Our very own Dana Hughens is the PRSA’s Counselors Academy Conference Chair for the 2013 conference June 9-11 in Austin, Texas. As conference chair, she has the privilege to work with other members of the conference planning committee, which consists of senior-level PR counselors and agency owners from across the United States and Canada. We caught up with these PR pros to find out their secret to success and what they love most about Counselors Academy.

Meet the first guest of this blog series – Abbie Fink, Vice President of HMA Public Relations in Phoenix, Ariz. Abbie was recently selected by the Phoenix Business Journal as one of the Top 25 Most Dynamic Women in Business and held the position of co-chair for the 2011 Counselors Academy Spring Conference.

Have You Heard the Buzz About the Fuzz?

November 14, 2012January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Entry-Level PR Job, Marketing, Social Media + Influencer EngagementBuzz about The Fuzz, Clairemont Communications, Facebook, interns, New Media Campaigns, Pinterest, PR Agency, Public Relations, Public Relations Projects, Raleigh PR Agency, Raleigh Public Relations Agency, Social Media, Twitter, UNC Journalism School, YouTube1 Comment on Have You Heard the Buzz About the Fuzz?

Social media has forever changed the way brands interact and communicate with consumers. Today, Clairemont intern Callie Henson tells us how she has embraced the power of new media in her PR courses, internships and class project –  The Fuzz.

I’ve always been the kind of person who loves social media. At first, it was more for my personal use – but now, I am fascinated with the power and influence new media can bring to a brand.

Over the past few years, I have been able to get a strong grasp on how to be a successful PR professional through my different internships and classes specializing in public relations. For the past month, I have lead a campus-wide new media campaign at UNC called The Fuzz. And with this project, everything I have learned through my college career has come together – my PR skills and social media skills have worked together  to help create one strong creative branding campaign.

In the New Media Technology and It’s Impact on the Future of Advertising, Marketing & PR class I am taking at UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, I have learned all about new media, it’s impact on audiences and the prevalence new media will have in this industry in the future. Gary Kayye, my professor and founder of rAVe Publications, has challenged us to create a new media campaign on campus to truly show what new media can do for a marketing campaign.

The Fuzz is my team’s campaign – and from Facebook and Twitter to YouTube and Pinterest, my team has created a strong brand and personality on campus in the past three weeks. Everyone knows, or wants to know, all about The Fuzz. Our campaign uses creative marketing to the max – we have figured out how to put on an entire campaign without spending any money. We have reached out to local businesses, and by supporting them and their social media, the businesses have provided us with donations and prizes.

UNC student Julia Shearer shows off her winnings from The Fuzz local business partner, Caribou Coffee

“Five years ago, the idea that students would able to take mostly free new media technologies to organically create a marketing project of this scope and with this level of community involvement would have been unimaginable,” Kayye said.

This marketing campaign has opened my eyes to all the possibilities of new media technologies and what it can do for any business. Social media has brought the power of voice back to the brand. No longer do you need to rely on a reporter to get your news and your story out there.

We got our story out there on our own through different social media channels and self-publishing news websites. For example, I was even approached by Susanna Gebauer, the founder of the exploreb2b.com social platform, to write a story about The Fuzz for the global communications news source based in Berlin. And, from my time at Clairemont, I’ve learned about different self-publishing news websites like The Third Report, All Voices and Pitch Engine. We even have a Huffington Post story in the works…

The Fuzz has allowed me to put my PR skills and lessons-learned to the test. And, so far, I think I’ve passed. As for today, our YouTube page has nearly 2,000 views total. Our followers on Twitter and likes on Facebook grow everyday. And most importantly, the Fuzz is truly buzzing around campus. Everyone wants to know the buzz about The Fuzz. Have you heard the buzz about The Fuzz?

Clairemont CEO Honored with TBJ 2012 Women in Business Award

September 6, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerAwards, Blog, The Clairemont TeamCEO, Dana Hughens, PR Agency, TBJ, Triangle Business Journal, winner, Women in Business Award2 Comments on Clairemont CEO Honored with TBJ 2012 Women in Business Award

Did you hear the news? Clairemont’s very own CEO Dana Hughens has been named a recipient of a 2012 Women in Business Award from the Triangle Business Journal, and we’re very proud! A few of the many reasons the TBJ chose Dana for the honor:

  • Dana successfully started a business (Clairemont, of course!) during an economic downturn.
  • She has grown Clairemont to create additional full-time and part-time jobs as well as solidify a strong internship program.
  • She was invited to join the executive committee of Counselors Academy, a special section of Public Relations Society of America, where she has been named the organization’s 2013 conference chair.
  • She is going into her third year of assisting Triangle Family Services, a local nonprofit, with marketing and raising awareness of its Annual Gingerbread Benefit.

To close, we’d like to end with this quote from Dana, which was featured in a recent article honoring all 2012 Women in Business Award winners:

“I see leadership as more of a marathon than a sprint. So I hope that my best example of leadership is a consistent display of my passion for public relations…”

Congrats again, Dana!

My First 30 Days at a Raleigh PR Agency: Days 29 and 30

July 11, 2012January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Entry-Level PR Job, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agencyentry-level PR job, entry-level PR position, PR, PR Agency, Raleigh PR Agency, Raleigh Public Relations Agency

So, this is the last blog for my 30-day series about life at a Raleigh PR Agency. Here is my final reflection, and the lessons that I’ve learned:

  • It’s not where you work – it’s who you work with that matters.
  • Read the news and stay up to date with what’s happening in the industry. It’s our job to know what the latest is and how it can help them in their respective industries.
  • Awards season: oh so stressful, but rewarding when your agency is recognized for all of its work.
  • Make sure to check your past award entries’ scoring sheets to see how you can improve.
  • When researching and compiling a lot of data, try not to get overwhelmed by the amount of information. Focus on what you really need to show, and everything will fall into place.
  • Great work is based on great writing.
  • Don’t forget to ask questions. It’s easier to clarify an assignment before you start it, then to do it wrong and need to start over completely.

The list could go on and on, but I’ll try and keep it concise. I’ve learned a lot in these past 30 days, and it hasn’t always been easy. There have been challenges, frustrations and mistakes. But, in the end, I always learned something and hopefully got better at my job. Thanks for reading, commenting and lending advice and support as I detailed my life and lessons as a brand new account coordinator. This blog series has reached its conclusion, but I’ll be back with more stories, thoughts, ramblings and insights about what it’s like to work at a Raleigh PR agency. Stay tuned!
