My First 30 Days at a Raleigh PR Agency: Day 11

June 13, 2012January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Entry-Level PR Job, Marketingentry-level PR job, entry-level PR position, PR Agency, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agency, Twitter, Twitter for businesses

If you remember my blog from day four on the job, I recently put together several e-books for professional development. This week, Dana has assigned each of us a different one of these books, and I have been reading a Hubspot manual about how to attract customers with Twitter. I’m familiar with recreational Twitter use, but it’s not my favorite social media platform, so I have never really taken it upon myself to do more research into how to use Twitter for business purposes (beyond the basics). 6 Steps to Optimize Twitter for Search was one of the chapters that really appealed to me, and I’ve shared some of the tips below:

Make Twitter pay off for your company with these tips from Hubspot

1. Make Twitter handles spam-free. To ensure that your Twitter page is one of the top hits on Google, Bing or any other search engine, try to avoid using numbers in your user name. Since many spammers’ Twitter handles include numbers (e.g., @Name456781), when Google’s algorithm scans links on Twitter, it often disregards such usernames because it cannot differentiate what is a legitimate username and what is spam.

2. Include keywords in your bio. With only 160 characters to create a valuable Twitter bio, don’t waste space with too many industry keywords. Instead, reflect your business in an accurate and meaningful way that will help improve your search visibility. Also, since search engines often display Twitter bios in the links’ description on the results page, make sure you bio is attention grabbing!

3. Build your reach. Simple concept, but apparently overlooked by many. According to Google and Bing, both of their algorithms check the authority of every user tweeting, so make sure to gain a following for better SEO.

4. Create a special subset of keywords. Make a list of keywords or phrases that your business attempts to rank in search engines. For instance, key phrases Clairemont would want to rank for include “Public Relations” or “Raleigh PR agency.” Shorten longer key phrases and pick a smaller subset of keywords for Twitter. Then, use theses phrases regularly in your tweets to boost SEO.

5. Keep tweet lengths in the retweet safe zone. To ensure that your SEO keywords and phrases are not deleted when another user shares your tweets, give your tweets about 10-20 characters of wiggle room. This keeps those keywords safe from being deleted when ”RT @username” is added to the shared tweet. Plus, data indicates that 120-130 character tweets have the highest click-through rates.

6. Create your own inbound links. Lastly, make your content interesting enough that other influencers on Twitter will retweet it. Both Google and Bing take the value of Twitter authority figures and correlate it with the value of the link. So, the number of followers a user who retweets your content has is important for search engines that are measuring the value and importance of the retweeted link.

More Monday: Are You Briar Chapel’s Best Buddy?

March 5, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Social Media + Influencer EngagementBest Buddy Contest, Blog, Briar Chapel, Buddy Scooter, Facebook, green community, Pinterest, Social Media, sweepstakes, Twitter

Our client Briar Chapel, the Triangle’s largest green community, just launched its Best Buddy Contest, and we’ve got one question: are you up to the challenge? We’ve spent the past several months working closely with the Briar Chapel team to develop this contest, and during the process, we helped to chose what we think is an incredibly awesome, green-thinking prize — a Buddy Scooter. So let us ask you again. Are you up to the challenge?

Here’s a little more about the contest straight from the Briar Chapel blog.

Are You Briar Chapel’s Best Buddy?

The big prize: a Buddy Scooter!

With Earth Day fast approaching, we at Briar Chapel want to pay tribute to Mother Earth by hosting a fun contest, open to all of our friends, in the hopes of finding our #bcBestBuddy. What makes someone our best buddy, you might ask.  The way we at Briar Chapel see it, it’s someone who loves our brand, our community and living a green lifestyle, and makes an effort to share this information through their various social networking outlets. For example, do you read our blog or Facebook page and comment? Do you “check in” to various spots around the neighborhood using Foursquare? What about our events – Did you attend our Pepper Festival and tweetpic photos? While these are just a few examples, you get the idea!

If you partake in things of this nature, Briar Chapel wants to reward you with our “Best Buddy Contest,” beginning March 2 and ending April 15, 2012, with the grand prize winner being announced on April 21 at our Earth Day event.  Each week, participants will have the opportunity to earn a maximum of 50 points through various tasks. While we will give you specific opportunities to earn 25 points each week, which are mandatory, the other 25 are up to you to acquire through the many methods we’ve laid out below. We will reward the Buddy with the most points each week with cool gifts (iTunes cards, certificates to local restaurants, gas cards, etc.), and our Grand Prize winner will win a “Buddy” scooter, similar to the one pictured. Interested? Keep reading to find out how to enter.

How to Play:
Over the next 45 days, we will post a series of weekly blogs that will ask you to do specific things: ex. We may ask you to visit the community and check in on FourSquare @ the Dog Park, or you could be asked to retweet an announcement about an upcoming event or upload a Photo to Facebook of your favorite kitchen at Briar Chapel.

Free Advice Friday: The Dos and Don’ts of Social Media Etiquette

January 20, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Free Advice, Social Media + Influencer Engagementdos and don'ts, etiquette, Facebook, Real Simple, rules, social disgraces, Social Media, Twitter2 Comments on Free Advice Friday: The Dos and Don’ts of Social Media Etiquette

Our intern Ashely Hurteau shares her thoughts (and sense of humor) on social media etiquette.

If you are a member of the social media world (and my guess is that if you’re reading this, you are), then you’ve seen it, too. You’ve also cringed with second-hand embarrassment. This atrocity that I speak of is the lack of etiquette that is all too present in social media.

From overly dramatic status updates to inappropriate photos, it seems as though manners and grace are not taken into consideration when posting on the Internet. Real Simple magazine and their readers agree.

After polling 945 readers, Real Simple homed in on the top ‘social DISgraces’ as voted on by their readers. Allow me to share some of these, along with some helpful tips to avoid making the same mistakes.

  • Save the vague, disconcerting status updates (i.e. “Jennifer wonders whether it has all been worth it.”) and personal problems for your real friends, not your 856 social media friends. You will not receive the advice you seek, and according to Real Simple readers, it is the most annoying type of post there is – even more annoying than chronic complaining!
  • When you’re friend requesting, make sure you keep it to just that – your friends. Randomly asking someone to be your friend is one of the top-ranking annoyances on Facebook. A good tip: if you are trying to reconnect with an old friend or acquaintance, send a message along with the request to serve as a refresher and avoid being labeled a creep.
  • When tagging photos of others or yourself, have some respect. No one wants to see anyone three sheets to the wind or too much PDA. Think before you tag, and if there is any question, ask those individuals in the picture whether they would like it tagged or not.
  • The number one sin that is committed on Facebook and Twitter? In my opinion, it’s foul language. My friends on Facebook include teachers, family and co-workers. The idea that one of my friends could drop the F-bomb on a comment or my wall for my boss to see is mortifying.

Social media is designed to put you, your company or product out there for the masses to see. Do it with dignity, and remember, if you would not want your grandmother to see it, you probably should not post it!

What do you think? Please feel free to share some of your ideas – the more advice, the better!

More Monday: Kutcher Calls It Quits

November 21, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Social Media + Influencer EngagementAshton Kutcher, Joe Paterno, Katalyst, Peter Shankman, Twitter1 Comment on More Monday: Kutcher Calls It Quits

If you’re a fan of celebrity gossip (or even if you’re not), you’ve probably heard the news: Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore are getting divorced. To say it has overshadowed other controversies surrounding the young new star of Two and a Half Men would be an understatement. We’re here to fill you in on what you missed.

Last week, Kutcher, unaware of the emerging case of child sex-abuse against Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, tweeted the following:

Obviously, the only thing in poor taste was the tweet, but Kutcher later realized his mistake and quickly attempted to make amends with his many (and some very angry) fans — 8,403,607 to be exact. It was during this process that I think he really went wrong (the tweet I can easily forgive – everyone makes mistakes!).

In a short tweet on Nov. 10, Ashton wrote “Twitter Management” and shared a hyperlink to his blog. There he wrote, “Up until today, I have posted virtually every one of my tweets on my own, but clearly the platform has become too big to be managed by a single individual….I’m going to turn the management of the feed over to my team at Katalyst as a secondary editorial measure, to ensure the quality of its content.”

I think social media expert Peter Shankman put it best, “NO, NO, NO, NO, NO.”

“The second you hand over your Twitter account to your people,” Shankman wrote, “your account stops being real, your voice starts being ‘crafted’ and you start being out of touch.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Right now, more than ever before, Ashton needs to be able to speak for himself. Eight million fans didn’t sign up to follow some production company (albeit Ashton’s production company). They want to hear from Ashton.

So what can we take away from this? One: own your mistakes. Two: move on. Three: don’t give up.

What are your thoughts on the matter? What do you think Kutcher could do to wrong this right (and no, we’re not talking about the tweet itself, we’re talking about his decision to hand over his Twitter account). We’d love to hear more from you!
