What is PR? Ask Abbie’s Mom!

What is PR? Ask Abbie’s Mom!

November 2, 2015January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Oh Momma Monday, Public RelationsCAPRSA, Counselors Academy, PRSA, Public Relations1 Comment on What is PR? Ask Abbie’s Mom!

Public Relations is possibly the most misunderstood profession. If you are still wondering what people who work in PR do, go ask your mom. Better yet, ask Abbie Fink’s mom.

My dear friend and fellow PR pro wrote my favorite post about PR for the HMA blog four years ago. I still think about it when people ask me to explain my chosen career path. With Abbie’s permission, below is public relations as explained by Abbie’s mom, and you can view the original post here.

“What is…Wednesday” – What is Public Relations? My Mom’s Take

September 14, 2011 | Posted by Abbie S. Fink | Networking and Professional Development What is…Wednesday
Abbie and MomNow I know all of us in public relations have tried for our entire careers to explain what it is we do. And if you are like me, you’ve always been sure your parents really have no clue, “but as long as you’re happy, we’re happy.” Right? We were in Minneapolis for a family wedding. My 85-year-old cousin asked my mom “just exactly what does Abbie do for a living.” And this is how my mom explained it:Let’s assume you are a lettuce farmer. (The salad had just been set so it was the best she could do.) And you want everyone to know about your crops; well, you hire someone like Abbie to tell the newspaper and television reporters how great your lettuce is. But maybe you have a bad crop one year, but thanks to the work that Abbie does, she’s able to tell the reporters about that and also tell them some of the other great things you are doing at the farm.He goes on to ask, “how does she do that?”

She makes it a point to know all the reporters and editors at the different newspapers and television stations. You know she’s quite the busy-body so this is perfect for her. (yeah, I know, my mom has that part dialed in 🙂 )

So then he asks my mom if “Abbie does the Twitter thing.” And to that she says:

Yes, she does all that social media stuff. She uses the Facebook and the Twitter thing all the time (I’m sure there was a big emphasis on ALL and she probably rolled her eyes a bit as well.) She even teaches other people how to use it.

Not bad, right? So after 25+ years in business, I guess my parents really do know what I do.

About Abbie S. Fink

At Clairemont, it’s no secret that we love our clients. Meet Lindsay Rice, a new Clairemont client and owner of downtown Raleigh’s Vita Vite. Lindsay is a contemporary travel photographer, wine aficionado and art enthusiast. Her artistic process began as a child learning to value travel and cultural experiences with her family and exploring wines of the world with her mother in more recent years.

Opening soon in the Warehouse District, Vita Vite’s concept is a wine bar and art gallery featuring a variety of 20 carefully selected wines and artwork from 10 local and regional artists. The 5,600 square foot space also includes an event venue that can host intimate groups of up to 80 people. Lindsay’s vision for Vita Vite is a way to blend her two passions – fine art and wine – and create a comfortable space to help people visualize the artwork in their homes while enjoying a glass of wine.

You can like Vita Vite on Facebook to follow the construction progress and stay up to date on the grand opening and special events.

Food Festivals: Worth Your Time?

Food Festivals: Worth Your Time?

October 28, 2015January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PRchef PR, Food Festivals, food marketing, food pr, marketing at food festivals, restaurant marketing, Restaurant PR

From Melbourne to Maine, nearly every corner of the globe explores and expresses local culture through food. Culinary festivals provide a fertile arena to celebrate specific ingredients, showcase new talent or develop fresh dishes through creative chef competitions. Despite the social importance of these events, ongoing debate continues to question the marketing ROI of live events and food festivals.

Food Event Marketing: Trending or Dying?

Marketing expert Michael Reynolds, for example, argues that the trade show model belongs in a graveyard, a dinosaur in lead generation and customer cultivation. It’s easy to get lost in rows of booths hawking wares and flashing shiny tchotchkes. But festivals offer one component that most other marketing methods don’t: personal interaction. And some research suggests that live events leave a stronger imprint on the consumer psyche than social media and promotional campaigns combined.

If food festivals are such a goldmine, then why do so many brands walk away with little to show for their investments? The key lies in the master plan, the year-long prep to ensure that your restaurant gets the most bang for your buck at a culinary event.

Paint the Bigger Picture

Your annual marketing and PR plan should encompass a clear calendar of messages, themes and content, including everything from in-house events to product launches and partnerships. The food festival isn’t an isolated afterthought; it should serve as a seamless part of the overarching plan, an opportunity to aggregate messages to a specific audience at a given point in time.

You may want to introduce a new seasonal menu or recipe, but to maximize this launch, communicate with audiences prior to the event with social media teasers, e-newsletters and in-restaurant promos. Identify any influencers or media and extend a special invitation (with a creative media kit!) to visit your corner of the festival. Consider offering a special tasty treat to those that actually meet you.

Roll Out the Red Carpet

Millennials constitute a growing segment of food festival attendees, and experiences—especially elite, exclusive ones—are a valuable commodity to this demographic. Ditch the corporate talking points, step out from behind your booth and offer creative, engaging interaction. Fortunately, food is already experiential by nature. But don’t be afraid to go the extra step to debut a new flavor, provide a special interview, create a foodie photo booth, offer keepsake dishware or even solicit input for the recipe itself.

Chef Teddy Diggs, executive chef at Il Palio
Chef Teddy Diggs of Il Palio serving his famous Italian chestnut soup at the 2015 TerraVita Food Festival.

The lure may be as simple as an unexpected food. At the annual 2015 TerraVita Festival, Il Palio–a regional Italian restaurant in Chapel Hill and Clairemont client–served up something that few others did: a simple seasonal soup that stood out among other complex dishes. Simple yet delicious, the dish garnered Il Palio and Chef Teddy Diggs fame as “the chestnut soup” guy and attracted eager tasters from across the event.

Follow Beyond the Festival

A whoppin’ 95 percent of festivalgoers say they are highly likely to visit a brick-and-mortar shop after tasting a favored dish at an event. Don’t be a one-hit wonder and squander this ready-made fan base. If you’ve devised a way to collect information (or even tweets), invite your new foodie friends to attend a special dinner, enjoy a festival-only promotion or provide feedback from the tasting. Retweet, re-share, re-post and respond. You’ve wowed these foodies with your flavors; now engage them to visit you again.

Blogger Spotlight: Sarah O’Grady

Blogger Spotlight: Sarah O’Grady

October 19, 2015January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Oh Momma Monday, Social Media + Influencer Engagementescaping new york, mom blogger, PR bloggers, PR Blogging, PR blogs, sarah o'grady, top north carolina bloggers

Kvetching, the official inspiration of Sarah O’Grady’s foray into bloggerdom. After developing a sassy take on New York City, Sarah found roots in Durham and channeled her experience into her now-prominent blog, Escaping New York. Her locale might have changed, but her honest, earthy writing style has not. Here’s Sarah’s take on North Carolina life, a mash-up of creative development at Lenovo (her day job), grocery shopping snafus and “Itsy Bitsy Spider” sing-offs.

Kicking Off a Kvetching Trend

I started blogging in 2006 while living in New York City. My best friend Keren and I came up with an idea for a blog called Kvetchette; our tagline was, “We complain so you don’t have to.” We’d post about things that annoyed us about living in NY, or about work, or celebrity gossip. We took turns writing posts about things like “Umbrella Etiquette 101” and “Dear Crazy Lady in the Massive Mercedes Who Almost Ran Me Over.” It pre-dated the snarky nature of digital media today (Gawker, HuffPo, Buzzfeed) so I like to say we were blogging trendsetters in some respects! I have had a few blogs since then, and have now settled into Escaping New York – my take on life after having escaped the Big Apple Bubble.

I blog because I love making people laugh, I love knowing I can help someone who is looking for answers, and because I’ll always be a writer at heart. Despite what else is going on in my world professionally or personally, it’s my creative “release.”

Juggling Parenting and Blogging

Sarah and her husband
Sarah and her husband

Well, I juggle more than just that – I also run content and creative at Lenovo. (I am woman, hear me roar, right?!)  I write at night after the kids have gone to bed and my hubby is holed up in his own office, busy building his media empire (The Cauldron, which he recently moved to Sports Illustrated! Shameless plug, I know.) Juggling all things “life” is part of the fun. I’m a worker bee… I need to constantly be in motion, thinking, doing, creating, exploring, brainstorming.

My Inspiration: $200 Chia Seed Snacks

Sometimes, a great idea for a blog post will come to me in the most random place. Like when I’m in Whole Foods, and realize that for me, Whole Foods is an escape into a world I only dip a toe into now and then. Like pretending I’m super health-conscious about everything I put in my body, because let’s be honest, I’m not. I love a Chick-Fil-A sandwich as much as the next person. So I wrote about it later that day. I mean, I can’t be the only one who puts on her fancy hemp hat when walking in there to spend $200 on random chia seed versions of things. So that’s what I love most about blogging. Having a point of view and sharing in with the world – and hearing from other people that I made them smile because they’ve totally felt that way too.

SarahOGrady3My Down-Time Fuel

What do I when I’m not blogging? I sing a really badass version of Itsy Bitsy Spider. I save recipes to my Pinterest boards for things I’m probably not qualified to be making. I bribe my children to snuggle with me. I come up with career ideas for myself, and file them in my brain under “Some Day.” And I convince my family to pile in the car each weekend and go explore corners of the Triangle, together.

If My Kids Could Blog…

Hot topics would include Top Ten Moments My Mommy Has Tried to Capture on Instagram (But Failed) and Top Ten Things My Mommy Has Tried to Make Me Eat But I’m Not Having It.

Sarah’s Top Picks Right Now

  • The Walking Dead franchise
  • CC Skye jewelry
  • Hillary Clinton
  • Date nights in downtown Durham, which is poppin’ right now – so many amazing options!
