Instagram Slideshows for Restaurants

Instagram Slideshows for Restaurants

April 3, 2017January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PR, Social Media + Influencer EngagementInstagram, instagram slideshow, Restaurant PR, restaurant social media, Social Media
With the latest Instagram upgrade, users are now able to post “slideshows,” several images within one post where the next photo is accessed by sliding your finger across the screen. This feature gives restaurants a new and fresh way to present themselves on social media’s favorite app. Here are a few examples!

  1. Demo the Deliciousness

Have a fan-favorite dish? Restaurants have the ability to take their followers from start to finish of any meal using the slideshow feature. Since the app allows up to ten slides per post, users have plenty of space to show their followers exactly how their favorite dish is created. Giving them a sneak peek at all the fresh and flavorful ingredients and how they come together piece by piece will help to create some cravings among your followers and future guests!

  1. Recap an Epic Event

Saturday night’s dinner accompanied by a live band? Throwing a special event for the big game? Now you no longer have to pick the “best” photo or video to showcase the whole evening. Followers can relive the entire course of events rather than a snapshot of just one moment.

  1.  Highlight the Specials

Using the slideshow feature, you can advertise the entire night’s specialties (drinks, dinner and desserts!) in one quick and easy post. Note that the Instagram post represents the special for that specific night in order to create a sense of urgency and entice customers to head your way.

  1.  Show Off Good Customer Reviews

With so many consumers now relying on recommendations from others, such as Yelp, slideshows provide a perfect opportunity to highlight those great reviews. Take screen grabs from Yelp or use quotes from customers (even videos!) to create a post that radiates positivity for your restaurant.

  1. Capture the Entire Meal

Show off the three, five or seven course meals your restaurant has to offer! No longer are you limited to one picture or plate of food. Use a photo for each course in the slideshow, and by the end, guests want to know how to make a reservation. Hint: the link is in your profile.

Appeal of a Meal: The Sixth Sense

Appeal of a Meal: The Sixth Sense

July 20, 2016January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Public Relations, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PRfood pr, increase restaurant business, Restaurant PR, restaurant social media, role of PR

Restauranteurs, chefs and culinary authorities have long debated the ultimate appeal of a meal. Especially with the rise of social media, photographers argue that you “eat with your eyes first.” Neuroscientists (or anyone who sat through fourth-grade science) insist that smell dictates flavors, and hence the allure of food is aroma-based. Some market research even suggests that the color of your flatware influences taste.

Beyond the basics of biology, food and hospitality experts add another, and perhaps more holistic, angle to the prism. Emotions.

Gallup research reveals that the primary influencer of repeat restaurant business is the service — how the employees and staff value the customer. Tom Colicchio, one of Bravo’s Top Chef judge, hones this concept further. It’s how customers are greeted immediately as they enter and exit the doors of your restaurant. Hospitality. Service. Ambience. Trust. This concept appears in restaurant vernacular under many banners.

The “X” Factor

So what gains repeat business? What makes a memorable meal? The truth may be closer to “D: All of the above,” a delicate blend of the physical sensations and emotional ambience rolled into some enigmatic “sixth sense.” Every element, from the ingredients and kitchen sounds to the energy and tempo of beverage service, colors the experience, and hence, every staff member plays a key role.

We needn’t remind hospitality professionals to invest in the holistic process of staff development. But as an extension of the team, PR experts also play a vital role in completing the picture when interacting with guests, influencers and staff beyond the restaurant’s four walls.

The Bridge Out

The experience doesn’t halt once the guest exits the front doors. Memories last, opinions gel, questions surface and social media often provides a ready mouthpiece for an ongoing relationship with diners. Here’s where your PR team needs to be integrated into your culture. Our expertise allows us to capture your voice and personality while providing efficient answers, addressing concerns and nurturing a sense of fun and play. Real people connecting with real people.

We also connect with groups that may not come to mind as an official audience, such as influencers, festival attendees, media and even our own social groups. Storytellers, relationship builders, friends, spokespersons — our role amplifies your personality beyond the walls of your dining room.

The Conduit In

Since we have our fingers on the pulse of the restaurant industry, PR partners like Clairemont can provide valuable feedback and strategic council that stays in step with the ebb and flow of culture. Certainly, we can assess overt forms of feedback, such as Yelp and blogger posts, restaurant reviews and Facebook messages. We also stay abreast of current trends and proffer fresh tactics to highlight the restaurant’s distinct offerings.

But what about the subtle tones? The conversation (or lack thereof) on Instagram or the “word on the street” among unofficial culinary thought leaders? Our relationships with these circles provide valuable insight into the prominent vibe and enable us to offer direction to our clients.

Of course, the “in and out” verbiage might suggest that restaurant PR and marketing is akin to a two-way street. Arguably, the process is far more cyclical and fluid, more like the Disney World’s Mad Tea Party ride than unidirectional traffic. But with 24-hour news as the norm, the role of PR is all the more important — a constant extension of the team’s eyes, ears and voice to communicate messages and foster relationships on your behalf.

Want to know what else a PR agency does? Oh, we throw cheese parties and pitch top chefs — all fun and effective and all in a day’s work!

Snapchat for Restaurants

May 25, 2016January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PR, Social Media + Influencer Engagementfood social media, restaurant marketing, Restaurant PR, restaurant social media, snapchat

On May 16, NASA commemorated its 100,000 orbit around the earth with a fresh type of celebration – a Snapchat party. Commander Tim Kopra snapped planet earth from the International Space Station, showcasing everything from culinary tricks to air-born acrobatics.

Oh, and we the earthlings got to witness 16 sunrises in 24 hours. Wowza, Earth! You’re a lucky gal!

Outlets worldwide have covered NASA’s hip move, which sparks conversation for the rest of us still on planet earth. For restaurants and chefs teetering on the brink of Snapchat, nibble on this food for thought:

Why Bother With Snapchat?

Targets the Elusive Younger Audience: For restaurants catering to millennials, Snapchat offers The Promised Land; nearly 77 percent of college students use it daily, and more than half of Snapchat users are under the age of 25 years.

Rekindles One-on-One Engagement: Restaurant professionals fondly remember the hay days when email comprised an effective direct marketing strategy. Poof! Diners received customized event and menu information straight to their (non-spam) inboxes! Amid today’s clutter of messaging, Snapchat offers a new tool for honest-to-goodness one-on-one engagement. Restaurants and chefs can send personal snaps to their followers.

Bypasses the Formality: Instagram, initially intended to share the “instantaneous” moments of life, has transformed to feature a highly filtered showcase of staged photos. Snapchat begins to fill the gap left by other evolving social media channels. Not only is formality not necessary, it’s shunned. Snapchat users expect — nay, demand — raw footage that rekindles the personal, “behind-the-scenes” sense of exclusivity craved by millennials.

How Should You Use Snapchat?

Offer Clever Coupons: Post discounts that followers can screenshot and present for a limited offer. For an extra boost of viral, encourage your followers to share with a friend, and if both customers cash in the coupon, they receive an additional sum-sum!

Demo something new! Rolling out a new menu item? Debuting a fresh recipe? Appeal to your audience’s desire for exclusivity by providing a live preview prior to launch. Score bonus points by showing your staff’s personality. Does the chef indulge in a guilty snack before experimenting with recipes to boost creativity? Honest editorial comments garner attention, as evidenced partly by DJ Khaled’s famous Lost at Sea Snapchat story.

Promote Your Next Event: If you’re launching a special dinner or hosting a partnering chef, whet your followers’ palates with a preview of the menu or dishes. Post a light-hearted interview with staff or guest chefs, or share a late-night prep session for the big event. Bonus points: craft your own on-demand Snapchat geofilters, like IHOP.

Just a few ideas to get you snapping! Looking to boost the rest of your social media as well? Check out our tips on crafting Facebook ads for restaurants.

Food Memes: Do or Don’t?

Food Memes: Do or Don’t?

February 3, 2016January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PR, Social Media + Influencer Engagementhospitality social media, raleigh social media, restaurant social media, social media memes, when to use memes

They’re hot; they’re not. They’re trending; they’re tanking. Social media memes mark one of pop culture’s most fickle phenomenons — right next to middle school cliques.

But memes — whether reposted or original — have proven to be surprisingly effective at boosting social media engagement. Why? One quantitative study suggests that memes not only provide the user with an active role in content creation but also invite him or her to enter into an inner social circle, sharing common emotions and jokes with counterparts worldwide. Hashtags, cartoon renderings, verbiage superimposed over celebrity photos — you name it. Memes somehow offer both individual expression and group acceptance in one fell swoop.

While this psycho-meme-analysis proves interesting, food and hospitality industries need a tactical plan to evaluate and appropriately implement popular content — including memes — into their social media strategies.

1. Is it the right time?

The lifespan for a meme is short, and like most trends, the time to jump on the meme Be Like Bill Candy Crush Memebandwagon is on the front end of the bell curve. Watch content from your followers, and keep your eye on these five web tools to catch wind of what’s next. Be aware that many meme trends garner backlash, like the recent response to the wildly popular “Be Like Bill” trend that even The Washington Post and New York Magazine are snubbing.

2. Does it fit your restaurant or hotel’s personality?

Sounds simple, but the question begs pause. Fine dining establishments, for example, may not want to align their brands with Grumpy Cat graphics that might come across as flippant or rude. Memes rely heavily on humor, which must be thoughtfully crafted and delivered to connect with your audience. Now might be a good time to reference your target demographic and its pyschographic preferences.

3. Can you tie it into real-time developments?

Dunk in the DarkOreo takes the cake—er, cookie—on this one. During Superbowl 2013, the social media team leveraged the game’s power outage instantaneously with its clever ad, “You Can Still Dunk in the Dark”. Two years later we’re still talking about it. While your response doesn’t necessarily need to be that rapid, use the opportunity to tout an upcoming event, special or feature about your hotel or restaurant.

Questions about how graphic messaging fits into your restaurant’s social media strategy? Drop us an email (or a meme)!

Facebook Livestream for Restaurants

Facebook Livestream for Restaurants

Last December, Facebook gave business pages a special Christmas gift: live streaming for certain verified accounts. Still in the pilot phase, this feature allows users to broadcast live video by choosing “Publish” and then clicking “Live Video.” Viewers can then subscribe to receive notifications as well as like and comment on the video. The Livestream feature also allows businesses to track user engagement with the video.

Facebook v. Periscope

“Hm,” you think. “Why not just stick with my trusty Periscope?”

Good question. Unlike Periscope, Facebook live streaming allows businesses to broadcast to a pre-established audience, a fabulous tool for target marketing. In addition, videos on Meerkat and Periscope disappear after a set amount of time. Facebook live streams remain indefinitely on businesses’ pages. Of course, live streaming’s downside is that the video is confined to Facebook, while Periscope can be shared across multiple platforms.

Live Streaming for Restaurants

Still, the app seems to be taking off like a rocket, already boasting 4 million video views daily, according to Fortune.com. And since it’s still on the early side of development, now is the time for restaurants to begin to design strategy to leverage this vibrant tool. Once approved by Facebook as a verified business, here are just a few ways to use Facebook live streaming in your restaurant.

– Restaurant and kitchen tours
– Recipe demos
– Staff parties
– Special events or large banquets
– Real-time testimonials or reviews from diners
– Tours of a local vendor that supplies an ingredient
– An interview with the chef on a new menu item or change

Be sure to track your analytics (likes, follows, comments) and weigh engagement to help determine what types of content appeal to your target audience.

Got other ideas for using Facebook live streaming in your store? Oh, won’t you share with us?
