I ordered a coffee in the airport while rushing to catch a flight. A little extra something was attached to the coffee sleeve. I glanced down and saw that it was some sort of medication. I thought it was really weird that an aspirin product was being dispensed with my morning brew. I mean, I thought it was REALLY weird.

Once in my seat, I took a closer look. “When your elbow and the beverage card are no longer on speaking terms.” Okay, now they have my attention. Still a little odd, but just maybe it is a genius marketing ploy with clever copy, a creative way to offer product sampling to a captive audience and an invitation to engage on social media using the hashtag #travelhurts.

There’s something funny about this to me. I met Jeff Tippett about seven years ago when I orchestrated a ticket giveaway on Twitter for a client. I think “community” was just becoming a social media buzzword at the time. While I’ve come to loathe its over usage, there’s not a more befitting term for how two communications professionals living in the same city met.

The tickets were for a non-profit performing arts group that many would consider a big part of our local community. I remember that night being hectic, as I went from the office to home to deliver the tickets just before the performance began. My son joined me for the ticket delivery, and we quickly met Jeff and his daughter who was about the same age as my son, before they rushed in to claim their seats.

Over the next few years, I bumped into Jeff a few times. We didn’t see each other often, but I felt like I knew him because I continued to follow him on Twitter. He was part of what I consider my first online (yes, I have to use it) community within my local community. It didn’t seem like there were that many people from Raleigh on Twitter at the time. In addition to Jeff, the early adopters as I remember it were Phil Buckley, Ginny Hamilton, Wayne Sutton and Evan Carroll.

Two or three years after the rushed ticket exchange, I had the pleasure of presenting with Jeff during a session designed to teach non-profits how to engage online communities. We met for prep, conducted the presentation and probably said we should get back together for coffee soon. Then we returned to our hectic lives as communications people.

Now, as a new kind of community has emerged, I’ve had the opportunity to reconnect with Jeff. When I learned that he was organizing a town hall style meeting to facilitate discussion about the City of Raleigh’s concerns with Airbnb, I knew it was time for me to speak out about a community that I’ve proudly become part of as an Airbnb host.

Enter new buzzwords: the sharing economy. While this term will likely become over used too, for now, it is the perfect description of how I feel about my experience with Airbnb. The extra revenue stream that comes from being a host is secondary to the pride I feel as a brand ambassador to Raleigh. In fact, because our Airbnb guest suite is in the same house that is the home of Clairemont, we’ve created a team of Raleigh brand ambassadors.

We love sharing our office house and our beautiful, vibrant, fun city with our guests. There’s nothing better than telling them to visit ArtSpace, providing a list of our favorite Raleigh downtown restaurants and suggesting that they shop like locals by going by Stitch, Nora and Nicky’s, High Cotton and Deco. And that’s exactly why I asked Jeff if I could join the panel he organized on why Airbnb is good for Raleigh, despite the fact that our zoning will likely allow us to continue to host one way or the other.

Now, I have to use the word community again. In my twelve years in Raleigh, I’ve never felt a sense of local community like I did at the town hall meeting Jeff organized. There was so much energy and passion in the room. While most attendees were in favor of the City of Raleigh allowing residents to be Airbnb hosts, one thing was certain. Everyone wanted what’s best for our city. The pride was overwhelming and is what I believe makes Raleigh such as special place to live. It is no surprise Raleigh made Airbnb’s Hospitality Index.

As a shout-out to fellow expert communicator Jeff — excellent work in organizing live and online discussion around this topic that is important to our city as we continue to be recognized as a city of innovation and creative thinkers! While our officials continue to consider the future of Airbnb in the City of Oaks, you have facilitated healthy and productive dialogue in a way that few people are successful in facilitating. I’m happy to be part of your “community,” in every aspect of the word.

This year we are bringing back our Copy Cat blog posts, a timely decision in light of all the debate sparked by the recent PRWeek article making the case for PR students no longer needing writing classes. While I agree that PR is much, much more than writing, it remains an essential element of what we do. My friend and fellow Counselors Academy member, Abbie Fink, says it well in her recent post on the HMA Public Relations blog.

As Abbie explains, the types of writing public relations professionals are asked to generate on a daily basis varies. We might switch from penning an in-depth strategy document or white paper to coming up with quippy copy for a social media post or email marketing subject line. Sometimes, the shorter the copy, the harder it is to write an effective message. That’s why most of our previous Copy Cat posts (and I suspect future ones, too) feature taglines, captions, intro copy and other snippets of writing that either make us cringe or wish we would have thought of it ourselves!

Today’s Copy Cat spotlight is on Byrdie Beauty and definitely fits into the later. Not only is it cute copy, but the writer has done something we’ve all been asked to do as PR pros, and that is to try to connect two seemingly unrelated things. How many of you communicators out there were asked to do something with the Super Bowl for your brand? It is easier for some than others. For example, our client PDQ is offering a “Super Deal for Super Sunday” with a BOGO on fresh chicken Tenders. Football and food. It is a natural fit.

But what about cosmetics? Unless you are Katy Perry’s stylist or represent one of the product brands she endorses, you might not be able to score a touchdown. (Sorry. That should make it in the Copy Cat: Terribly Corny Edition.) That’s why I love what Byrdie did with the email subject line that caught my attention: 9 Super Bowl-proof lipsticks that won’t come off on your nachos.

I like to ponder the thought process for other people’s good copy. I bet this one started with the football and food connection I already mentioned. Football…food…lips…lipstick. Do you think they got it in the first try? I bet not. Can you imagine the rejects?

It just isn’t that easy! I also think that throwing in a nacho reference when talking about all things style, beauty and fashion is just unexpected enough to be an attention-getter. That’s why I consider this copy from Byrdie to be a total score.

Last year, I had the amazing opportunity to join the cast of Listen to Your Mother: Raleigh Durham and share a story that is near and dear to my heart about my grandmother.

I’ll admit, I was nervous. Yes, I’m a PR person. Because of this, you might be inclined to say that I am a professional storyteller. However, I’m not accustomed to standing on a stage and reading a personal story. I’m also not accustomed to doing so with a group of women who are really fabulous writers and storytellers — women who started as strangers but are now friends. Sharing this experience with them created strong bonds that will never be broken, and I treasure the times we now have as a part of an ongoing writers’ group. (Writers’ group, group therapy…whatever.)

Almost everyone has a story to tell about motherhood. Listen to Your Mother 2015 will feature funny, touching, enlightening and inspiring stories about motherhood in 39 cities. This year’s Raleigh-Durham submission deadline is January, 31. If your heart is tugging at you to submit a story, I strongly encourage you to do so. Submissions are open to women and men, and you don’t have to be a mother to tell your story. To get an idea of what you’ll be doing if you are invited to audition and selected, check out videos from last year’s Raleigh-Durham show.

It seems like yesterday that I tacked Monty Hagler’s letter on my wall announcing that RLF Communications had hit that important milestone of five years in business. “Wow,” I thought, “What an accomplishment! I can’t wait to say that for Clairemont.”

When you start a company, you read all kinds of scary facts about the number of businesses that never make it to a fifth anniversary. Thankfully, the days where doubts crept in have been far outweighed by the days that my inner voice shouted, “Woohoo, we are doing this! It is really happening!”

So many things have been learned including the fact that when you start a PR agency, it is hard to determine “the” day that you become official. Was it the day we got the business license? Was it the day we signed a lease? (Buying The Clairemont House two years later trumps that, though!) Was it the day we got our first client? Because of this, we plan to celebrate all year. We’re kicking off the festivities starting today since it was five years ago today that I didn’t go to work somewhere else due to the fact that I had announced the day before that I was starting a new agency.

It was also on this day in 2010 that I first blogged as Clairemont’s CEO and promised, amongst other things, random dancing. We’ll mark this milestone by dancing for five minutes on the hour for five hours today on the Clairemont porch. If you are local, please join us. Otherwise, feel free to cut a rug from where you are, but we’ll only believe you if you send us a video we can post on our Facebook page.

We have some exciting things in the works for 2015 and our fifth anniversary. Five seems to be a magical number for us right now. Check back here for more on all that real soon. Love and hugs to everyone who has cheered us on as we’ve felt like the Little Engine That Could! xoxox –D
