Tracy Lathan Receives Excellence in Mentoring Award

Tracy Lathan Receives Excellence in Mentoring Award

January 5, 2017January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsAwards, Blog, The Clairemont TeamPR, PRSA, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agency

The North Carolina Chapter of Public Relations Society of America (NCPRSA) has selected Tracy Lathan, APR, as the 2016 recipient of the Michael L. Herman Award for Excellence in Mentoring.

Lathan is an account strategist with Clairemont Communications, an award-winning, full-service public relations and marketing communications firm, and has been practicing public relations in the Triangle for more than fifteen years. In 2009, she received the Accreditation in Public Relations designation from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the profession’s only national post-graduate certification program in the field of public relations. For the past five years, Lathan has served as accreditation chair on the NCPRSA board of directors to mentor nearly a dozen other PR professionals in the Triangle to achieve this important designation.

Additionally, Lathan mentors team members at Clairemont on day-to-day account management best practices and leads regular client service lunch-and-learn sessions for the agency. She has been directly involved in developing the strategy and executing public relations programs that have earned Clairemont numerous awards for excellence in PR by NCPRSA and Raleigh Public Relations Society (RPRS). It is because of these things, as well as her previous leadership roles with RPRS, NCSU Alumni Association and the Raleigh Chamber, that NCPRSA recognized Lathan for her mentorship.

“It is a true honor to receive this award since Mike Herman was my first employer and mentor,” said Tracy Lathan, account strategist, Clairemont Communications. “Mike had a tremendous impact on so many PR professionals during his career, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share what he taught us with the next generation of practitioners.”

The Michael L. Herman Award for Excellence in Mentoring is presented to an individual who best exemplifies the ideal image of a mentor through hands-on instruction and support. It is given in memory of the late Mike Herman, APR, whose years of work and dedication to the public relations field made a lasting impression on the profession. He was inducted into the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) College of Fellows in 1998 and received PRSA’s highest individual award, the Gold Anvil for lifetime career achievement, in 2009.

Herman was a beloved mentor to both students and professionals, having served as an adjunct professor at N.C. State University, chair of the PRSA Counselors Academy and ethics chair of NCPRSA. He influenced PR professionals on a global scale, serving on the International Public Relations Association’s (IPRA) Governing Council and as keynote lecturer at the Russian Public Relations Association in Moscow and at the International Conference of Latin American Public Relations Professionals. He was also a role model in his community as an active member of his church, a Master Mason and a member of the Amran Shrine.

Give Free Thinking A Hand

Give Free Thinking A Hand

Give Free Thinking a Hand, why don’t ya!

Why do we take vacation? There are likely hundreds of answers to that question. For me, it is often time to rest, relax, recharge and clear my mind so that I can better do my job when I’m back in the office. But many times I find that when I’m traveling or taking time off at home, that’s when the ideas freely flow.

That’s why I’m sharing this as a photo of the week. A few months ago, I took my first trip to Napa with a friend. On the way to a wine tasting, we took some extra time  to explore. We were curious about other things in the area. Well let me tell you, there’s nothing like a huge hand sculpture to grab your attention while driving down the road.

How lucky we were to stumble upon the Gordon Huether Studio. We turned the car around, took pictures of the hand and other sculptures outside and then went into the studio. Once inside, I saw a connection. Could it be…? Reluctant to ask and then pleased that my instinct was right, I had seen Gordon’s work before in our very own RDU International Airport,

I believe that this kind of curiosity can help us in business when we ask ourselves what else is out there? What else can we do, see, learn, find and accomplish? Making connections — whether it is between two similar pieces of artwork or between two clients with a common goal — is a skill that all PR professionals can utilize.

So get out there! Take some time off or simply take a walk around the block and show us where you find inspiration by sharing your photos on the Clairemont Facebook page.

The New Labor Law and PR Agencies

The New Labor Law and PR Agencies

November 9, 2016January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Counselors Academy, Public RelationsCounselors Academy, federal overtime, labor law, overtime rules, PR, PR Agency, PRSA

As a member of PRSA‘s Counselors Academy executive committee, I’ve been collaborating with Tactics editor John Elsasser for several months as a liaison of sorts to secure contributors for the publication’s monthly column called “Changing Times.” The column was started by Michael Herman, APR, Fellow PRSA, friend and mentor to many. There was no one better than Mike to write about changes in the public relations industry, but his only published column appeared in January 2015, the same month he unexpectedly left this world. Since then, members of PRSA’s Counselors Academy have been contributing their thoughts on the evolution of our profession.

When John asked me if we could write about what the new federal labor law means for PR agencies, we turned to long-time friend and trusted advisor to many Counselors Academy members, Michael Lasky of Davis and Gilbert. Thanks to Michael and his colleague, Jessica Golden Cortes, for this insightful article, Pay Pals: New Federal Overtime Rules Mean Change for PR Pros.

It is exactly this kind of issue that as a PR agency owner makes me turn to Counselors Academy for guidance. Want to know more about Counselors Academy and its members? Read our previous posts here.

Dhruv’s New Bike

Dhruv’s New Bike

November 4, 2016January 31, 2023 Sarah HattmanBlog, In Our Community, Photo of the Weekadaptive bike, cerebral palsy, community, Dairy Queen, Dhruv, Green Hope Elementary School, Marketing, PR, Triangle Dairy Queen

With only one look at Dhruv’s face in the photo, you can tell he is ecstatic to debut his new bike to his classmates at Green Hope Elementary School. Seven-year-old Dhruv suffers from cerebral palsy, a condition which causes spastic muscle movements and makes it nearly impossible for him to ride a bike … that is until he won the Duet Bike from the Great Bike Giveaway.

Earlier this year, Dhruv thought he was simply riding his new bike to school, but when he arrived he realized he was in for a huge surprise.

https://clairemontcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Dhruv.m4v

This scene might not have happened if not for Andrew Valkanoff, owner and operator of Triangle Dairy Queen and a Clairemont client.

Back in March, Andrew agreed to hang fliers encouraging people to vote for Dhruv in all three Triangle Dairy Queen locations on one of the busiest days of the year – Free Cone Day. That was just the beginning. When Andrew met Dhruv in person, Dhruv’s big smile and positive attitude stole Andrew’s heart, and Andrew committed to making sure Dhruv won the adaptive bike. With the help of Facebook, Twitter and media stories, Dhruv secured the most votes … and a new bike!

To make sure the school celebration was complete. Andrew even donated ice cream to Dhruv and all of his classmates. It doesn’t get much sweeter than that!

On the Record: Goals and Productivity

June 29, 2016January 31, 2023 Sarah HattmanBlog, On the Record, Professional Developmentefficiency, NCPRSA, PR, productivity, The Efficiency Office, time management, Tracey Gritz

How often do you find yourself wishing you had more hours in the day? I’m guessing quite often, and you’re not alone. This phrase is often muttered when someone is experiencing a sense of motivation, but quickly becomes frustrated because they are over committed and do not have time to do all that they want to do.

I recently had the opportunity to hear Tracey Gritz, productivity expert and owner of the Efficient Office, speak at an NCPRSA professional development luncheon. She discussed steps you can take to regain control and spend your valuable time on the work that really matters so that you end your day feeling energized instead of drained. Let’s go On the Record to learn some helpful tips to improve your quality of life through productivity.
