The Benefits of Having Your Business “In the News”

January 14, 2013January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Clairemont Client News, Entry-Level PR Job, Hiring a PR FirmBeing newsworthy, Business in the news2 Comments on The Benefits of Having Your Business “In the News”

In addition to helping Clairemont clients get in the news, we love to help them merchandise their media hits. We’ve found that many organizations understand and are excited about the benefits of media exposure itself (awareness of the company, getting the attention of potential customers, increasing employee morale — just to name a few), but don’t typically think about what can be done with the story once it has been published, posted or aired. Below are a few of the many ways you can merchandise your news coverage and further maximize your PR budget:

awards-wall
Some of Clairemont’s awards displayed in the office.

By capitalizing on news exposure, your business can:

1. Compile publicity articles and material into a book that you can show to prospects, clients or investors. A publicity book or press book provides an easy way for these audiences to see who you are, what you do and what you are capable of doing. Showing that your company is newsworthy and credible will help reinforce why your company is desirable to work with compared to your competitors.

2. Many publications present awards in various categories. If you have won publication awards, feature them on your website, social media and advertisements. If you do not have any of these awards, you should work for them! Publication awards establish superiority over your competitors and third-party credibility for your work.

 3. Promote articles written about your products in your advertisements. This makes your ads more credible. In advertising your company and products, referencing previous publicity (i.e., “As seen in Southern Living Magazine…”) you are referencing good things that others have said about you, which can help establish credibility with consumers.

 4. Send articles to industry opinion leaders. Consumers value what opinion leaders say or think about a product or company. Many view them as “in the know” regarding their field of expertise. Sending opinion leaders articles about your company and its products forges a positive relationship with them, meaning you are more likely to get their free word-of-the-mouth promotion.

 5. Include your published articles on your website and share through social media. Articles serve as valuable content for your website and your social media channels. Make sure the articles are easy to access. Give article summaries so visitors can quickly get the message without having to read the entire document.

 6. Use your articles to get more publicity. Carefully! Sharing one outlet’s story of your company with another news outlet can be risky. It can cause the second editor to say that the story has already been done. However, done in the right way, existing coverage can reinforce your newsworthy-status and potentially help the editor think to see the value of another story idea about your company. Perhaps more effective than directly sharing coverage with other news contacts is building a strong base of media coverage that can easily be found online for reporters who might decide to research your company in consideration of covering it. We often see this to be the case with our clients who are growing into having a regional or national story. When we pitch that higher-tiered media contact, chances are, he/she will Google our client. We want the results to show steady local and perhaps trade coverage.

What are the ways you merchandise your news coverage? For more ideas, leave your email address and we will send you our complete list.

10th Annual Gingerbread Benefit Secures Regional Coverage

December 12, 2012January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Clairemont Client News, In Our Community, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agency, The Clairemont Team10th Annual Gingerbread Benefit, Carolina Parent, media coverage, media relations, Our State, Public Relations, Raleigh Public Relations Agency, Southern Living, Triangle Family Services1 Comment on 10th Annual Gingerbread Benefit Secures Regional Coverage

For the past three years, Clairemont has had the honor of promoting and participating in one of the Triangle’s most anticipated holiday events of the season – Triangle Family Services’ Annual Gingerbread Benefit, the premier, vital fundraising event for the longstanding local nonprofit.

This year, marked not only the tenth anniversary of the Benefit, but also the 75th anniversary of Triangle Family Services, which provides programs to families in need in the Raleigh-Durham area in three key areas – financial stability, family safety and mental health services.

With 2012 marking prominent milestones for both the Benefit and Triangle Family Services, we knew that we wanted to make this year’s Annual Gingerbread Benefit bigger and better than any other.

Our plan? A detailed and strategic media relations campaign that would target news coverage in both regional and local publications. With gingerbread-themed media kits in tow, our work started this summer with our “Christmas in July” push to long-lead news outlets. Diligent pitching and coordination with our media contacts continued through the year and throughout the day of the actual event.

The result? Substantial coverage promoting the 10th Annual Gingerbread Benefit in leading publications like Southern Living Magazine, Our State Magazine, Carolina Parent Magazine and Philanthropy Journal, just to name a few.

Southern Living Magazine, Nov. 2012
Our State Magazine, Dec. 2012
Carolina Parent Magazine, Nov. 2012

Whaddaya Think About That?

December 14, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Clairemont Client News, In Our CommunityABC 11, Cary Citizen, Cary Magazine, Independent Weekly, media coverage, NBC 17, News & Observer, Ninth Annual Gingerbread Benefit, Triangle Family Services, Winston Salem Journal
Coverage by the News & Observer

In lieu of our usual Q&A session, we’d like to dedicate this Whaddaya Think Wednesday to Triangle Family Services’ 9th Annual Gingerbread Benefit. As huge proponents of this wonderful organization that helps more than 7,000 individuals and families in the Triangle each year, we were honored to create a media strategy for the benefit, the agency’s premier fundraising event.

Believe it or not, we began planning our media strategy for this year’s Gingerbread Benefit at last year’s Gingerbread Benefit! After successfully landing coverage with the News & Observer, Triangle Business Journal, Cary Citizen, Garner Citizen, ABC 11 and several local online news sources (and winning an Award of Excellence during the North Carolina Public Relations Society InSpire Awards, as well as a Gold and Best in Division award from the Raleigh Public Relations Society Sir Walter Raleigh Awards), we set even higher goals for 2012.

Through carefully crafted messaging and diligent pitching efforts, all of the hard work paid off! TFS received some really critical coverage before the big Dec. 1 event, making it the most successful Gingerbread Benefit to date! So whaddaya think about that?

What an Honor, Sir!

October 12, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Clairemont Client News, Public RelationsBriar Chapel, Clairemont Communications, Drexel Heritage, Marbles Kids Museum, Meredith College, Raleigh Public Relations Society, Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Excellence in Communications, Triangle Family Services

A few weeks ago, the Clairemont team was honored at the Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Excellence in Communication ceremony hosted by the Raleigh Public Relations Society. It was my first Raleigh Public Relations Society event, so I was particularly excited to learn more about the organization and to network with fellow communications professionals, including our office neighbors over at the Marbles Kids Museum.

All in all, it was a lovely evening spent among some of the area’s most talented PR professionals. Hats off to everyone who pitched in to make the evening a smashing success.

The Clairemont team brought home six awards (this brings our total award count to 20 for the year)! Among the awards were the following: Gold – Best in Division in the “More Bang for the Buck” Special Event/Campaign category for the Eighth Annual Triangle Family Services Gingerbread Benefit; Gold in the Total Communications/Community Relations Campaign for Organizational Identity/Promotion category for Briar Chapel; Silver  in the Publications/Brochure/Handbook/Guidebook category for our Drexel Heritage furniture collections brochures; and Silver in the Publications category for our Clairemont Communications Quickie Card.

Congratulations to the marketing and communications team over at Meredith College who we couldn’t help but notice was a big winner that night. And congratulations to all of our fellow award winners and friends. We’ll see you next year!

Thanks to all who texted, tweeted, emailed, G+’ed and Facebooked this weekend asking if “my” episode of Your Business on msnbc tv was going to air Sunday morning as scheduled. Due to hurricane coverage, it has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 4.

Didn’t know that Clairemont played a role in the makeover of Asheville Playgrounds and that the entire thing was orchestrated and documented by msnbc? See my last post for details.
