On the Record: Building Your Brand

On the Record: Building Your Brand

March 9, 2016July 15, 2022 Sarah HattmanBlog, On the Record, Raleigh PR Agencybrand building, branding, High Five Conference, Myrtle's Postcards, postcards, PR, Public Relations, Raleigh NC, story, Storytelling, Triangle AMA1 Comment on On the Record: Building Your Brand

When’s the last time you sent someone a postcard? In this age of texts and emails, I am a huge fan of the hand-written letter and cannot help but smile when I open my mailbox to find one waiting for me.

When I started at Clairemont two years ago, I noticed a series of framed postcards on the mantle by my desk. Occasionally, it was mentioned that they were Myrtle’s postcards, but I never heard the full story until recently, and it’s fascinating. However, it’s not my story to tell, so if you want to hear the whole story – and didn’t get to hear it at the recent High Five Conference – contact Clairemont CEO Dana Hughens.

What I will tell you is that it’s a story about 80 postcards that were written over a span of 50 years and sent from all over the world to a woman named Myrtle. Myrtle’s postcards are more than just a great story, they also can teach us about building our brand through storytelling. Let’s go “On the Record” with Dana to find out more.

Myrtle Monday — Power of Positive Thinking

February 7, 2011July 15, 2022 Dana PhelpsBlog, Free Advice, InspirationalClairemont Communications, Communications, positive thinking, postcards, PR1 Comment on Myrtle Monday — Power of Positive Thinking

I’m a believer in staying positive. It makes my days more enjoyable, and I like to think that a sunshiny attitude helps my team members and clients through their (sometimes stressful) days. Now you might be envisioning cartwheels and over-the-top enthusiasm.

While there are times that certainly call for that, I’m talking more about the every day ways to maintaining a positive outlook. Maybe it is simply a matter of tweaking how you respond to “how are you?” or how you greet participants on a conference call.

Read what Ruth wrote to Myrtle on this postcard. “Even in the rain, Venice is such a romantic city.” Imagine for a moment if she would have started with “It has rained the entire time we’ve been here,” or “If it would just stop raining…”

Creates a completely different tone, doesn’t it? Think you might need some help in positive-proofing your communications? Here are some books that might help: The Energy Bus, The No Complaining Rule and Everyday Positive Thinking.

I love what Lela wrote. “We have seen many wonderful old buildings and Cathedrals but the girls are modern with make up and mini-skirts.” What a hoot!

Myrtle Monday: Simplify in the New Year

January 3, 2011July 15, 2022 Dana PhelpsBlog, InspirationalCommunications, postcards, simplify, Social MediaLeave a Comment on Myrtle Monday: Simplify in the New Year

Happy New Year! If you visited our blog last year, you might have noticed that while we love social media and “newer” forms of communications, we have a strong appreciation for traditional communications, as well. We especially love when we can build a client campaign that blends social and traditional communications.

We began blogging about Myrtle’s postcards because we love this old-fashioned form of correspondence, and we like to draw the comparison to Twitter. Since postcards don’t allow for much space, we like to call them the original Twitter.

For today’s Myrtle Monday and the first of the New Year, we share a postcard that comes from Upper Canada Village. We chose this one because it features a place that is all about a more simple time, and we think a new year is the best time to think about how to simplify your life. Is it a better organizational system for your files in the office? Clearing your closet of clothes you never wear? Maybe it’s a shift in your business to specialize or focus more time on fewer clients. Whatever it is, we hope the end result looks something like this photo… what could be better than fresh eggs, a table of vegetables and someone to put blooming flowers in your vases? Happy New Year, everyone!
