Copy Matters: YETI’s “Rare Air”

Copy Matters: YETI’s “Rare Air”

April 6, 2018January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Copy Cat, Marketingcopy writing, creative ideas, Marketing, Raleigh PR Agency, Yeti

I’ll have to rope a nameless good friend into this post. Friend X has a small penchant for YETI products. And by “small” I mean “monopolizing the kitchen cabinet at an impressive pace.” Truth be told, I’m begrudgingly jealous of his pristine collection of excursion-ready coolers, cups, bags and buckets — in three rugged colors.

His most recent order included the stainless-steel Rambler Colster koozie (in Brick Red). But for once, it wasn’t the YETI product that captured my attention.

It was the little something extra in the YETI.

Instead of simply shipping the koozie, YETI maximized every square inch of its package to showcase its brand personality. The Colster contained what appeared at first behest to be an empty aluminum can. But upon perusing the label, the pop top can offered a treasure.

Behold, friends. A can of Rare Air.

The label touts the contents so convincingly that I almost popped the top. Quippy copy grabs the eye by underscoring the content’s premium nature (“Rare”) and purity (“100 % Wild”, because I prefer my air captured fresh from the forest, thank-you-very-much). And considering it’s undiluted, the can reminds us to “Please Breathe Responsibly”.

And trust you’re about to enjoy some of the finest vapors on the market.

Wanna confirm the serving size and nutrition facts? Just check the side.

And don’t worry. The Powers That Be have your back with the requisite Government Warning. PS: It’s about bees.

Government Warning: This can may contain traces of moose breath, porcupine dander, poison ivy, or a swarm of angry bees. There’s an off chance the bees are friendly. Either way, this can probably contains bees.”

Lessons?

Empty space isn’t dead.

Approach your business promotions with a keen eye, seeking unused spaces to tout your brand.

Don’t reinvent the wheel. Rebrand it.

YETI didn’t develop an entirely new widget to shove into the Colster. Instead, it followed logic, leveraging the Colster’s natural use. From here, they maximized clever copy, witty words and catchy concepts to pack a punch.

Words matter.

The idea might have been cute at best with heavy-handed language. (Insert cliches, cue eye rolls.) What finished this package was not what was said but how. The similarities between Rare Air and other beverages’ claims were so striking that who knows; it might very well jumpstart an air-drinking fad!

You have “empty space”? We have ideas. Shoot us a line to see how we can help!

What Does a PR Agency Do? A Top-Selling Real Estate Community

What Does a PR Agency Do? A Top-Selling Real Estate Community

March 13, 2018January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternAwards, Blog, Case Studiesaward winning PR, Briar Chapel, Creative PR, Creative Tactics, event PR, Pepper Festival, Raleigh PR, Raleigh PR Agency, real estate PR

Briar Chapel is one of largest master-planned green communities in North Carolina and part of Newland Communities, the country’s most prominent privately held residential real estate developer. As it approached its eighth year in business, the marketing team turned to Clairemont, its agency of record, to continue to position Briar Chapel as one of the Triangle’s most desirable living destinations.

Strategy

Clairemont crafted a strategy to reenergize Briar Chapel’s organizational identity through media relations, creative on-site events and community partnerships. Since research showed that target buyers valued self-expression and innovation along with a sense of community, our methods provided opportunities for prospects to interact and personally experience the relational atmosphere at Briar Chapel while highlighting its cutting-edge, customizable lifestyle offerings.

Execution

The Pepper Festival: Hosted on-site at Briar Chapel, the annual Pepper Festival celebrates local culture and food, featuring the largest chef competition in the state. As the team planned for the 9th Pepper Festival, Clairemont spiced up the event to increase attendance and gain stronger visibility for Briar Chapel. To connect with families, we launched the inaugural Spicy Kid Chef Competition, pairing top chefs with aspiring “Pint-Sized Chefs” and challenging the peppery pairs to craft their most creative pepper-themed dish. We tapped into the creative class by hosting a “Hot Glam Fashion Show” where designers showcased pepper-themed couture.

To boost online visibility and social sharing, Clairemont created an interactive personality quiz peppered with twists of wit; seven short questions posed unexpected queries and prescribed a pepper-themed personality type (like “Mild Child,” “Sweet Heat” or “Flame Thrower”), encouraging users to share their results and enter to win festival tickets. Creative and individualized pitches piqued the interest of target influencers. These efforts attracted a record 2,500 festivalgoers on-site to Briar Chapel and secured record coverage, including features in regional magazines and on TV segments.

Launching Veranda: As Briar Chapel prepared to unveil Veranda, its first commercial segment, Clairemont added zest to the strategy to snag the interest of media and guests. For example, we bypassed standard shovels at the ground-breaking ceremony and opted instead to put our officials at the helm of Bobcat excavators.

The ground-breaking ceremony secured visits from the Triangle’s top reporters through creative pitches and placed stories in almost all of the area’s major outlets. To foster community engagement before grand opening, Briar Chapel hosted “Meet the Neighbors,” inviting residents to enjoy complementary food, beverages, live music and services from their new Veranda neighbors at a block-style party. Veranda opened its doors as an attractor for homebuyers and destination for Chapel Hill visitors.

Partnerships and Community Events: To attract prospective homebuyers, Clairemont ditched blasé home tours and helped launch a series of creative on-site events. The team reinstated Music in the Meadow, an outdoor summer concert series featuring local bands, food trucks and family activities in Briar Chapel’s renowned parks. Briar Chapel also hosted a Triangle Off-Road Cyclists (TORC) race to attract the public on-site while showcasing its extensive trail system. Standard open-house weekends were transformed into interactive celebrations that offered guests guides to explore amenities and gift certificates to enjoy the shops and restaurants at Veranda, Briar Chapel’s new commercial segment.

Online Presence: Clairemont retooled Briar Chapel’s website content to reflect its innovative homes and the sense of community that target demographics prized. To boost reader interest, we transformed data into useful, creative content, such as a DIY home blog series, sneak peek tours of developments and resident spotlights on programs such as “Pooches on the Porch.”

Creative Media Pitches: Clairemont brainstormed creative angles beyond home construction to pique the interest of reporters throughout the year. Our pitches explored everything from Briar Chapel’s commitment to green building and its new age-qualified section to its active, vibrant vibe.

Results

In direct correlation with our stated objectives above, we met every goal, exceeded expectations and produced the following results:

  1. Clairemont secured a total of 36 news stories and blogs.
  2. Special events drew an additional 4,000 people on-site.
  3. Home sales increased by 49 percent in 2016.

As a result of this campaign, Clairemont successfully positioned Briar Chapel as one of the top places to live in the Triangle, which helped Briar Chapel meet its annual sales goal and earn the title of Best Neighborhood by Chapel Hill Magazine.

The work Clairemont Communications conducted in partnership with Briar Chapel earned a Gold Award in Organizational Identity/Promotion the Raleigh Public Relations Society. We are proud that this campaign represents two of the 175 awards we’ve received since starting Clairemont in 2010.

We’re not shy. As a team that transforms PR campaigns from “blah to voila,” we love things with pizzazz.

… including cooky, crazy costumes.

For Clairemont’s 8th anniversary extravaganza, we invited our friends from the Lil Photo Bus to capture the hoopla in their photo booth (which, incidentally, is housed in a vintage VW bus). From boas and top hats to flashy flamingo frames, partygoers had their pick of props from a decked-out costume closet.

The best part? We have these festooned festivities on file.

Check out the snapshots from our 8th anniversary, and tell us: who wore it best?

Dana Phelps Hughens Named Chair of PRSA’s Counselors Academy

Fanelli, Finley and McCormick named as new members on 2018 executive committee

NEW YORK  — The members of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Counselors Academy have elected Dana Phelps Hughens, CEO of Clairemont Communications in Raleigh, N.C., as its 2018 chair. In addition, Filomena Fanelli of Impact PR & Communications and Kate Finley of Belle Communications have joined the Counselors Academy executive committee for three-year terms, and Gary McCormick of GMc Communications as an ex-officio member for a one-year term.

Counselors Academy is the national professional interest section of PRSA that focuses on the business of agency PR. Its entrepreneurial members are owners or senior managers of leading independent firms in the U.S. and Canada. Counselors Academy’s programs foster networking, mentoring and learning, and the executive committee consists of 15 senior-level public relations professionals from across the country.

As CEO of Clairemont Communications, Hughens leads the agency to devise public relations and marketing strategies that have been recognized with 175 industry awards since opening in 2010. She is a Silver Anvil award winner and has been honored by the Triangle Business Journal with Women in Business and Forty Under Forty awards. Previously, Hughens was Senior Vice President and Global Consumer Practice Group Co-Chair of Fleishman-Hillard.

“As the owner of an independent agency, one of my first decisions was to join PRSA Counselors Academy,” said Hughens. “It is an essential resource in building and managing a business and has allowed me to build close relationships with other public relations professionals who I know I can trust.”

Hughens added, “As a long-term member of Counselors Academy, I’m really passionate about being this year’s chair. We’re focused on growing and engaging our membership while we continue to make our annual conference the premier professional development event for public relations agency owners and senior leaders.”

The section’s marquee event is the PRSA Counselors Academy 2018 Spring Conference, which will be held May 6-8, 2018, in Toronto. Known for its robust networking and learning opportunities, the Spring Conference enables collaborative peer relationships in which meaningful business counsel, operational best practices and industry trends are shared and gained.
