Copy Cat: Octopus Bowl

Copy Cat: Octopus Bowl

March 14, 2016January 31, 2023 Jasmin SessomsBlog, Copy CatAgency, bowl, copy cat, Creative copy, octopus, Raleigh PR Agency, ZGalllerie

I love the work that we do for our clients. Have I mentioned that before on the blog?

A few days ago, while prepping for the Charleston Wine and Food Festival for our client Il Palio, I found myself thinking a lot about octopus – and no, on this occasion it wasn’t Chef Teddy’s grilled octopus. I was trying to figure out the best way to create an octopus-themed table at the festival to showcase Chef Teddy’s amazing grilling skills for such an interesting dish. I ran across this octopus bowl on Zgallerie and could not resist it, but the inventive copy was the very best part of the page – maybe even the best part of my day.

“Entertain in high style with our sea life inspired Octopus bowl. Fill with your favorite bottled beverages making the perfect statement for a festive fete. For decorative distinction, the piece has been finished in a silver hue, showcasing the multi-dimensional characteristics of the grandiose eight-legged marine animal. For ease of use, the bowl dispenser has been designed to be easily removed from its octopus base for refilling or cleaning. Crafted out of aluminum.”

Initially, I was merely doing research for Il Palio, but I gradually discovered my new love for this octopus vessel. I wanted one for my house because of the words that were listed on the website. I wanted to entertain in high style with my octopus bowl filled with San Pellegrino to make a perfect statement at my next festive fete. Wait, I’m not planning a “festive fete” anytime soon.

The most amazing part of this entire search is that prior to reading the copy I didn’t have the personal desire to purchase an octopus bowl. I don’t need an octopus bowl. I wanted it because of the way that it was written by Zgallerie! I bet this post has you planning your next party with this grandiose eight-legged marine animal!

Taunting tentacles turned into a tasty treat? We caught the action at last week’s 11th Annual Charleston Wine & Food Festival with Il Palio (client).

Executive Chef Teddy Diggs turned up the heat over a wood-fired cowboy cauldron at the Culinary Village. In a matter of minutes, these freshly caught octopi transformed from raw clumps to tender creations infused with a smoky flavor and topped with chili peppers. Fiery flavors on all sides!

Smoke + sea monster = succulent.

Sound like fun? Check out our tips for executing a successful food festival!

On the Record: Building Your Brand

On the Record: Building Your Brand

March 9, 2016January 31, 2023 Sarah HattmanBlog, On the Record, Raleigh PR Agencybrand building, branding, High Five Conference, Myrtle's Postcards, postcards, PR, Public Relations, Raleigh NC, story, Storytelling, Triangle AMA1 Comment on On the Record: Building Your Brand

When’s the last time you sent someone a postcard? In this age of texts and emails, I am a huge fan of the hand-written letter and cannot help but smile when I open my mailbox to find one waiting for me.

When I started at Clairemont two years ago, I noticed a series of framed postcards on the mantle by my desk. Occasionally, it was mentioned that they were Myrtle’s postcards, but I never heard the full story until recently, and it’s fascinating. However, it’s not my story to tell, so if you want to hear the whole story – and didn’t get to hear it at the recent High Five Conference – contact Clairemont CEO Dana Hughens.

What I will tell you is that it’s a story about 80 postcards that were written over a span of 50 years and sent from all over the world to a woman named Myrtle. Myrtle’s postcards are more than just a great story, they also can teach us about building our brand through storytelling. Let’s go “On the Record” with Dana to find out more.

Oh Momma Monday: McGavock Edwards

Oh Momma Monday: McGavock Edwards

March 7, 2016January 31, 2023 Tracy LathanBlog, Oh Momma Monday, Public Relationsmotherhood, Public Relations, work-life balance

McGavock Edwards, strategic communications director at Eckel & Vaughan, is a seasoned PR practitioner with years of experience juggling work, family and travel schedules. I had the pleasure of working with her for more than a decade and was able to see firsthand how well she balanced a demanding career and family time. I recently caught up with McGavock and she shared  a few of her secrets to success, as well as some of her favorite Raleigh hotspots.

What is your occupation?

Strategic communications director at Eckel & Vaughan, a strategic communications agency located in Raleigh, NC.

What about the field of PR excites you the most?

It’s funny, really. I’m a gal who loves structure, routine and order. But, my favorite thing about PR? A day is never the same. Whether it’s learning about a new challenge begging for effective communication principles, studying the ever-changing communication landscape, or the questions that arise when a field changes so often, the ebb and flow of PR thrills me. Everyday. All day.

How has your career/professional life changed since becoming a mom?

When I first became a working mom, it was tough. I yearned for that perfect work-life balance. I always felt like I was cheating someone. Work suffered if I was focused on my child. And, I felt guilty being at work instead of at home. But, now that I have a few years under my belt, wisdom (and peace) have settled in. There is no such thing as work-life balance—at least not with a 50-50- split. Life is messy. Being a working mom is messy. It’s a struggle, but it’s also wonderful to be able to feel fulfilled in all aspects of my life. The key for me? Be as present and focused on the person or task in front of me for as long as it takes, and let any guilt roll off my back. Everyone and everything gets the best from me. Well, for the most part.McGavock 3

Any tips for juggling work and motherhood?

Don’t let guilt consume you; it’s a waste of energy. Find an employer who appreciates the value you bring, not only the hours you put in. Keep to-do lists and check them often. And, keep your calendar up-to-date and with you at all times.

Most important thing motherhood has taught you…

Focus on the moment you’re in. Once you have a child, life does truly fly by.

What do you enjoy doing when you have down time?

I’ve always liked to read, but lately I’m lucky to get through one Vanity Fair article, much less a whole book. Recently, I’ve indulged in the adult coloring fad. I know – so “basic” of me. But, I’ve found that after day of words, colors soothe my soul.

What are your favorite Raleigh hotspots?Mcgavock 2

For Your Convenience is a fave to stop by during lunch when I need a gift or a treat for myself. I love Salt + Lime for dinner with the girls. Uniquities in North Hills is my go-to for a cute new top. Millbrook Tennis Center is where I take my aggression out (on a little yellow ball).

What are three of your “faves” right now?

1) The Blackberry Smash from Salt + Lime in North Raleigh is delish. It’s not on the menu anymore, so it requires the right bartender and some sweet talk.

2) My favorite TV show is Scandal. It’s dramatic, current and smart.

3) Postmates and Amazon Prime save so much time!

What is the plural of Octopus? Octopi? Octopuses? Who knew Octopi would be such a big deal at Clairemont? Our client, Il Palio is attending the Charleston Wine and Food Festival and is planning to feature their specialty dish, grilled octopi. So what’s better than a grilled Octopus on a warm day in Charleston? Spotting an Octocow on the way to afternoon meeting in Durham! Yes, believe it or not we spotted this in the parking lot while making our way to a meeting!
