RPRS Luncheon: Think Outside the Box

RPRS Luncheon: Think Outside the Box

July 12, 2018January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Professional Development, Public RelationsCreative PR, PR, Public Relations, Raleigh PR, RPRS

I had the opportunity to attend a luncheon hosted by the Raleigh Public Relations Society at the end of June. Mary Alice Holley, communications and marketing director, Conservation Trust for North Carolina (CTNC), spoke on strategies she used to build relationships and awareness. I had a hard time thinking that strategies for land and water conservation also apply to outside fields, but there’s actually substantial overlap.

The biggest takeaway? (I mean, besides that 18 Seaboard, the venue for the June meeting, has show-stopping crème brûlée.) If you think outside the box and use creative PR, it could make all the difference.

Think of a New Audience

One of the first things anyone in PR will do when developing a strategy is to determine the target audience. Holley recommends thinking of a new or unconventional audience. For the CTNC this meant not only targeting politicians and land owners but also “people who go to community gardens and walk trails.”

Anticipate Obstacles

Holley explained that, upon receiving her director position, many of the existing staff believed that developing communications strategies on the grassroots level was a waste of time. They wanted to go straight to the politicians, but Holley knew that bringing awareness would help the CTNC gain momentum. It’s a good thing she kept moving forward with her ideas! Since Holley became director, the CTNC has secured a record number of email subscribers, followers and donations.

Activate the Plan

Holley stresses the importance exploring different messages and channels beyond the tried-and-true to reach your audience. For the CTNC Holley has implemented a strategy that involves letters to the editor, op-eds, field trips and traditional media. The CTNC uses action alerts that pique audience interest, increase awareness of the organization and gather emails.

Make Your Efforts Last

It’s vital to maintain the interest of your current supporters and not only focus on the attention of fresh eyes or ears. Online content like a website or blog, fact sheets, media relations and events have all been used by the CTNC to keep interest and further inform its audiences. Holley also highly recommends taking the time to thank those that have supported you. The CTNC has officially thanked politicians that have voted for land and water conservation legislation.  Not only does this make supporters and advocates feel valued but it also helps to nurture a champion for your cause or organization.

What are some varied communication strategies you’ve seen or used? Here at Clairemont, we’re always conjuring up creative ideas for our clients. Drop us a line if you need some pizazz!

Meet Yasmine, Clairemont Intern

Meet Yasmine, Clairemont Intern

May 22, 2018January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Professional Development, The Clairemont Teamclairemont intern, NCSU, Public Relations, the clairemont team

When I was a child, I was an avid reader. The first book I ever read on my own was a selection from my extensive Winnie the Pooh collection. After that, I picked up a love of books and haven’t let it go since. Maybe that’s why PR was such an obvious fit; I love people’s stories.

Meet Yasmine

I was named after my great-grandmother whom I was never able to meet. My name is Yasmine Evans, and I’m what you might call a pioneer for my family. I’m the first in my immediate family to go to college. There’s a lot riding on my academic success, but thankfully, I have that love of books to keep me going. I’m a rising senior at NC State University (go Pack!) and major in communications with a concentration in public relations. I also minor in Japanese language, which tells you that I have an eclectic range of interests. I really love skincare and marry that passion with my love of Japanese and Korean culture. My shelves at home are full of products from overseas.

Where It All Started

Because of my love for people’s lives and the stories that are connected to them, I considered journalism while I was in high school. Once entering college, I discovered public relations and wanted to know more. A professor once told me that PR is storytelling. You tell the world your clients’ stories. As someone in public relations, you garner the right attention, you inform and you bring new ideas to the table every day. I knew that was what I wanted to do.

Clairemont

I was excited when I heard from the team that they wanted me to intern for them this summer. I knew that I would learn so much from these talented professionals and would have fun doing it. The Clairemont House, home to Clairemont Communications,  is an inspiring story in itself—a well-designed space with old charm and modern flair. The small team enables me to participate and learn from many different projects and assignments. We’re truly a team here! I hope to bring my passion for writing and people to Clairemont, and I hope to become our clients’ master storyteller.

Networking on Social Media

Networking on Social Media

March 15, 2018January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Professional Development, Social Media + Influencer Engagementnetworking, Networking tips, Social Media, social media networking, social networking

Most of us have swapped business cards at a networking event or connected with our fair share of people on LinkedIn. Both are so common in 2018 that one must look beyond the traditional outlets to forge and maximize professional associations.

Two words: social media.

How can one network on social media? Which begs another question: why should one network on social media? Statista.com gives us 2.46 billion reasons. According to Statista’s research from more than 18,000 sources, there were 2.46 billion social media users across the globe in 2017. And Statista’s projections for the next five years? Add at least another 500 million users to the number. In contrast, LinkedIn has less than 500 million users. With that amount of people available across the web, why wouldn’t you want to network on social media? Here are a few tips to get you started.

Twitter

Engage in Twitter chats: Check out this list of Twitter chats with numerous topics, dates and times. Twitter chats open the door to talk to thousands of people all over the world.
Create tweets that create conversation: Rather than making statements, craft tweets that include questions and prompt replies from your followers. And, no brainer, reply to those tweets you follow as well.
Follow people with whom you want to connect: If you have targeted professionals in mind , follow them on Twitter and engage with their tweets. Be sincere. Forbes shares a story about a woman who used Twitter to connect with the editor of a publication, hoping to get her work published. Her networking paid off as her writing was published and even retweeted by the editor.
#DotheHashtagThing: Whether you’re looking for similar accounts to follow or trends and current events, Twitter hashtags have you covered. Searching even the most basic hashtag will introduce you to new professionals in your industry, like-minded colleagues, potential mentors, media and thousands of related tweets internationally. Consider creating your own hashtag, something as simple as the abbreviation of your company or a tagline for your company. Of course, research your hashtag first.

Instagram

Utilize Instagram Direct Messaging to create a “pod:” Connect with similar accounts through hashtags and the Explore page on Instagram. Create a group message, or what is commonly known as an Instagram “pod,” with these accounts to share content and stay in contact on a regular basis. You can also use these pods to swap ideas, ask advice, questions and invite others to events.
#Utilize #hashtags: Similar to using hashtags for Twitter, utilizing hashtags on Instagram helps you find specific content and accounts on Instagram.

Facebook

Post job-related content: Post and share content on Facebook that will allow your friends to engage and relate. Making this content related to work will draw and maintain a professional presence — a point of reference for contacts.
Use Facebook to market yourself: Share content of your own on Facebook. This might include your published work or a past project. Utilize your platform to showcase your experience and talents with friends and those you consider professional contacts.
Create or join Facebook groups with other professionals: Similar to an Instagram pod, create or join a Facebook group with your professional contacts on Facebook. Use this platform to share relevant material related to your profession, share your own writing and work, and engage with your fellow professionals’ work on a regular basis.

Growing your professional presence on social media doesn’t stop here. Check out our blog post on branding yourself across all of your favorite social platforms.

A New Year, A New Kind of “U”

A New Year, A New Kind of “U”

December 8, 2017January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Clairemont Client News, Professional Developmenthigher education marketing, new years resolutions, university marketing, WGU NC, WGU scholarship

Run a 5k. Eat more spinach. Organize the garage. Call mom every Thursday.

New Year’s resolutions target every niche of our physical and social lives. And sadly, 80 percent of us ditch our resolutions by February. Too hard. Lack of support. Oreos just taste that good.

So what makes a resolution “sticky”? Specific goals, measurable progress, accountability and sometimes, just getting started is all it takes. And isn’t it delightful when the first step is easy — especially for long-term goals, such as finishing your degree?

A Doable Resolution

Western Governors University North Carolina (WGU NC) has paved the way for fellow North Carolineans to successfully pursue higher education in the new year. As the oldest and largest online university in the country, WGU serves working adults with an online competency model — meaning you can quickly test out of courses once you have mastered the skills. Classes can be taken at any time, from any location, allowing working adults, traveling professionals and busy parents alike to complete coursework based on their own schedules. How about this military veteran who finished her degree while still serving in Iraq?

Paving the Way: Scholarships

To usher in 2018, WGU NC, a Clairemont client, rolled out two scholarships for North Carolina residents!

1. WGU’s North Carolina Take Flight Scholarship offers a total of $150,000 to help adult students in North Carolina earn their degrees. North Carolina residents can pursue bachelor’s or master’s degree in high-demand fields, including IT, business, K-12 education and health professions, such as nursing. And with approximately 75 scholarships available up to $2,000 each, every student has a chance. Applications for this scholarship close December 31, 2017, just in time for the new year.

2. The WGU Salute To Veterans Scholarship provides support for those who have served in the military. Valued at up to $2,500 per student, this scholarship is applied at the rate of $625 per six-month term, which is renewable for up to four terms. Applications close January 31, 2018.

Check out what these WGU alumni have to say!

Ready to invest in your career, your family, your future? The first step has already been taken for you with WGU!
