Calls-to-Action You Can’t Refuse

Calls-to-Action You Can’t Refuse

July 2, 2015January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Copy Cat, Marketingcalls-to-action, Content Marketing, creative marketing, effective pop-ups, great calls to action, marketing strategy, PR content, PR copy, Raleigh PR Agency, writing copy

Calls-to-action (CTAs) are the life breath of advertising and marketing strategies. Why bother crafting (and funding) a hefty communications campaign without utilizing the number one catalyst to recruit leads? Click, download, listen, like, share—no doubt you’ve been peppered with these same pop-ups vying for your attention. And no doubt you’ve ignored equally as many pop-ups (probably with an eye roll thrown in for good measure).

However, communication strategies can’t afford to skip or skimp on these vital triggers. As Megan Marrs points out, effective CTAs incorporate not only striking design but more importantly compelling copy. So please note, whether in print or online, content still reigns as king.

As I was perusing one of my favorite fashion retail sites (don’t tell my husband), I encountered one of these CTAs. Same old, same old—until I read the last line.

Ann Taylor Call to Action

Option 1: “Enter Your Email for 50% Off Your Entire Purchase.”

Option 2: “No thanks, I prefer to pay full price.”

Wait…back up! I don’t want to pay full price! And hence, you see the beauty of this particular pop-up, not in the actual CTA but in the opt-out text. By cleverly articulating the consequences of opting out, Ann Taylor actually convinced me to relinquish my precious personal email address…hook, line and sinker. And now I’m a regular newsletter recipient!

The lesson? Take a second glance at your standard copy and look for a fresh way to frame the customer’s or client’s options. What’s in it for them? What will they truly lose if they refuse your offer? Honest and creative positioning cuts through the competing marketing “noise,” nabs the reader’s attention and just might make the difference in your sales, clicks, shares, downloads, sign-ups, tweets, posts, replies…you get the picture.

Now it’s your turn. What quality makes your copy effective?

Copy Cat: Can You Spot the Typo?

Copy Cat: Can You Spot the Typo?

June 2, 2015January 31, 2023 Sarah HattmanBlog, Copy Cat, MarketingAP style, apostrophe, live streaming, Netflix, proof reading, typos

The way we consume entertainment has changed. More and more of us are using online streaming services to watch movies and television at a time and location that fits our busy schedules. Netflix is leading the charge with more than 40 million US customers using its service – clearly its doing something right. However, Netflix recently caught my eye for something it did wrong. Did you happen to catch the typo in the above picture? If you didn’t, take another look.

It’s the apostrophe in “parent’s friends.” The way it reads, it’s as though Netflix is asking that you tell only one of your parent’s friends. The possessive apostrophe is quite possibly my biggest punctuation challenge. The Associated Press Stylebook (AP Style) rules for forming possessive words are fairly straightforward.

  • The possessive of a singular noun is formed by adding an apostrophe and “s” to the word.
  • The possessive of a plural noun is formed by adding only an apostrophe when the noun ends in “s.“

However, there are plenty of exceptions to the rules. For example, what do you do when the word is a singular noun that already ends in “s”? Well, it depends on the word following the noun. If it doesn’t start with “s,” you should add an apostrophe and “s.” However, if the word immediately following the noun does start with “s,” just add the apostrophe. E.g. hostess’s invitation versus hostess’ seat.

Whew! As you can see, it gets tricky fast once you start noting the exceptions, and that’s why my best advice is to keep the AP Stylebook close by at all times.

Perhaps the possessive apostrophe is Netflix’s Achilles’ Heel, but chances are this is just a case of a typo that was overlooked. Either way, hopefully it will help you pay closer attention to the use of apostrophes – whether writing copy of your own, or seeking entertainment outside of steaming online services in the form of a book or magazine.

Lilly for Target Launch – Brilliant or Bust?

Lilly for Target Launch – Brilliant or Bust?

May 1, 2015January 31, 2023 Tracy LathanFashion, Marketing, Public Relationsfashion, Marketing, PR

Unless you have been completely out of touch, you no doubt heard about the madness that the recent Lilly Pulitzer for Target launch created. Sadly, I found myself smack dab in the middle of the crazy. I am still recovering.

After a super busy week, my family decided to skip church and get caught up on the morning of Sunday, April 19. We were out of everything, so I planned to make an early grocery store and Target run for diapers, toilet paper and other essentials for the week ahead. My husband took the kids out to breakfast and I picked up a coffee and remember thinking how excited I was to be running these errands alone so I could have some peace and quiet. I knew the Lilly line for Target would be in stores starting that weekend, and I foolishly thought maybe I would pick up a cute bathing suit or dress for my daughter while I was there. What I saw when I drove up blew my mind…a huge line winding around the building waiting for the doors to open.

It got worse. Once they opened the doors people went crazy…running to the display, knocking each other over and grabbing as much as they could. The doors opened at 8:00 a.m. and the entire women’s collection was completely gone by 8:02 a.m. Some ladies were cheering and immediately on their phones trying to sell what items they had scored to friends and family. There were tween girls crying in front of the racks because there was nothing left. It was a sad site, folks. Even worse, ladies lined up like vultures outside the dressing room in hopes that something wouldn’t fit and get thrown back to the wolves.

I went on about my shopping just taking it all in. I ended up with a scarf and a jumpsuit for my daughter that someone had discarded in the cleaning products section after the mad dash. I wasn’t even sure I wanted them, but after what I had witnessed I felt like I won the lottery.

Since the launch, there has been a lot of discussion around whether or not it was a PR success or a fail. As a PR professional, I happen to agree with this article from the Bulldog Reporter that it was a little bit of both.

At a previous job, I worked on the Target account and have enormous respect for the brilliant work that comes out of their PR/Marketing department. They are a strategic machine. And since the same thing happened when they launched the Missoni line for Target back in 2011, I can’t believe they were blindsided by this response. After all, everyone is talking about Target, and there have even been social media sites created to buy and sell the Lilly items online. The “limited availability” drove the demand and the hype.

But at what cost? Does this affect how target loyalists feel about the brand? I don’t think so. Speaking for myself, I was not upset with Target for that spectacle…more than anything I was disheartened by people’s behavior. What do you think? Did what happened with the Lilly line affect how you feel about the Target brand? Or should we say job well done?

Trends Tuesday: Doorstep Delivery

Trends Tuesday: Doorstep Delivery

March 17, 2015January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Marketing, Trends2015 communication trends, communication trends, customized PR, PR trends, Raleigh PR, subscription boxes1 Comment on Trends Tuesday: Doorstep Delivery

The trend kicked off circa 1910 with the Wells Fargo Wagon, a legendary red coach that hand-delivered goodies to America’s townsfolk. Nearly a century later, the doorstep delivery concept has emerged as one of the nation’s leading economic trends. America has shifted from the traditional brick-and-mortar shopping experience in favor of online subscription delivery services, a new business model that curates and tailors a box of items to fit your preferences. Best of all, your personalized package appears weekly on your porch, as if by magic. Voila.

Subscription Boxes: All the Rage
With manageable shipping charges and forgiving return policies, subscription boxes have permeated nearly every sector of retail. The stalwart Birch Box, for example, boasts nearly 800,000 active global subscribers who enjoy its grooming and lifestyle products. Pet owners pamper their pooches with customized collars and flavored toys from Bark Box, while Lego fans stock their arsenal with Brick Loot‘s specialty items. (Bonus tip: Check out this review from a special Clairemont friend, Pugnacious10.)

What’s the Draw?
What happened to the traditional haul to the mall? Our harried schedules combined with our waning attention spans drive consumers to seek instant gratification. But this burgeoning trend reveals even more about the American psyche. Forbes.com suggests that consumers may thrive off of the adrenaline of a weekly surprise or crave the ego boost of hand-picked packages.

Customize Your Com
Communication trends, too, must respond to the public’s yen for customized experiences. Apple’s app, News360, allows users to hand-craft a newsfeed, and Facebook personalizes its infamous ads based on the user’s recent internet searches. (No doubt my newsfeed will be jammed with Loot Crate‘s promos after this blog.) Our audiences won’t settle for the traditional “spray and pray” public relations methods. From media pitches to tweets, effective communication stands on the three-legged stool of specificity, individuality and tailored timing.

For a Little Retail Therapy…
Then again, some of us just plain like to shop. And if that’s the case, check out these top 20 box picks. Our favorite, however, is our own client’s freshness in a box . Papa Spud’s is a North Carolina CSA (Community Supported Agricultural) service that delivers local, seasonal groceries straight to your door—from fresh produce, dairy and meat to granola, chocolate and jams.

Timely AND tasty!

#HairProbs we all have been there. I mean, how many countless times have you been tardy for something because of your hair?

Ever have a morning where you absolutely just cannot get your hair right? I find that that is me 90 percent of mornings. I take so much time prepping or planning a great style at night only to wake up in the morning and have to change it repeatedly.

Aussie is inspiring women to #DitchTheDrama and spend less energy on their hair and more time living carefree! The new line of products encourages women to never stress about styling with easy steps to tame testy tresses and detangle morning messes.

Not only does the commercial ad feature a hilarious man talking endlessly about his hair, but “Ditch the Hair Drama” copy flashes across the screen. Thanks to Aussie’s copy I now am well aware how ridiculous I sound about my hair.

Join me, #DitchtheHairDrama!
