Food Memes: Do or Don’t?

Food Memes: Do or Don’t?

February 3, 2016January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PR, Social Media + Influencer Engagementhospitality social media, raleigh social media, restaurant social media, social media memes, when to use memes

They’re hot; they’re not. They’re trending; they’re tanking. Social media memes mark one of pop culture’s most fickle phenomenons — right next to middle school cliques.

But memes — whether reposted or original — have proven to be surprisingly effective at boosting social media engagement. Why? One quantitative study suggests that memes not only provide the user with an active role in content creation but also invite him or her to enter into an inner social circle, sharing common emotions and jokes with counterparts worldwide. Hashtags, cartoon renderings, verbiage superimposed over celebrity photos — you name it. Memes somehow offer both individual expression and group acceptance in one fell swoop.

While this psycho-meme-analysis proves interesting, food and hospitality industries need a tactical plan to evaluate and appropriately implement popular content — including memes — into their social media strategies.

1. Is it the right time?

The lifespan for a meme is short, and like most trends, the time to jump on the meme Be Like Bill Candy Crush Memebandwagon is on the front end of the bell curve. Watch content from your followers, and keep your eye on these five web tools to catch wind of what’s next. Be aware that many meme trends garner backlash, like the recent response to the wildly popular “Be Like Bill” trend that even The Washington Post and New York Magazine are snubbing.

2. Does it fit your restaurant or hotel’s personality?

Sounds simple, but the question begs pause. Fine dining establishments, for example, may not want to align their brands with Grumpy Cat graphics that might come across as flippant or rude. Memes rely heavily on humor, which must be thoughtfully crafted and delivered to connect with your audience. Now might be a good time to reference your target demographic and its pyschographic preferences.

3. Can you tie it into real-time developments?

Dunk in the DarkOreo takes the cake—er, cookie—on this one. During Superbowl 2013, the social media team leveraged the game’s power outage instantaneously with its clever ad, “You Can Still Dunk in the Dark”. Two years later we’re still talking about it. While your response doesn’t necessarily need to be that rapid, use the opportunity to tout an upcoming event, special or feature about your hotel or restaurant.

Questions about how graphic messaging fits into your restaurant’s social media strategy? Drop us an email (or a meme)!

Copy Cat: Enrobed in Chocolate

Copy Cat: Enrobed in Chocolate

February 2, 2016January 31, 2023 Jasmin SessomsBlog, Copy Cat, MarketingClairemont Communications, Creative copy, creative PR agency, Marketing, Shortbread Cookies, Trader Joe's, Trader Joe's Cookies

Have you ever spotted the creative copy throughout the aisles at Trader Joe’s? I experienced the Mini Dark Chocolate Mint Stars a couple weeks ago and fell in love. I’m not sure if it was the copy on the box or the flavor of the cookies that took my breath away and left me reaching for another. Before you even open the package, the copy suggests that you are about to eat “A truly stellar cookie.” And Trader Joe’s is not over promising with this copy.

“Rich, crumbly mini star-shaped chocolate shortbread cookies infused with the bright flavor of peppermint, enrobed in luscious dark chocolate and sprinkled with nonpareils. Talk about being star-struck!”

This mint chocolate shortbread cookie has been “enrobed” in dark chocolate and is ready to set your taste buds on fire. Enrobed? Yes, that one single word is enough to make me want to purchase a box or two.

The copy is full of descriptive verbs that make my mouth water and set my soul on fire! The cookie is described as minty, chocolaty with a special star power. Still not enough good copy to make you run to Trader Joe’s? Check out this nugget:

“Give a box as a gift to those friends who really shine. Serve them as dessert to make an ordinary dinner party truly stellar. Or, enjoy them all yourself and keep their star-power your little secret.”

As PR professionals, we are always talking about copy the good, the bad and the ugly. Read more of our copy cat posts here!

Good to Be Alive Virtual Dance Party

Good to Be Alive Virtual Dance Party

Time flies when you’re having fun! This year marks Clairemont’s sixth year in business, but instead of celebrating with a party or cake, we opted for a virtual dance party. As you probably know, the Clairemont team loves to dance, and this time we took the dancing to our clients.

Let’s face it; we wouldn’t be in business without our fabulous clients. As way to thank them for allowing us to push them out of their comfort zones from time to time, we stepped out of our comfort zones — with singing! For me, singing is something I do in the shower or car but never in public. That is until now.

We invite you to keep the virtual dance party going. Hey, feel free to join in as you watch the video!

Oh Momma Monday: Sharon Delaney McCloud

Oh Momma Monday: Sharon Delaney McCloud

January 25, 2016January 31, 2023 Tracy LathanBlog, Oh Momma Monday, Owning a Businessbusiness women in raleigh, Greenroom Communications, Marketing, motherhood, women in business

After 20 years as a television news anchor, Sharon Delaney McCloud now works behind the camera as a managing partner at Greenroom Communications and has never been happier. In today’s Oh Momma Monday Q&A, Sharon shares with us why she made the switch and what motherhood has taught her about work, life and what’s really important.

What is your occupation?

Managing Partner of Greenroom Communications, a Raleigh-based video production and digital marketing agency.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I wanted to see my family. After 20 years as a television news anchor working crazy hours, a couple of us newsies decided to go out on our own. While we certainly don’t work fewer hours, they are OUR hours.

How has your career/professional life changed since becoming a mom?

I feel like becoming a mom opened up a magical place inside me, and nothing else can even remotely compare. I’m forever grateful for these amazing little people that are my children. They bring me endless joy and frustration every day. Making sure I can enjoy being with my kids as much as possible does require tremendous time management skills, and although I fail at it often, I do my best each day to prioritize work schedules with my family’s needs.

Sharon 3

Any tips for juggling work and motherhood?

The work can wait. Honestly, is a client or a project really worth missing a performance or a ballgame that can’t be duplicated? Of course I don’t attend EVERY one of my sons’ practices and/or games, but if there is a way to shift my work schedule so that I am in the stands cheering them on, I do it.

Most important thing motherhood has taught you…

We are here for a greater purpose. My legacy is my family, not my work. While I’m immensely proud of what Greenroom has become, in the end, it’s my family of which I am most proud.

What do you enjoy doing when you have down time?

Downtime – LOL. Family game night on Friday nights at the McCloud house looks like this: jammies, hot chocolate, pizza and the fireplace roaring, if it’s winter. We generally start with Clue or Yatzee and move to Rummikub or Qwirkle. In the summer, we spend lots of time in our cul-de-sac playing Kan Jam or riding bikes on the Greenway.

What are your favorite Raleigh hotspots?

My favorite Raleigh store is Deco. I always find the perfect gift and rarely walk out of there without a cool, new Raleigh t-shirt. For eats and drinks, my go-to spots are The Rockford, Raleigh Beer Garden, Clouds Brewing and The Station.

Sharon 1What are three of your “faves” right now?

My new iWatch. I drank the Apple Kool-Aid years ago and it just keeps going.
Also, live concerts at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre fill my summer calendar. I have a whole routine where my crew meets at my house, we load up my coolers with adult cocktails, beer and food and we head to “The Creek” to tailgate for a minimum of two hours before showtime. The bigger the “hair” band, the bigger the tailgate.
