The Evolution of Maternity Fashion

The Evolution of Maternity Fashion

March 23, 2015January 31, 2023 Sarah HattmanBlog, Fashion, Oh Momma Mondaybaby bump, Kate Middleton, maternity fashion, royal baby

Clairemont team member Tracy Lathan 38 weeks pregnant with her first child – and looking as fashionable as ever!

There have been more than 31 million births this year and we are only three months into 2015. That’s a lot of pregnant women; however all eyes seem to be on Kate Middleton. As the Duchess of Cambridge is weeks away from giving birth to her second child, people around the globe are monitoring her every move eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next royal baby. Many people, especially women, are curious to see what outfits Kate will wear as she fulfills her royal duties as a pregnant woman. She always manages to step out donned in a chic, classic and sophisticated outfit that is appropriate for her role as duchess and very fashionable.

I have to admit, I am fascinated to see how women approach maternity fashion. Do they work to conceal it or do they flaunt it? Looking back at maternity fashion during the past 100 years, it’s interesting to see how things have evolved.

Constriction

At the turn of the 20th century, all women wore corsets and pregnant women worked to constrain their growing bumps by wearing “maternity corsets” designed to contain their expanding waistlines. By the 1920s maternity corsets were replaced by girdles that confined the hips more than the waist. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the focus shifted from constriction to support.

Keep it Loose

Throughout the years, no matter the style, women found ways to conceal their baby bumps with loose clothing. Even flappers who were know to cut loose and wear fun flirty dresses, opted to hide their bump!

Shifting Perspective

Lucille Ball made a bold move in the 1950s when she publicly showed off her pregnant belly on-screen during filming of “I Love Lucy.”  However, it was Demi Moore’s decision to pose nude at seven months pregnant on the cover of Vanity Fair that really help shift the view of pregnancy and pregnant women from embarrassing to empowering.

Current Trends

These days just about anything goes when it comes to maternity fashion. On again given day, it’s not uncommon to see a pregnant woman wearing form-fitting shirts and another wearing very loose clothing. Fortunately, many of today’s popular styles are over-sized which allows women to forgo “maternity” clothing all together – and spend that money on baby clothes instead.

What is your preference for maternity style? Do you prefer to cover up and conceal or flaunt it?

The Beauty of Raleigh PR: Day 5 – “Business Casual”

The Beauty of Raleigh PR: Day 5 – “Business Casual”

January 14, 2015January 31, 2023 Jasmin SessomsBlog, Entry-Level PR Job, FashionClairemont Communications, professional development, Raleigh PR Agency, workplace attire

Editor’s Note: Clairemont enthusiastically welcomes Jasmin Sessoms to our team! Follow this former beauty queen’s journey as she documents her first 30 days in a Raleigh PR agency.

It’s your first day at work. Your boss lets you know that the dress code is “business casual”. Honestly, you don’t know what that means; you rack your brain trying to think about exactly what that is. You leave your stuffy suit behind and decide to wear your strapless sundress. When you arrive to work, your co-workers look nothing like you. Embarrassed, you realize that a little clarity on business casual is needed.
For many recent grads just like me, the days of throwing on sweat pants and a t-shirt just to make it to class are long gone. My mornings before class would be hectic and frustrating if I had no clue what I was wearing. During my undergrad days, I somehow expected my closet to work magic for me (not!).

Transitioning into the work force means new clothes, and I was ecstatic about trading my TOMS for heels and my Levi’s for slacks. Business casual may seem simplistic to some, but I find that a lot of people have a hard time understanding exactly how to dress for work.

Appropriate attire may be discussed a few times during the undergraduate experience, but when you enter the working world, you are bombarded with the realization that business professional (compared to business casual) has distinct rules.

The definition of business casual is vague, and a lot of times there is no general agreement. Factors that affect the dress code at work include the size of the company, the climate outside and the culture of the workplace. The office expectation here at Clairemont is business casual with the understanding that formal events may require business professional.
Here are a few tips that I generated if you, or anyone you know, fears being a little too causal at work.

1) Less isn’t more. For the business world I have found that showing a ton of skin isn’t in vogue. Dress with modesty.
2) Play it safe; slacks and/or khakis are your best bet if opting for pants.
3) Jeans are not considered business casual.
4) Dresses and skirts should reach knee length or longer. Avoid skirts with low cuts or high slits.
5) Knit shirts, sweaters and polos work great with mixing and matching.
6) Strapless tops and dresses should be avoided at all costs.
7) Open-toed shoes are acceptable, but be careful with flip flops and sandals in the summer.
8) Blazers or sports coats can help to polish your look.

Double-check yourself with a few more questions:
1) Would I wear this to bed?
2) Would I wear this to the bar?
3) Would I wear this to a Halloween costume party?

If you answered “yes” to any of these, choose something else for the workday. Hope this helps someone tomorrow morning!

Radiant Orchid: Fashionable Food?

Radiant Orchid: Fashionable Food?

When Pantone announced its 2014 Color of the Year, mags, blogs and morning shows exploded with the Radiant Orchid color wheel. Trendy DIY segments ran the gamut from refurbishing the sitting room (Cosmic Berry-hued walls) to reviving your couture (pair with shades of buttercup and mint).

Designers revamped our rides with plum Dodge Challengers and a magenta Bentley. And not to be outdone, Sephora spotlighted a collection of fuchsia lip stains and lilac nail varnishes for a splash of Hollywood glam.

Don’t tell, but there is a secret segment of laymen stylists that pursue trends beyond wardrobe design. We strike an unlikely balance of fashionista-meets-foody. (Don’t judge: your mouth waters too when the “hot light” is on at Krispy Kreme). We’d love to blend our passions of couture and cuisine, fashion and flavor, style and savor. A true debutant dining experience.

Lucky for us, we’ve uncovered a host of delicious ways to incorporate Radiant Orchid into one of our favorite household hobbies: making the menu. Don’t think of it as purple food; consider it a fashionable foray into a stylish culinary adventure.

A Fashionable Future for Technology

A Fashionable Future for Technology

July 3, 2014January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Fashion, Social Media + Influencer EngagementFashion Trends, Social Media, social media future, wearable technology

Guest post by our fabulous intern, Stephanie Zirker!

The millennials, often dubbed the “connected generation,” may be advanced, but they aren’t the end of the line. What will society coin our next generation, the ambassadors of new products being introduced daily? Being a millennial myself, I can say that we largely owe our “connectivity” to the companies that continue to design “the next new thing,” and without these newest gadgets, we would feel as if we were missing out on cutting edge trends in communication.

Consider Apple and its exclusive iPhone-to-iPhone capabilities that encourage buyers to turn to Apple technology in order to be part of the hippest tech culture. It’s hard to imagine that technology could somehow claim a bigger role in our daily lives. But a peek into the future reveals yet a closer level of integration between humans and devices – technologies with a fashionable flare.

What to Expect

Machinery can’t get much closer to our physical person than with the growing industry of “wearable technologies.” Before long, you won’t even have to move a muscle to see your updated Facebook feed or read urgent emails. For example, Google Glass combines vision technology with the Smartphone features many consumers expect, such as the ability to surf the internet or snap a photo.

But don’t stop with function. In our connected age, the term “wearable” signifies the undeniable relation between utility and appearance, media and communications that are inescapably part of our being. Temporary tattoos that can monitor pregnancy, a cocktail ring that tells you when the phone buried in your purse is ringing, even a hoodie sweater that can send text messages—these are the products that will become innate parts of the ever-evolving definition of “being connected.” Even Clairemont has gotten in on the action — or at least close to it — by working last year with 10 for Humanity to introduce the Tiger Eye Security Sensor, jewelry that is designed to help prevent violent crimes. Thus, wearable technology will continue to blur the line between technology as a tool and tech as a fashion.

The Ripple Effect for Business

The prosperity of the market for wearable technology will, however, depend on companies’ ability to appeal to customers’ fashion interests. On the flip side, style trends will become more digital, more industrial. As developers work to find a happy union between style and practicality, the question then becomes which features take precedence during design: look or utility.

For businesses, the wearable technology trend introduces the possibility to create a visual company profile through customizable products. Imagine a Smart hoodie designed for a specific organization and supplied to customers or employees. The new employee uniform could concurrently serve as the staff member’s means of communication.

The 21st Century Legwarmer

This wave of wearable technology opens the gates for tech products to shape users’ individual images. With many producers jumping on the growing trend of fitness bands, the slickest and most chic models are among the most popular. The new market for smart jewelry that provides call alerts allows women stay connected (and cutely accessorized) throughout the day without a second thought.

Take a quick memory trip back to the ’80s, the decade with legwarmer fashion and a boombox music culture. While music boxes and the loud, brightly colored style trend are often lumped together because of a similar time frame, the two are not interrelated. That won’t be the case in 80 years. A look back from year 2101 at the fashions of the mid-21st century will no doubt feature products that marry fashion with function: technology as the 21st century legwarmer.

Fashion Week Inside Scoop

Fashion Week Inside Scoop

February 12, 2014January 31, 2023 Tracy LathanBlog, Fashion, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agencyfashion, Public Relations1 Comment on Fashion Week Inside Scoop

It’s always nice to know people in high (fashion) places. My sister works for New York based designer Rebecca Taylor, so I got the chance to attend my first New York Fashion Week runway show this past weekend. A lifelong style devotee myself, I was beyond excited. And the experience did not disappoint…socialites, fashionistas, lots of black, plenty of attitude, incredible clothing and even a few celebrities. And only at fashion week would you see hundreds of women wearing open toe Louboutin stilettos teetering down streets covered in mountains of snow and ice. I loved every minute.

What I also really enjoyed was the production of the show itself. As a PR professional, I have orchestrated countless events and could relate to the sleep deprived, over-stressed girls running around. From the lighting and the music to the seating chart and the media interviews, it was evident that countless hours of planning went into executing a show of this magnitude. And although there were probably hiccups and missteps along the way, as an observer from the sidelines, it looked as though everything went off without a hitch.

And the collection itself was amazing. Rebecca Taylor is known for her feminine details, but this collection had more of an edge to it. She paired soft ice blue sweaters with more structured pieces and jackets. Lots of hardware and zipper details. And while it all looked great on the runway, it was also a very wearable collection. I already have a few things on my wish list!

Takeaways were, fashion is a true art, my sister’s job is fabulous and the same rules and challenges come into play for planning events – glamorous or not. Here is a link to all the looks from the show Rebecca Taylor Fall 2014 Runway Looks, along with a few pictures I snapped.
