5 benefits of working in the office

5 benefits of working in the office

November 8, 2021January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Public Relations, The Clairemont TeamClairemont Communications, PR, PR Agency, Public Relations, Raleigh PR

During the pandemic, working from home became the norm. We are excited to report that in the past few weeks, the Clairemont team officially transitioned back to working at The Clairemont House for the first time since March 2020. Being together in person has made us realize how valuable onsite work can be. Keep reading to learn our top 5 forgotten benefits of working in the office.

1. Collaborative work environment

To start, being in person at an office with your team creates a collaborative work environment. Now instead of exchanging ideas through never-ending email chains or logging onto yet another Zoom call, you can schedule meetings in person, stop by a coworker’s desk to ask a question or pop down the hall, depending on your office set-up.

2. Adds structure to your schedule

Another benefit of working in the office is that it creates structure and encourages a healthy work-life balance. Working in the same space you relax in can make it harder to turn off your brain when it is time to rest. Physically being in a new environment will separate your work life from your home life. Commuting to work also allows the time to take a break and to reflect or just let your brain rest between activities.

3. Easier to build professional relationships

This next benefit is especially important for young, entry-level professionals or employees new to the organization. It is that working in an office makes it easier to build professional relationships. There are simply more opportunities to share experiences and develop connections with coworkers when you are in person. Being in a conference room or taking a lunch break together gives you an opportunity to connect that sitting on mute with your camera off doesn’t.

4. Eliminates outside distractions

Another benefit of working in the office is that it eliminates outside distractions. We can all admit that home offices come with their own set of distractions. Whether it’s the dog barking, the doorbell ringing or balancing a partner’s home workspace with your own, working from home can be distracting. Having the option to go to work creates space from your home life and can make it easier to focus on your work.

5. Improves efficiency

Working in the office improves efficiency by eliminating distractions, reducing screen fatigue and improving communication amongst the team. Explaining ideas or asking a question virtually can take up more time than you would imagine. Typing every detail in an email and waiting for a response often creates a lag time that working in the office eliminates.

We are excited to be back together and collaborate as a team to best serve our clients. Let us know if you agree with our 5 benefits of working in the office or if you have any other benefits. See you in the office!

MEET DEREK, OUR NEWEST MEMBER

MEET DEREK, OUR NEWEST MEMBER

October 25, 2021January 31, 2023 Derek BullingtonBlog, Raleigh PR Agency, The Clairemont TeamClairemont Communications, D.C., Derek Bullington, Minneapolis, PR, PR Agency, Public Relations, Raleigh PR, Raleigh PR Agency, Washington D.C.

For the past three years, I have been a Clairemont Communications client while working with the International Association of Fire Chiefs on the volunteer firefighters campaign for the state of North Carolina. The Clairemont team made us feel like we were their only client. They were going above and beyond on our deliverables. No matter how hard it was to rein in all our crazy ideas. The excitement and eagerness to support the client always impressed me.

Client

During my time as a Clairemont client, I formed a very close bond with the team. I started to really enjoy learning the ins and outs of public relations. A seed was planted in the back of my mind that this would be a great career fit for me. Something I would truly enjoy doing. I also started to see how my background in art and my career in the non-profit sector for 11 years prepared me to work in PR.

If I learned anything in art school, it was to embrace my creative side and to be flexible in the work I do. Creativity and flexibility are important skills in PR. You need to be able to pitch innovative ideas and ready to change directions if they do not work. I had also gained a basic skill set that would be valuable in the PR industry. Writing press releases and building relationships with a variety of companies and individuals throughout my career in non-profits set me up for a career in PR. As my luck would have it, a position opened with the Clairemont team, and I immediately jumped at the opportunity to apply.

Client to employee

After participating in a thorough interview process and the anticipation of a job offer, I was getting ready to switch careers and move down to Raleigh! I am so excited to be here and to learn under Dana and her team! Not only do I get to work with an amazing group, but I get to use the creativity that has been dormant for so long while working a typical desk job. Only 10 weeks into the job and I am already back to creating art in my spare time. This is something that I haven’t done in several years. I think my parents would be glad that I’m finally putting my college degree to good use by carrying that artistic spark over to my work with Clairemont.

My years in non-profit were not all bad, quite the opposite. During this time I worked for some of the top medical societies, the YMCA, Travelers Insurance and the IAFC. I broke out of my introverted bubble and built relationships with diverse groups. I worked with the top pharmaceutical companies and medical research institutions, at-risk youth, did fundraising and helped recruit and retain volunteer firefighters nationwide. While I enjoyed my work in non-profit organizations and collected an amazing amount of knowledge and skills, I am ready to see what I can bring to Clairemont.

Settling in to Raleigh

My career has taken me from Washington D.C. to Tucson, AZ, out to Minneapolis and Northern Virginia. I have experienced some of the hottest and coldest weather the U.S. has to offer. It seems like Raleigh will be a good mix (but the humidity!) and I’m thrilled to settle here. I have enjoyed exploring an amazing city that seems to not stop growing and diversifying. Some of the best food and drinks I have ever had, have been here in Raleigh. I have joined group cycling rides and explored the many parks and festivals Raleigh has to offer. In Raleigh, I believe I have found my new home away from home and look forward to continued amazement with this area. I’m excited to make new memories and reach the next level of my career here at Clairemont Communications.

PRSSA prepares students to be PR pros

PRSSA prepares students to be PR pros

October 8, 2021January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Public RelationsPublic Relations

PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) is a household name among PR professionals. The professional organization is known for its annual conferences, awards including the Silver and Bronze Anvil and national job network.

Undergraduate (and graduate) students can join PRSA’s collegiate affiliate organization, PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) to learn about different career paths and network with communication practitioners to help launch their careers before graduation.

PRSSA at NC State

Clairemont intern and president of PRSSA at NC State, Anna Beth McCormick, says that PRSSA’s mission is to amplify members’ knowledge about the profession of public relations. PRSSA helps members answer big questions like what is public relations? How can I succeed in PR? And what kinds of jobs are available once I graduate?

The PRSSA chapter at NC State holds professional development meetings that focus on topics such as personal branding, resume building, LinkedIn and social media workshops. Members also hear from guest speakers in the Raleigh PRSSA network, attend Q&A panels, department events and so much more!

In 2020, PRSSA at NC State successfully held its largest annual networking event, PR Day, virtually for the first time. One of the benefits of having PR Day on Zoom was that speakers from all over the country could attend. Dwayna Haley, “The PR Girl” (Atlanta, GA), was the 2020 keynote speaker in addition to numerous professionals from the Raleigh PRSA network and beyond.

Last year, PRSSA also hosted virtual agency tours and met with representatives from French West Vaughan, Ketchum and APCO Worldwide. Additionally, PRSSA and the NC State College of Humanities and Social Sciences co-hosted an event with alumna guest speaker Adonna Biel, former deputy national secretary for Biden for President, about her experiences in government public relations.

PRSSA prepares students for a future in PR

Other benefits of PRSSA membership include exclusive access to (paid!) internship listings, scholarships, awards and leadership opportunities.

Joining PRSSA gives students partial membership into PRSA so that after graduation, they can get a discounted membership to PRSA.

Interested in being a guest speaker, have an internship opportunity to share or, want to join PRSSA at NC State? Get connected with them at ncsuprssa6@gmail.com.

Client Spotlight: Vita Vite in This is Raleigh

September 15, 2021January 31, 2023 Olivia NolesBlog, Clairemont Client News, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PRPublic Relations, Raleigh PR Agency, This Is Raleigh, Vita Vite, Vita Vite Raleigh

We loved seeing our client Lindsay Rice of Vita Vite featured in This Is Raleigh as part of their “interviews with locals” series.

In the interview, Lindsay details her love for Raleigh and how she started Vita Vite, an art gallery, wine bar and event space with two locations in Raleigh, one downtown and one in North Hills.

Lindsay was raised in a family that puts emphasis on time together around the table. This value combined with her background in the arts and love for travel inspired her to start Vita Vite.

Vita Vite has a relaxed, unpretentious environment where customers can sit in comfortable seating sections while enjoying wine, beer and charcuterie. It showcases Southern artists and focuses on wines from predominately small, family-run wineries around the world.

A New Chapter

A New Chapter

May 27, 2021January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Marketing, The Clairemont Teamfashion, France, graduation, luxury, Marketing, North Carolina, paris, Public Relations, university

Last summer, after months of confinement, isolation, and Zoom frustrations, I hit that dark day. Disconnected and despondent, I was uncertain of the world’s future and my own.

But then, a social media post took me to an unlikely place: the banks of the Seine, where I watched models float by on a barge while dressed in Balmain’s latest fashion line. I couldn’t stop smiling. Watching clips of the event on repeat, I realized the exhibition was a bold celebration in the face of last year’s adversity. “Balmain Sur Seine” was more than a publicity stunt powered by a social media campaign: it was joy and hope.

The moment captures so much of what I envision for my career as an advertising creative. A career I hope to launch with the MSc in Fashion, Design and Luxury Management program at the Grenoble École de Management in Paris, France. Hosting the fashion show on the water was innovative and beautiful, but the exhibition was also the first to be streamed on the social media platform TikTok. It was a groundbreaking venture in new media and connectivity –– connectivity that moves beyond physical borders and the limitations of a pandemic to reach global audiences.

As new media continues to integrate perspectives from around the world, a multicultural learning environment is crucial. To create innovative campaigns like “Balmain Sur Seine,” I must leave the United States’ social bubble and cross new borders myself. This program will provide me with that multicultural integration along with the solid foundation of industry skills and professional experience that I need.

I’ve always been intrigued by how words can be leveraged to connect with people. This fascination led me to study media and journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While studying abroad in 2019, I interned for the Paris-based journalism agency Worldcrunch. I translated articles from Le Monde and Les Echos into English, developed social media content and even wrote stories of my own. This experience helped me realize that rather than being a reporter on trends, I want to use storytelling to cultivate brand culture. This epiphany was a revelation of how I envision a meaningful career: one that influences taste and creates tangible impact.

With that fresh perspective, I redirected my career goals to advertising and public relations by exploring courses in marketing and joining Clairemont Communications in Raleigh, NC as a marketing and public relations intern. Over the past ten months, I’ve had the opportunity to work with clients big and small, develop social media strategy, compile coverage reports, attend press events, assemble media lists, pitch news outlets, edit videos, write blog posts and so much more.

In addition, I’ve gained valuable soft skills in time management, problem-solving, collaboration, effective communication and leadership. I’ve experienced both the joys and challenges of working in PR, which gives me an incredible head start in the marketing world as I embark on my next adventure. I’m forever grateful.

While I have built a solid foundation in media through my studies and professional experiences, I know enough now to realize what I have yet to learn and what I could accomplish by continuing my education. The MSc in Fashion, Design, and Luxury Management program at Grenoble École de Management would supply me with the industry knowledge and marketing fundamentals that I require to continue my career. My dream career is to be an in-house copywriter for a luxury fashion brand. This degree would supply me with the industry knowledge, marketing essentials and cultural immersion that are critical for success in the luxury industry.

Earlier this month, I graduated with distinction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Media and Journalism. Earning my degree not only marks the end of my time at UNC-Chapel Hill, but it also signals the end of my time as an intern at Clairemont Communications. While I’m excited to start this next chapter, I am sad to leave the Clairemont Team. Through their leadership and guidance, I have grown as both a professional and a person.

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.

By Clairemont intern Maia Guterbock, a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill.
