Announcing Our Very First "Green Thought Thursday"

November 18, 2010January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability
Hey look! I unplugged my charger!

Grass is green. Four-leaf clovers are green. My favorite apples are green (Granny Smith for those of you keeping track). Green beans are, well…green. It seems like a lot of my favorite things are green! But it sort of goes beyond that – green is more than just my favorite color. It’s a way of life for me.

If you read our blog recently, then you probably read a little bit about my experiences in working with environmental nonprofits last year in Asheville through the AmeriCorps Project Conserve program. It was there that I learned a lot about the environmental issues affecting not only the mountainous region of our great state, but of the whole country. Thankfully, I also learned lots of ways that we can minimize our personal impact. Every Thursday on this blog, I am going to start sharing some of these “thoughts” with you – little tips on living a little greener each and every single day — what I’d like to call Clairemont’s “Green Thought Thursdays.”

So why don’t we stop beating around our proverbial little green bush and kick start it off with our very first official Green Thought –

#1: Unplug your computer/phone chargers when not in use!

There’s no denying that most folks have computers and cell phones these days, and subsequently, there’s no denying that most folks also have computer chargers and phone chargers, too. But what most folks might not know is that regardless of whether or not your phone or computer is plugged into its charger, that charger is still busy converting power.

Think about it this way, as blogger Tina Casey from Clean Technica put it – “The Union of Concerned Scientists has estimated that energy vampires such as chargers and electronic devices in standby mode waste about 5% of household energy use in the U.S. That translates into about 65 billion kilowatt hours of wasted electricity per year, and chargers are the biggest culprits.”

The Union of Concerned Scientists also stated that the power being wasted by things like phone chargers and computers chargers is costing consumers more than $5.8 billion annually and is sending more than 87 billion pounds of heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. Yikes.

So next time you’re finished charging your phone or computer, how about unplugging it? It’s the green thing to do!

Doing Our Best at Doing Our Part

November 2, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Starting a business, SustainabilitySustainability3 Comments on Doing Our Best at Doing Our Part
Josie rides her bike to work!

My son has a little sing-songy expression that he sometimes uses when he’s working through a task: “Doin’ my best, just doin’ my best.” I think it is a good motto for most anything, and especially for individuals and companies trying to live a greener life.

When I launched Clairemont, I knew that I wanted our agency to be sustainably aware, and that I wanted to work with sustainable clients. Being green is largely about taking baby steps. I selected office space downtown Raleigh so that hopefully some employees could travel to and from the office without getting in a car (which has become a reality!) and so that we are in walking distance of lunch spots (our faves buy from local farmers), the bank, the post office, etc. to minimize during-the-day driving.

Upon opening the office, we’ve found other small ways to do our part including the implementation of a reusable cup policy, participation in our building’s recycling program and printing on carefully selected recycled paper only when printing is a must!

When Josie joined Clairemont, I gave her an extra title of Clairemont’s Green Ambassador. The fact that the way she lives her personal life demonstrates that she loves her Mother Earth warmed my heart during her interviews. From a professional perspective, I knew her experience of living in Asheville serving in the AmeriCorps Project Conserve with a focus on conservation issues in North Carolina’s mountainous region would be a great asset to Clairemont clients.

In the coming weeks, our Queen of Green will be sharing sustainable tips here on our blog. As we also continually seek ideas on how to protect the environment, please send us your thoughts so that we can keep on doing our best… just doing our best.

More Earth Day Goodness

April 22, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Sustainability

Today is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. For Clairemont, Earth Day resulted in all kinds of goodness!

Since the beginning of the year and the first week Clairemont opened, we’ve been planning for Earth Day activities at Briar Chapel by Newland Communities which included a celebrity chef charity event that benefited The Abundance Foundation and the National Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition to getting to work with smart, creative and nice clients at Briar Chapel, we had the pleasure of getting to know the chefs, managers and owners at Busy Bee Cafe, Irregardless Cafe and Carolina Inn. As a result, we improved our connections for insider information on some of the best food in the Triangle and made some great new friends.

Here we are with our clients after the events. We were all tired, but I couldn\’t resist the opportunity to say VOILA! reflecting on our success!

Earth Day Goodness – Part 3

April 19, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, In Our Community, SustainabilityBriar Chapel, Earth Day, Irregardless Cafe

In working with Clairemont client, Briar Chapel, I recently had the great honor of interviewing Chef Arthur Gordon of Irregardless Cafe. As you will learn from the Q&A below, Arthur pioneered cooking with local ingredients and supporting area farmers in Raleigh. I love his food, and I think he would be as equally as successful at the comedy club next door to the cafe!

1. What’s it like to be the chef at Irregardless Café? In French, the word chef means chief, so it’s a real pleasure to be the chief, the head, the operating honcho of a group of people who are like-minded. I like to think that Irregardless Café is an oasis in Raleigh – no TV, live music, fresh food – and to be able to provide this to the community at large is a real honor. This concept is the vision I had 35 years ago, when I began Irregardless, and it’s a real blessing to see it realized.
2. When did you know you wanted to be a chef? From an early age. When my mom and dad got married, my mom said to him, “I’m going to be good in one room in this house, you pick it.” So, as a dysfunctional family, I learned how to cook. Dad was happy, and I learned to cook. French toast was my forte. We grew up in Durham, and we owned a ladies dress shop, where dad bought the clothes and mom sold them. You see the room dad picked was actually the dress shop – see, it wasn’t what you were thinking.
3. Where did you start your career as a full-time chef? In 1972, I graduated from UNC, and I wrote to the Culinary Institute of America, the CIA, about coming to be trained as a professional chef. They wanted everyone to have at least one year of experience first, so I thought I’d open a restaurant for a year or two. Well, I haven’t gotten to cooking school yet. I started here in 1974. I built the building by converting it from a laundry into a restaurant, and I just kept expanding over the years. In 1994, we had a fire, so when I rebuilt, I made the kitchen as large as the dining room. I figured if I was going to spend my life in that kitchen, I would make it big, and it’s worked out well. It’s allowed us to be able to have a catering business, and not bog down the kitchen that’s also serving the dining room. Continue reading “Earth Day Goodness – Part 3”

Green Day

April 12, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Fashion, Sustainability

In keeping with the Earth Day theme of recent posts, Friday was certainly a green day! I got to visit with Clairemont client and maker of organic, Cotton of the Carolinas (local cotton if you are in NC!) and recycled tees (because every soda bottle deserves a second chance!), TS Designs, and meet Jeanne from The Green Samaritan which is an amazing resource of eco information. Then I stopped by Weaver Street Market, and NOW I know first hand what all the fuss is about! And wouldn’t you know it, they were selling shirts by TS Designs!

Don’t forget to love your Mother Earth! –Dana
