even reference our beloved Raleigh friends, Kim and Pen, whose Holderness Family videos garner upwards of 100,000 views?

2. Tell the tale.

Create narratives that tell the whole story. We’ve been burned by the flux of last year’s “fake news,” which augmented our desire to see the people behind the brand. Once again social media platforms are paving the way.Facebook is reportedly testing “Messenger Day,” and Twitter opened “Moments” to all users — a feature recently retooled in its “Explore” tab. While there’s a distinct place for professional videography, we’re craving to see the thought process behind the product.

A quick note: Keep your content “snackable.” Quick, how-to videos, collages and brief visual soundbites best appeal to our waning eight-second attention span (which, by the way, has now been surpassed by that of a goldfish.)

3. Be messy.

Andrea Weigl, the assistant features editor of The News & Observer, proved a solid point in her recent article, “What really happens at a food photo shoot.” She notes that the most popular images on the N&O’s Instagram accounts are not the gorgeous, mouth-watering spreads crafted by James Beard-winning chefs. No, they’re the messy ones, the ones that expose the chaos, clutter and realness of the production. Social media has already provided tools for you to welcome friends, fans and followers behind the curtain (with a flower wreath filter, if you really want). Embrace transparency as you share your story.

Why Are We Afraid to Lean In?

While I recognize that I might be a little late to the game, I choose to read Lean In by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg for my Clairemont book review selection. It’s a book I’ve wanted to read since it first was published in 2013, but seeing as I have two young children, here we are three years later.

Since the book has been out for some time, I was familiar with a few of the criticisms prior to reading Lean In, such as, “It’s easy to lean in and do it all when you have a lot of money.” But since the percentage of women in C-suite leadership positions is disproportionately low, I was interested to hear from Sandberg about her experience climbing the corporate ladder, especially in the male-dominated tech industry.

What I discovered is that,while she has held some very powerful positions throughout her career, Sandberg was also trying to juggle being a good mom, wife, friend and employee just like the rest of us. I thought Sandberg shared some insightful observations in this book. Here are a few that really resonated with me:

Don’t be afraid to speak up and take risks.

“We hold ourselves back in ways both big and small, by lacking self-confidence, by not raising our hands, and by pulling back when we should be leaning in,” Sandberg writes in the book.

That was one of the most powerful lines in the book for me and something I have seen time and time again throughout my career. By nature, women are people pleasers. We don’t like to brag or call attention to our accomplishments. I know it’s a generalization, but men don’t seem to have the same problem accepting compliments for their successes.

And when offered a new role or the opportunity to take on a new project, women often hesitate – worried that we don’t have the right skill set – and suggest that someone else would be a better fit for the job.

The key takeaway here for me was that we should not be afraid to throw our name in the ring more often and be comfortable just saying thank you when approached with a “job well-done.”

Visualize your career as a jungle gym, not a ladder.

Being a working mom who has taken steps backwards and sideways in my career to balance work and family, this analogy really hit home with me. It made me realize there are many different ways to get to the top, and they are not all in a straight line.

“Ladders are limiting,” Sandberg writes. “Jungle gyms offer more creative exploration. There are many ways to get to the top of a jungle gym. The ability to forge a unique path with occasional dips, detours and even dead ends presents a better chance for fulfillment.”

You really can’t do it all…and that’s ok!

Gone are the days of trying to do it all…at least all at the same time. The reality is that when woman try to juggle career, children and relationships, inevitably one of those things suffers. We can do it all, but maybe just not all at the same time. And that’s ok! What we do need is a really good partner or support team to make it all work. Sandberg urges women to make their partners real partners instead of trying to do it all themselves. And if you are a single mom, surround yourself with a strong network to help.

The sad twist to her story is that in the book she talked so much about the importance of having a strong partner, and how her husband Dave Goldberg played a huge role in her career success. As you are probably aware, her husband died suddenly on a family vacation in May 2015. In May of 2016, she delivered the UC Berkley commencement address. During this address, she shared some very personal and very good advice with the new graduates.

“It is the greatest irony of my life that losing my husband helped me find deeper gratitude— gratitude for the kindness of my friends, the love of my family, the laughter of my children. My hope for you is that you can find that gratitude—not just on the good days, like today, but on the hard ones, when you will really need it.”

Fashion and lifestyle bloggers are a big deal in our industry. Since hitting the scene about a decade ago, they have become the voice of social media and influence their followers’ opinions. At Clairemont, we love tapping into the trendiest blogger circles in town and inviting them to check out our clients through fun and engaging events.

One of the bloggers that our Clairemont team admires is Essense Heel, of EssenseHeel.com. I interviewed her to find out how she keeps her likes and engagement on Instagram high and her Snapchat stories viewed.

Essense is a fashion and style influencer from Raleigh, N.C. She received her training as a wardrobe stylist from celebrity stylist Shun Melson by successfully completing Fashun 101 in 2014. In addition to styling, Essense is a closet coach, blogger, socialite and brand ambassador. Essense is on “the list” and receives the most exclusive invites to all the fashion social events in N.C., which lead her to be co-founder of The Where to be Society.

What is your brand’s overall purpose?

The overall purpose of my brand is to share my style expertise with personal styling tips and look book ideas for the different seasons. The fashion world is of course a greatly opinionated and diverse industry where self-expression is rife and there are tons of fashion rule books to swear by. However you get to tell the story of who you ARE through your own sense of fashion and style. No one can tell your story like you. I encourage my clients to be bold, be beautiful and be themselves.

Which social channels do you use?

My main social channels are Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. I recently started using Snapchat to give my followers an inside look at my daily routine as a stylist and VIP events that I attend around North Carolina.

What is your brand’s voice? 

The essence of Essense. My fashion posts are to inspire women to dress how they want to be addressed. I want women to believe that fashions fade, but style is eternal.

What is the tone of your social media updates?

I like to remain personal and humble. I want my followers to know that I believe in what I do, and to always keep in mind that looking good is not about the size on the tag, but more about dressing yourself in a way that makes you feel confident and shows off your best features.

We’ve all heard it – chatter that Facebook is slowly dying and is doomed to become the next MySpace. But before you go and break up with Facebook, consider this. Yes, more and more users, specifically young teenagers, are trading in their Facebook accounts for newer social media platforms, such as Instagram and WhatsApp. But let’s not forget who owns these apps—Facebook.

Social Media and the Changing Environment

And why did Facebook decide to buy these apps? With its steady user base and enormous funds, Facebook is changing and adapting to the new social media environment where it is not the only social network anymore. In more recent years, an average social media user navigates between multiple platforms, including Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.

Facebook Is Still Distinctive

But what makes Facebook different from these newer platforms? Channels like Snapchat allow users to post pictures that will disappear and be forgotten after a few seconds or hours. On the other hand, Facebook aims to allow users to post photos designed to be remembered, such as weddings, graduations and family reunions. Each platform’s goals and functionalities differ, helping to further distinguish them.

The Cool Factor

Teenagers might say that Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram are the “in” platforms and Facebook just isn’t cool anymore. But according to Business Insider’s article in 2013 when Facebook seemed to be diminishing, Mark Zuckerberg said, “People assume that we’re trying to be cool. It’s never been my goal. I’m the least cool person there is! We’re almost 10 years old so we’re definitely not a niche thing any more so that kind of angle for coolness is done for us.”

Instead of trying to be the trendy site that relies on the cool factor to attract users, Facebook is trying to build a lasting product to compete in the same market with platforms such as Google.

Recent data shows that Facebook continues to squash the competition in social media traffic referrals. This may be because businesses and companies still rely heavily on Facebook for marketing strategies and endorsement activities.

So even though there are new channels, tools and platforms popping up daily, Facebook isn’t dying anytime soon.
