Burger King, the Humor King

Burger King, the Humor King

June 25, 2018January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Marketing, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PRbrand, branding, Marketing, Raleigh PR Agency, restaurant marketing, Restaurant PR

If ever there was a prize for a bait-and-switch in the restaurant industry, IHOP just took home the gold.

The breakfast joint ditched its famous Rooty Tooty Fresh ‘N Fruity pancake meal in favor of a different kind of combo — burgers and fries. And this wasn’t just a small tweak in the menu. The International House of Pancakes (IHOP) revamped its entire identity to become the International House of Burgers, or IHOB.

Twitter raved over Wendy’s classic response to a new player in this fast-food fight. Certainly, IHOB’s new focus might pose a threat to “the real OG,” as one Twitter user dubbed Wendy’s. But another franchise stood more to lose by simple virtue of its name.

Burger King.

In many circumstances, sheer interest in a new restaurant might have threatened Burger King’s brand recognition. But with a little quick thinking, Burger King’s marketing team leveraged a bold response to secure its market share. Well hello, humor.

What can you learn for your own business?

The Magic of Brand Humor

Your brand isn’t a logo or slogan. As we’ve mentioned in other blogs, a brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room. It’s a feeling, an experience. And it springs from qualities resembling human characteristics, like “creative,” “tenacious,” “bold,” “playful” or “witty.” Just like people, every brand has a humorous streak in its “personality,”  albeit of different tones and varieties. And at the end of the day, people want to connect with people, not brands. So tap into your brand’s distinct flavor of wit to forge a deeper connection with your fans, customers and followers.

Finding Your Funny

Brainstorm qualities that unveil your brand’s lighthearted side. Are you the quiet, dry type? The bold jokester? The playful pal? Humor doesn’t necessarily need to tie directly to your product or service; it simply can identify you as a dynamic company with a witty, engaged staff unafraid to push the boundaries. Others feel welcome to interact and express themselves in your conversation. Explore voicing your sense of humor through a variety of mediums, from a parody video to — yes, indeed — even a quippy cat meme.

Wield Wit with Care

As Forbes points out, effective brand humor can be a fine line to walk. Heavy-handed jokes can easily backfire when they cross the line into demeaning sarcasm. Keep close tabs on the tenor of your communication and seek an inclusive rather than exclusive tone. While it feels lighthearted and spontaneous, well-honed brand humor requires significant thought and planning to craft a streamlined output. When in doubt, consult a communication professional as you develop your brand voice.

At Clairemont, we help our clients craft a compelling brand voice that connects with the personality — the hearts — of their audiences. Learn more about honing your brand!

A bar stool at a kitchen island. A decorative couch with a seahorse pillow. A rocking chair on a wrap-around porch. A pink heart-shaped ottoman.

When your office is a beautiful historic house that’s been expertly decorated, there is no shortage of places to sit. Our team members share the spots they gravitate toward when coming to work each day.

Dana: “I love our kitchen island. Have you ever noticed that when you throw a party, everyone ends up in the kitchen? It’s the same at The Clairemont House. The island is where we have team meetings, host guests for meetings over coffee, charge our phones and computers and indulge in treats from our favorite local restaurants. And working here often feels like a party in other ways, too.”

Cherith: “Sneak upstairs to the second-floor office (which, P.S., doubles as part of Clairemont’s cozy Airbnb suite.) Think warm, natural light, bold colors and oodles of open space for a ready dose of creative inspiration.”

Tracy: “The downstairs hallway, or “wall of fame,” is my choice. It’s the space where we display awards the agency has won and other recognition our team members have received. It’s a great reminder of the hard work our team has put in and how much we have accomplished.”

Nathan: “My favorite nook of the Clairemont house is the front porch. Hearing the breeze rustle the trees is incredibly relaxing, and it is quite serene to have all sorts of people and animals walk by while I work.”

Yasmine: “The Crank Room is my pick because it’s bright, warm and so cozy. And have you seen the pink, heart-shaped ottomans?”

Do you see your future favorite spot, either as a client or team member? Send us an email or stop on by and The Clairemont House to say hello.

Miss America: Brand Revolution?

Miss America: Brand Revolution?

June 6, 2018January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Marketing, Public RelationsBrand Evolution, Brand Refresh, branding, Miss America, Miss America Pageant, Public Relations

After a century, Miss America banished its bikinis and scrapped its evening stilettos. For almost 100 years, this iconic national pageant touted the swimsuit and an evening gown competitions as defining hallmarks of its queen. In fact, the Miss America program was originally billed as a swimsuit pageant.

A head-tilting shift, for sure.

In today’s tumultuous social climate, businesses are undergoing constant self-evaluation to find their place in a dynamic market. Issues arise, expectations evolve and needs change. But how far do you go to stay profitable … or simply relevant? Dare you hurtle into a brand revamp?

While it broke tradition, the Miss America Organization didn’t actually overthrow its brand or rework its roots. Instead, it followed the premises of a brand evolution.

When is a brand evolution necessary, and what does it entail for your business?

Step 1: Assess the data. Identify the trend.

First, pinpoint evidence that prompts you to consider a shift. Is it a sales slump over time, a trackable market share decrease or – heaven forbid – ongoing negative publicity? Perhaps the signs aren’t cut-and-dried. How are the cultural climate and social dynamics evolving in relation to the tenants of your brand? The backlash of a sexual harassment lawsuit and the #MeToo era, for example, was a core factor that prompted the Miss America Organization to take a hard look at its program.

Step 2: Return to your roots.

When in flux, a tempting knee-jerk fix is to reinvent the wheel. Don’t. You created your business with a distinct vision to fulfill a specific need in the market. Take a moment to revisit your core founding principles — your goal and your mission.

What defines you? What problems are you aiming to solve for your target audience? What value do you bring in one or two concise statements? Once you’ve reconnected with these defining cornerstones, you’re ready to turn an eye to your brand.

Step 3: Explore the opportunities.

A brand evolution can entail a multi-faceted, full-scale campaign with fresh slogans, redesigned logos and new services and processes. But remember, a brand is not a logo or a slogan. I’ve heard it said that a brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room. It’s the feeling or essence that prospects experience when your name is mentioned.

A brand evolution can spring from an assessment of the dialogue surrounding your business. For example, how can you shift the rhetoric describing your values? Based on your core tenants, what services, products or experiences do you need to add? And just as importantly, what do you need to let go? Are there any new audiences that need your refreshed presence?

Brand evolutions require a thoughtful, careful process based on research and meaningful discussion. Looking to boost your own brand presence? Drop us a line!

Meet Nathan, Clairemont Intern

Meet Nathan, Clairemont Intern

May 24, 2018January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Entry-Level PR Job, The Clairemont Teamclairemont internship, PRSSA, Public Relations, the clairemont team, Western Carolina

As a rising senior, I am majoring in communication with a concentration in public relations and a minor in entrepreneurship. Apparently, I am the first intern that Clairemont has had from Western Carolina University (the best university this side of the Mississippi), so I am excited to bring a rural flavor to the City of Oaks!

How Did I Get Started?

I originally hail from the great state of Washington and have always been known for my outgoing and often goofy attitude. Known as the class clown throughout my days in grade school, when I finally got to college I figured that I needed to do something social that involved lots of interaction. I felt that communication could be one of my skills, but I really couldn’t discern between the many fields within the major. So, I put down public relations on my application and hoped for the best.

It wasn’t until I attended my first PRSSA National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia during my first semester that I found out what PR really was and how it is connected to writing, speaking and design. Now, I am president of my school’s chapter of PRSSA and cannot wait to be a part of the new wave of public relations professionals.

What’s to Like about PR?

Communication, for me, is not just about messages and how people send, receive and perceive them. I love communication because I love language. I have a deep love for writing and how it enables one to mold and craft the human language. I decided my passion for language was what I wanted to pursue, and I didn’t need to look past this field to utilize that passion. If you stop and look around, you can see miscommunication everywhere in the world. It is shocking to see how many problems exist that could easily be solved with better communication. One of my professors has always said that anything in life starts with good communication. In any field of work and with any task, one must always start with communication to ensure everything else can happen.

I love PR because it gives me the opportunity to connect with people and solve problems. I get to learn about ideas and concepts from all walks of life while challenging myself to come up with innovative solutions and worthwhile initiatives. Human connection is what drives all interaction in this world, so why not be at the crossroads of it all?

As a Sidenote…

I direct a lot of my passion for writing to music. I have been playing bass guitar and writing music for almost 10 years. Seeing live music is my biggest hobby, and I strive to spend as much time as I can seeing my favorite local small-time and big-time bands. If I am not jamming out to punk rock or 60s classics, you can find me enjoying a craft beer or taking a hike in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.

Meet Yasmine, Clairemont Intern

Meet Yasmine, Clairemont Intern

May 22, 2018January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Professional Development, The Clairemont Teamclairemont intern, NCSU, Public Relations, the clairemont team

When I was a child, I was an avid reader. The first book I ever read on my own was a selection from my extensive Winnie the Pooh collection. After that, I picked up a love of books and haven’t let it go since. Maybe that’s why PR was such an obvious fit; I love people’s stories.

Meet Yasmine

I was named after my great-grandmother whom I was never able to meet. My name is Yasmine Evans, and I’m what you might call a pioneer for my family. I’m the first in my immediate family to go to college. There’s a lot riding on my academic success, but thankfully, I have that love of books to keep me going. I’m a rising senior at NC State University (go Pack!) and major in communications with a concentration in public relations. I also minor in Japanese language, which tells you that I have an eclectic range of interests. I really love skincare and marry that passion with my love of Japanese and Korean culture. My shelves at home are full of products from overseas.

Where It All Started

Because of my love for people’s lives and the stories that are connected to them, I considered journalism while I was in high school. Once entering college, I discovered public relations and wanted to know more. A professor once told me that PR is storytelling. You tell the world your clients’ stories. As someone in public relations, you garner the right attention, you inform and you bring new ideas to the table every day. I knew that was what I wanted to do.

Clairemont

I was excited when I heard from the team that they wanted me to intern for them this summer. I knew that I would learn so much from these talented professionals and would have fun doing it. The Clairemont House, home to Clairemont Communications,  is an inspiring story in itself—a well-designed space with old charm and modern flair. The small team enables me to participate and learn from many different projects and assignments. We’re truly a team here! I hope to bring my passion for writing and people to Clairemont, and I hope to become our clients’ master storyteller.
