Ah, Facebook.

What started as a closed social network for college students has mushroomed into one of the largest advertising and informational platforms in cyberspace. Facebook has shouldered its fair share of political drama and data breaches, and it still continues to grow, sporting everything from Karen memes to Halloween pics of the grandkids.

To Keep Or Quit?

That is the question. A maelstrom of change, is Facebook’s hotbed still a useful platform for businesses?

Facebook has seemingly squished organic reach since its algorithm shifts in 2018. Businesses have watched their organic impact dwindle along with their engagement and action rates. Given this, many have started questioning whether they should invest the time and resources to maintain a Facebook account at all.

Keep. And Here’s Why.

While Facebook may not function in the same way it did eight years ago, five years ago or two years ago, businesses still garner significant benefits from maintaining a compelling presence.

In fact, research shows that there are almost 2.75 billion monthly active users worldwide, an increase of 12 percent from 2019. In addition, approximately 1.8 billion people log onto Facebook daily — again, an increase of 12 percent year-over-year. Facebook is growing rapidly and is regularly trafficked.

1. Facebook is your business card.

The stats show that Facebook is the internet’s third-most visited website behind Google and YouTube. In essence, Facebook serves as a powerful search engine for information, much like Google. Potential customers and partners investigate the validity of your business, while job applicants explore photos, videos and posts to get a sense of your company’s culture. An active, healthy Facebook presence legitimizes your business, offers a peek into the personality and culture, and demonstrates that your company has the resources and energy to invest in two-way conversation. When they search, you need to be there.

2. You want the option to advertise (e.g. increase revenue).

While organic reach may have decreased, opportunities for paid advertising has skyrocketed on Facebook. In Q3 of 2020, Facebook ad revenues increased to $21,221 (in millions), a 22-percent increase year-over-year. In addition, average revenue per user increased from $6.95 in Q1 of 2020 to $7.05 in Q2 of 2020. That means that each person is spending more on Facebook ads, and that’s no small deal.

Targeted, intelligent ad campaigns on Facebook can not only increase sales for warm customers but also nurture cold prospects into your sales funnel. In order to tap into this goldmine, you have to have a Facebook business account. Another reason to keep yours up and running strong!

3. The conversation is happening … with or without you.

We recently worked with a client that addressed accusations against its business. And guess where this conversation jumpstarted? Yup, on Facebook. Had this business not had an active, listening account on Facebook, it would have missed this crisis altogether and likely not been able to correct information, offer mitigating actions and make things right. Conversations by customers and partners will occur whether you’re on Facebook or not. So why not be present to be a part of the conversation?

It’s not time to ditch Facebook … yet.

Strategies have changed from relying solely on organic content to crafting targeted ads and investing in interest-based groups. But your business has to be on Facebook to even be a part of these conversations — opportunities you don’t want to miss.

During fall 2018 High Point Furniture Market, furniture manufacturer Theodore Alexander in collaboration with Charles, 9th Earl Spencer – the brother of Princess Diana – unveiled the newest masterpieces in the Althorp Living History furniture collection.

This collection encapsulates reproductions from the Althorp Estate, the Spencer family’s ancestral home of 19 generations of British nobility. After the unveiling, Theodore Alexander hosted a dinner and silent auction supporting Whole Child International (WCI),a nonprofit founded by Countess Karen Spencer, Lord Spencer’s wife, to increase quality childcare around the world. Clairemont Communications was selected to help plan and execute a successful furniture unveiling and fundraiser gala during Market.

STRATEGY

Clairemont established an event strategy targeting two main audiences: local and industry media, and market guests who would attend the ticketed fundraising dinner. Clairemont’s objective was to secure exposure for the Althorp Living History line as well as to raise support for WCI, with the goals of securing at least 10 news stories featuring the furniture collection and securing gala attendance to assist with raising at least $50,000 on-site at the event to support WCI.

Clairemont crafted a campaign with pillars including media relations, social media, email marketing and experiential marketing. Since email and social media offered targeting options, we utilized Instagram and Facebook to provide sneak previews of the collection to curated guest lists, High Point Market attendees and specific demographics likely to attend. Guests and media received a VIP on-site experience as well, one brimming with a high-end dinner, gifts, champagne toasts and photo opportunities – adding to the allure to attend and support the fundraiser.

EXECUTION

Hefty primary and secondary research guided our process, including market demographics, market challenges and successes, and product sales as well as the protocol for addressing Lord Spencer. Clairemont devised a timeline and managed on-site logistics.

Clairemont’s creativity added a “royal touch” to the evening, securing record coverage and top attendance by implementing these creative elements.

  • A Royal Affair: Clairemont and Theodore Alexander created a “royal wing” of the showroom and offered reporters one-on-one interviews with Lord Spencer. Our tailored pitches invited media on a personal tour of the Althorp showroom as Lord Spencer shared tales of his and Diana’s memories of each piece.
  • The Gallant Gala: The tour with Lord Spencer culminated in an evening dinner in the Theodore Alexander dining room, and Clairemont ensured that the Whole Child International story filled every nook and cranny. During the event, Lady Spencer issued a personal invitation for guests to donate, sharing her vision to reach orphanages across the globe with the funds.
  • Social Media Sneak Peaks: Ahead of the event, Clairemont worked with Theodore Alexander’s social media team to create teasing tidbits about both the Althorp Furniture collection and the Whole Child International dinner. Stunning videos, for example, unveiled a small detail or design of the coming Althorp pieces. Stories of children benefiting from Whole Child International piqued the interest of followers on social media, and of course, targeted social ads invited Market-goers to purchase a ticket to the dinner.
  • More at Market: Clairemont maximized reporters’ time at the Theodore Alexander showroom by curating the top picks from its other leading collections. Clear information and assets were neatly packaged for on-site reporters to collect after their appointment with Lord Spencer.

RESULTS

As its “crowning achievement,” Clairemont successfully implemented the unveiling and gala, exceeding all objectives. We secured 19 news stories and helped raise a total of $75,685 to support Whole Child International by the end of the evening’s event.

Vita Vite, a wine bar and art gallery in downtown Raleigh, had quickly surfaced as a local hotspot since its grand opening in 2015. With her growing customer base, owner Lindsay Rice sought to leverage Facebook as another way to engage Vita Vite’s loyal fans and invite new guests to stop in for a visit.

STRATEGY

Clairemont Communications worked with Lindsay to portray Vita Vite not just as a wine bar but ultimately as a cultural lifestyle she has so carefully crafted. Creative content showcased behind-the-scenes tours of Italian vineyards and exclusive previews of hand-crafted goods Lindsay selected for Vita Vite. Posts featured interior design suggestions for styling Vita Vite’s art as well as fashion tips, underscoring the well-rounded lifestyle that accompanied the wine bar.

EXECUTION

The Vita Vite Facebook feed showcased the ways fans enjoy Vita Vite, from highlighting Vita Vite’s pooch-friendly porch, “Sip and Sweat” exercise classes and even board games amongst friends. Behind-the-scenes staff pictures and a personal video from Lindsay teaching her fans how to pronounce “Vita Vite” fostered personal connections in an online environment. We also asked for feedback (“Which Vita Vite nook is your favorite?”) and had some fun with Vita Vite-themed personality quizzes (“Red, white or rose today?”). Facebook proffered invites to sold-out events, including an Italian-themed Sunday Supper and the Midsummer’s Party to debut a special beer made in partnership with a local brewery. Vita Vite partnered with organizations like barre3 Fitness Studio and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance for social media takeovers to increase visibility along with advertised posts. Through Facebook, audiences experience a virtual lifestyle of international travel and global tastes from their own Raleigh homes.

RESULTS

As a result, Vita Vite’s Facebook followership increased by 42 percent and engagement rose by 1.5 percent; this was a particularly notable byproduct since average Facebook engagement decreased by 20 percent in 2017 across all industries. In addition, Vita Vite reported a successful year and a full schedule of sold-out events. Vita Vite also secured awards like “Best Place to Get a Glass of Wine” and “Best Girls’ Night Out Spot,” and owner Lindsay earned the Top 40 Under 40 and Women in Business awards from the Triangle Business Journal.

There are 32 teams in the NFL across 21 states. Super Bowl XLIX, New England Patriots versus Seattle Seahawks, was the most-watched Super Bowl and most-watched television program of all time with a staggering 114.4 million American viewers. This past season, 103.4 million American viewers tuned in for Super Bowl LI, Patriots versus Atlanta Falcons. You could say professional football is a pretty big deal.

The various football teams have a lot of work to do on the field, and their communication teams have a lot to do off of it. Each team has to connect with thousands of fans, and one great tool to do this is social media. Any given team will be using social to post game results, questions to fans, information on players, news about the team, the game schedule, merchandise and more. That being said, we’ve ranked the top five NFL teams who we think have done a stellar job with their social media.

1. Dallas Cowboys

The Numbers:

The Cowboys have 3.75 million followers on Twitter, 2.6 million followers on Instagram and 8.6 million likes on Facebook.

Why We Love Them:

We love that, like most teams, the Cowboys share player interviews and highlights, but the team stands out in the way it uses social media to focus on the team as a whole and the friendship between players. We also love the shoutouts the Cowboys give the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, who have 393,000 Instagram followers of their own.

The Cowboys do a great job of utilizing Instagram stories, including highlights of wallpapers, captains, events and the season schedule. Most importantly, this team makes its social media shine by never missing a birthday shoutout to the players and well wishes to fans on holidays. 

2. Carolina Panthers

The Numbers:

The Carolina Panthers have 3.01 million followers on Twitter, 1.5 million followers on Instagram and 2.3 million likes on Facebook.

Why We Love Them:

The Panthers might have the most clever and humorous social media in the NFL. Expect to see a gif blowing off a big loss or the Panthers hitting another team with lighthearted jabs on Twitter. The Panthers are also in tune with younger fans and pop culture, recently turning Ariana Grande’s hit song “Thank u, next” into a hilarious meme and sharing the Panthers players you can play in the popular video game, Fortnite.

The Panthers can also be serious. We appreciated the team’s post in solidarity with Pittsburgh after the recent shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue.

In addition to staying on top of current events, the Panthers love showing off their players off the field, their fans and their city, Charlotte, North Carolina.

We’ve also got to hand it to Sir Purr, the official mascot of the Carolina Panthers, who boasts 17,900 followers on Instagram.

3. Minnesota Vikings

The Numbers:

The Minnesota Vikings have 1.26 million followers on Twitter, 769,000 followers on Instagram and 2.1 million likes on Facebook. The Vikings have a Facebook show, The Rundown, but with a pretty small following of just 1,700 followers.

Why We Love Them:

So! Much! Purple! The team colors of purple and gold jump out at you on the Vikings’ social media but especially on Instagram where uniforms, crowds of fans and tinted cartoons make a wave of purple. This team gets fans pumped for upcoming games by putting the Vikings’ cleats up against their opposition’s footwear.

We also love the way the Vikings get their fans involved with #purplepups.

4. New York Giants

The Numbers:

The Giants have 1.8 million followers on Twitter, 1.7 million followers on Instagram and almost 4 million likes on Facebook. The Giants also have a show on Facebook, called Giants Life, that has 4,000 followers.

Why We Love Them:

The Giants do so much community service and giving that there’s an account dedicated just to community relations! We love that the main Giants’ Twitter does a great job of retweeting highlights and sharing those moments with a larger Giants’ audience.

Like the Vikings, the Giants get fans involved with #NYGiantsPup, which has been used on almost 900 posts this season. Where the Giants stand out are their fun and flavorful posts sharing healthy tailgate recipes, which are done in partnership with Weight Watchers.

5. Buffalo Bills

The Numbers:

The Buffalo Bills have 965,000 followers on Twitter, 472,000 followers on Instagram and more than 890,000 likes on Facebook. The Bills also have a Facebook show with 17,000 followers.

Why We Love Them:

The Buffalo Bills prove that the number of followers you have doesn’t always equate to the originality of your posts. We love the Fun Fact Friday posts the Bills have been doing to highlight players and make them relatable to fans.

We also love how the personal lives of the players are shared on the team page, including interviews with the wives and kids of players.

Loyal football fans get excited about the uniform their team wears. This team shows its social media finesse by sharing what combination of pants, jerseys, gloves and socks the Bills will be wearing at their next away game.

Overall, the Bills are great about connecting with fans and are giving them a look behind the scenes.

Should You Buy Followers?

We’ve all done it. You post fresh content, respond to comments and employ a good balance of organic and paid exposure, but it seems like your social media following is growing at a snail’s pace.

Growing your social media can cause headaches and take an amount of effort and time that you feel like you may not have. You’ve heard that some accounts pay to boost their followers and, at this point, it seems like a creative solution to your problem, right? Unfortunately, like all things too-good-to-be-true, that notion is a little misguided.

Buying social media followers can have more consequences than just taking a large bite out of your budget.

1) It can damage your brand reputation. While buying followers can seem harmless at first, once real followers discover that your profile numbers have been padded, they may feel as if you are no longer credible. Once your brand suffers a negative reputation, it can be difficult to regain your customers’ trust.

2) You won’t get the engagement you need. With thousands of “bot” accounts (accounts created for users that don’t exist, copycat accounts or hacked accounts), you won’t be getting the true engagement that you need for social media success. Sure, you may be paying for hundreds of likes and retweets, but when you post content, the consumer is more than likely one of your fake followers. That doesn’t help get your message out there or grow your business.

3) It can be expensive. If you still want to risk it, think about how much money you’ll be paying to potentially damage your reputation and acquire hollow engagement. Most companies that provide these follower accounts charge in bulk for followers, likes and retweets. It could cost you anywhere from $50 to a few thousand dollars regularly.

4) It often violates platforms’ terms of use. If you still think that buying followers on social media is a good idea, think about this: it violates many of the top platforms’ terms of use, including Twitter and Instagram. While it’s not illegal, your account could be suspended or even removed.

It may seem like your account will take forever to gain a hefty following, but by uploading and sharing quality content strategically, you can grow your social media accounts. Try working in some hashtag magic or become acquainted with Instagram’s new algorithm to start.
