Green Thought Thursday: Give What You’ve Got!

January 26, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainabilityeco-friendly ideas, green ideas, O, save time and money, the Oprah Magazine1 Comment on Green Thought Thursday: Give What You’ve Got!

This Green Thought Thursday, our intern Margot Horgan was feeling inspired by an article she saw in O, The Oprah Magazine.

We love Oprah because she's always got an idea up her sleeve (or two or three...)!

Whether you have excess time or money (or both) to spend, it’s easy to find new ways to add eco-friendly habits and products to your daily routine. The most recent edition of O, The Oprah Magazine features an easy-to-read diagram about how you can be more green—and save more green! Here’s the breakdown:

Do you want to invest in a one-time project?  Here’s a shortened list of the simple projects you can do at home depending on if you want to spend time or money:

Have some time for the environment? How much?
  • Five Minutes: Try resetting the schedule of your sprinkler system so you water your lawn in the early morning or late evening. As much as 30 percent of the water is lost to evaporation when you water in the daytime hours. By simply switching the time of day that you water, you can save around 126 gallons of water each week!
  • A Half Hour: Older toilets use as much as seven gallons of water with every flush, while less than a gallon would get the job done. Make your toilet more water conservative with this little trick. Fill a plastic bottle with water and a little bit of sand and submerge it in the tank for a DIY low flow toilet.
  • An Afternoon-Visit the U.S. Department of Energy’s website (energysavers.gov) and follow the step-by-step instructions on how to conduct a home energy assessment. Tasks such as lowing the hot water heater to 120 degrees can you save water, energy and dollars.

Have some money to invest? How much?

  • $: Every year, the average American household receives 1.5 trees worth of junk mail! For just $1 you can register to block junk mail at dmachoice.org.
  •   $$: Even when electronics are switched off, if they are plugged into the wall, they are likely still using energy. What is known as phantom power can account for up to 10 percent of your electricity bill. By using special surge protectors (like Belkin’s Conserve Valet), you can cut back on your energy consumption. These nifty devices will automatically cut power to devices when they are not in use.
  • $$$: As much as 30 percent of your home’s heating and cooling energy is wasted because of windows. By investing in new blinds, you decrease the amount of energy lost and money lost.

These are just a few tips on you can a more eco-friendly 2012. Thinking about trying any of these?

Green Thought Thursday: More Uses for Old Vices

January 19, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainabilitynew uses for old vices, Real Simple Magazine, reuse old items

Once again, our intern Ashely Hurteau is jumping in to share a few more green thoughts…

We love these ideas from Real Simple Magazine!

Last week, I shared four new uses for old vices. These clever ideas from Real Simple come at the perfect time – we’re all still sticking to our New Year’s resolutions, right? This Green Thought Thursday, I’d like to share a few more ideas. They are:

  • Giving up gambling for good? Turn your poker caddy into a pen and pencil caddy. Close off the bottom with poker chips and the sides with playing cards – very appropriate!
  • Any hipster’s dream – transform old beer cans into paperweights by filling them with coins or sand and sealing the top.
  • If soda is a thing of the past, take the old bottles and turn them into an uncooked spaghetti holder. Coincidentally, they hold the perfect amount for a single serving!
  • Clean your contacts and the landfills! Use plastic bottle caps as contact lens holders. Be sure to clean them before you re-use.

Last week I vowed to re-use my wine corks for a cork board. This week I am going to suggest something that I have been doing for years. Save the funnies from the Sunday news and use them as wrapping paper. Give a gift, a laugh and one less wasted item!

As always, we would love to hear other ways you will re-use things in 2012!

Green Thought Thursday: New Uses For Old Vices

January 12, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, SustainabilityGreen, new uses for old vices, Real Simple, repurposed items1 Comment on Green Thought Thursday: New Uses For Old Vices

Today we’ll hear again from Ashely Hurteau, our fabulous new intern and fellow lover of all things green.

As we embark on 2012, many New Year’s resolutions will involve kicking bad habits. In the spirit of going green, Real Simple has shared some ways to re-use items that you might have otherwise shunned. For today’s Green Thought Thursday, we’d like to share a few of those ideas with you.

  • If you can’t kick the habit of sweets, at least kick the waste. Take old candy wrappers and use them to wrap small presents. Aren’t they adorable?
  • Clean the air and your lungs by quitting smoking. Then use your old ash trays as cute little soy sauce dishes!
  • Cutting back on TV and don’t know what to do with the remote? Remove the batteries and make it your new hide-a-key compartment or emergency cash holder!
  • Give up gambling and use the numbered cards as gift tags. They’re great for birthdays, and the Queen and King of Hearts are perfect for Valentine’s Day!

I loved these tips from Real Simple so much that I decided to come up with one of my own: as a self-proclaimed wine connoisseur, I vow to re-use the corks by collecting them to make a cork board.

So whether you do it in stiletos or boots, in 2012 make one of your resolutions to reduce your carbon footprint while kicking your vices, and stay tuned as we share more ideas from Real Simple. In the meantime, we’re kicking it over to you. Please share your ideas in the comments section.

Green Thought Thursday: New Year, New Uses for Reusable Totes

January 5, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainabilitynew uses for reusable grocery bags, other uses for reusable totes, Shop and Go Totes, Willow House2 Comments on Green Thought Thursday: New Year, New Uses for Reusable Totes
New uses for reusable totes? We've got it in the bag!

If you’re anything like me, you accumulated about a million reusable grocery bags last year. One of my favorite finds was this little gem: a Shop and Go Tote from Willow House. This stylish blue and green shopping bag can be used for much more than just shopping.

Here’s a list of new uses for this reusable tote bag (and others of its kind) straight from the Willow House website. Some of my favorites:

Tip #6: Store your hammock in a bag between uses.

Tip #8: Create a Pedicure Tote: Pack flip-flops, nail color, your own clean utensils and a magazine for the salon.

Tip #12: Package your gift in a reusable tote instead of an expensive and disposable gift bag — tie the handles together with a coordinating ribbon to make it extra special.

Tip #18: Use as library bags — give one to each family member and let them fill ’em up!

Tip #20: Use as beach bags.

Tip #36: Carry produce home from the farmer’s market.

Tip #37: Ramble in the woods and bring home pretty pinecones and branches for decorating.

And, of course, the list goes on. How about taking a look and sharing some of your favorites? I even came up with this one on my own:

Use as a doggie suitcase for Charley, complete with rawhide chews, treats, toys and food bowls.

Be sure to share your own tips, along with your favorites from the list, in the comment section below!

Green Thought Thursday: A Tree-Mendous Challenge

December 15, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, SustainabilityAmerican Tobacco Historic District, Durham, green Christmas tree decorations, green ornaments, natural holiday decorations, The Herald-Sun, Triangle Christmas Tree Challenge, Triangle Family Services

We just can’t seem to stop talking about Triangle Family Services. From the recent media successes of the Ninth Annual Gingerbread Benefit to spending time chatting with CEO Alice Lutz, the Clairemont team is always ready to jump in and help this wonderful organization, which has been serving families in crisis for nearly 75 years. And now…it’s your turn to help. I have a tree-mendous challenge for you.

In the spirit of the holiday season, Durham’s American Tobacco Historic District is sponsoring the Second Annual Triangle Christmas Tree Challenge. The organization invited more than 60 nonprofits to come out and decorate a tree in hopes of winning one of several prizes, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. In addition to the all-star judging ceremony held on Dec. 18, fans have a chance to have their say, too. Be sure to head over to www.triangletreechallenge.com to cast your vote for Triangle Family Services — tree No. 59!

And what does this have to do with Green Thought Thursday? Well, just take a look!

We love Triangle Family Services' naturally decorated tree!

Doro Taylor, an avid TFS supporter and board member, dressed the tree with natural decorations in celebration of the organization’s upcoming 75th anniversary. She wanted to use ornaments that would have been used in 1937, the year the organization was founded. The “no frills” approach, Lutz told The Herald-Sun, models Triangle Family Services’ straight-forward approach to helping families in crisis.

From pinecones to berries, I never considered the fact that a tree could be made so beautiful by simply using materials from your own backyard! Once the holiday season is over, this will certainly save a lot of old decorations from going into the landfills, and the best part? There’s no breakdown involved. It’s a mess-free Christmas tree!

So won’t you please take a moment to vote for TFS and Doro’s creativity? And be sure to share ways that you use nature decorate your home for the holidays. We’re all (elf) ears!
