Friday Five: Mother’s Day Edition

Friday Five: Mother’s Day Edition

May 8, 2015January 31, 2023 Sarah HattmanBlog, Free AdviceChildhood, crafts, DIY, Mothers Day, mothers day gifts, Sleep remedies

Mother’s Day is less than 48 hours away, which means there is not much time left to find a gift that lets your mom know just how much you love and appreciate her. It’s the one day of the year set aside to show her gratitude for all she does, and finding that perfect gift can be tough – especially if you are looking to find something other than the standard flowers or candy. Yes, it might sound a little daunting or even down right worrisome given the time crunch, but fret not, here are five ideas that are sure to hit the mark.

Special Memory from Your Childhood

Does your mom have mementos from your childhood? I am guessing she probably does. Perhaps there’s a picture of a younger version of you helping her in the kitchen or the two of you on a family vacation. Whatever the photo, have it framed so your mom can display it in a prominent area of her home and be reminded of the happy memory often.

Hobby Goodies

Moms spend much of their time taking care of everyone else, but this doesn’t mean they don’t have other interests. Does she play a sport, spend her free time in the garden or have a passion for reading? A great way to encourage her to take time for herself – other than just on Mother’s Day – is to stock a basket full of goodies that reflects to your mom’s hobbies or interests.

Creative Cards

Skip the store-bought card, and send her a sweet message that comes with a sweet treat. Real Simple offers six fantastic ideas to help you design a card or craft that is sure to melt her heart and possibly curb a craving.

A Good Night’s Sleep

Chances are your mom stayed up many nights to take care of you. Now you can thank her by creating a homemade good night’s sleep kit.  The internet is full of recipes for lemon, lavender, peppermint and chamomile teas to help her relax and drift on into dream land. But why stop there? Natural Living Ideas offers seven DIY ideas for a perfect night’s sleep.

Journal

This gift is recommended for the sentimental mom. It will allow her to express her feelings and encourage her to take time to reflect. You can take it to the next level by writing the first entry that captures on one or two of your happiest moments with her.

What have you done for your mom that has been meaningful to her?

Friday Five: Must-Have Apps, Supplies

Friday Five: Must-Have Apps, Supplies

March 27, 2015January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Free AdviceApple, Carolina Pad, iTunes, mobile apps, Skype, stationary, Walgreens

In honor of our fifth anniversary, we are doing lots of lists of fives. Since I’ve been traveling lately, my list today consists of things that are essential to being productive and keeping sane while on the road.

  1. RunKeeper was the first smart phone app I ever download it. It helped me train for a marathon in 2009 and a half marathon earlier this year. I love it at home, and it is especially useful on the road when I need to keep training but don’t have the ability to map out running routes in advance.
  2. Got to have my tunes. While Pandora is great for background music, iTunes is still my go-to for when I am wanting to get focused on my workout, plug in the headphones and decompress on a flight or for when I want to get my dance on at the end of a long day. Perhaps I’m a tad particular about my tunes. I want them to sound good even when I am away from home. The Bose Soundlink speaker provides excellent sound, is compact enough to add to my carry-on bag and is just cute as a button.

  3. Skype on my phone. Yes, I can video conference back to the office. More importantly, I can see my boy’s sweet face when I’m having a travel-induced bout of missing him dearly. Also, since he still doesn’t have his own phone, Skype allows us to text when he might already be on a video call with his buddies.
  4. Notes on my iPhone is a particularly handy tool for things like having Siri type this blog post as I’m driving, providing a mobile to-do list and allowing me to capture funny quotes as I hear them. Notes can be shared via text and email, so longer content converts easily when needed.
  5. However, there is still nothing like a real notebook. I love paper. I love cute notebooks. I love a lot of products from Carolina Pad, and I along with the other members of the Clairemont team are particularly obsessed with this particular notebook. I love it in Clairemont pink, and we also have it in blue and green. Every time I’m in Walgreens I stock up on these knowing that they are a Clairemont favorite. It fits perfectly in my bag with my MacBook and never runs out of battery power.

Can I get a high-five for staying productive while on the go? What are your favorite productivity tools, apps and products that get you through your day?

Friday Five: 36 Hours in Raleigh

Friday Five: 36 Hours in Raleigh

March 20, 2015January 31, 2023 Tracy LathanBlog, Free Advice, In Our Community, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PRdowntown Raleigh, Restaurant PR

As you may recall, last March the NY Times ran an outstanding piece highlighting our beloved City of Oaks titled, 36 Hours in Raleigh. N.C. The article featured some the local restaurants, shops and museums that have helped put Raleigh on the map in recent years.

I’ve lived in Raleigh for almost twenty years now (wow time flies), so needless to say I have seen how much our great city has changed for the better. The growth has been steady, strong and smart. I have always lived and worked close to downtown, so keeping up with what new restaurants and businesses are opening and thriving has become a personal passion for me.

A few weeks ago, my college roommate came to visit for the weekend. When she left Raleigh in 2001, there were only a handful of good restaurant options and downtown certainly was not the destination it is today. My husband graciously offered to take the kids out of town for the weekend, so I had the chance to serve as tour guide and show my dear friend how things have changed in a “36 Hours in Raleigh” of our own. So, for today’s Friday Five, here are a few of the spots we visited along the way.

Friday Night – 8:00 p.m.

For dinner on Friday night I chose one of my favorite spots downtown, Poole’s Diner. Time after time Poole’s does not disappoint. My husband and dine here often and always prefer sitting at the bar, which helps trying to get a seat on a busy weekend night. The vibe, cocktails and menu are consistently good. We choose a few menu items to share and it was perfection.

We also had the most wonderful chocolate dessert at Poole’s made with Videri chocolate from the local chocolate factory in the Raleigh Depot. Videri is BYOB and has a great patio, so it’s a perfect spot to enjoy one last glass of wine and some delicious chocolate before heading home. They also offer factory tours and serve up Stumptown coffee if you are in the neighborhood have a chance to stop by in the morning. The owners, Sam and Starr Ratto, have really created something special.

Saturday Afternoon – 2:00 p.m.

We spent the afternoon on Saturday shopping, and since we both have young children, we had to stop in one of my favorite children’s boutiques in Five Points, Progeny Shoppe. Store owner, Lauren Hood, has created a curated collection of modern, hip clothing, accessories and toys for little ones. The store is delightful and it’s almost impossible to walk out empty handed!

Saturday Night – 6:30 pm

For dinner Saturday night I decided on another favorite of mine, Bida Manda. We started with a moscow mule and shared the lettuce wrap appetizer. The service is always fantastic, and the décor creates a warm atmosphere that draws you in off the street. A creature of habit, I always get the Pad Tai and am never disappointed.

Sunday Morning – 8:00 a.m.

I couldn’t think of a better way to end our weekend than with breakfast at Joule. Joule has quickly become my hands down favorite spot for leisurely weekend brunch, or for a quick breakfast during the week. I love the coffee, the hipster vibe, the vibrant décor and the community table. Obsessed with the grits and sourdough toast with avocado…what a great addition to downtown!

These are only a few of the spots we visited during our weekend tour – there were so many more we didn’t have time for. I was proud to see what Raleigh has become through her eyes. What also became clear along the way is that Raleigh has achieved the best of both world’s…home to an amazingly talented group of chefs, small business owners and entrepreneurs, Raleigh has maintained a local, organic, laid back feel. Nothing fancy, just good people, good times and really good food.

Friday Five: 5 Office Faves

Friday Five: 5 Office Faves

February 27, 2015January 31, 2023 Cherith AndesBlog, Free Advice, The Clairemont Teamoffice trends, PR Agency, productivity, staying productive

Since 2015 marks Clairemont’s fifth anniversary, we’re doing several lists of “fives.” It’s no lie that the Clairemont crew loves to travel; some favorite client trips include recent visits to Austin to Tampa. But since the life of a PR rep includes a fair number of days in office, I’ve curated a list of five tools that fuel my time while I’m at the Clairemont House.

1. Something Hot, Something Cold
Coffee and NalgeneWho knew that dehydration negatively affects concentration? I stay armed with a Nalgene of chilled water and a steaming cup of java—sometimes Starbucks, sometimes whatever is left over from yesterday’s coffee pot. (Don’t judge.)

2. Vitamin C for the Brain
Stephen King captured it best: “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.” Yes, PR professionals—and Bookscommunicators in general—should regularly invest time exploring the written word. However, for afternoon slumps or mental blocks, I’ll reach for a book, a magazine, a Far Side comic—anything to introduce a fresh flow of ideas. Nationally renowned publications such as The Wall Street Journal command a distinctive cadence that I find helpful to jump-start my thoughts. I’ve perused everything from poetry (a friend of mine swears that poetry is like jumping jacks for the brain) to the back of a Cheerios box. And it works.

3. Evernote

Evernote ImageWhile the market peddles a plethora of organizational software, I’ve found a friend in Evernote, Apple’s note-taking application. Dubbed as “the workspace for your life’s work,” Evernote provides a user-friendly system for recording, curating, organizing and accessing data—from lists and tables to videos and sound bites. The functionality allows me to keep tabs on client projects with ease.

4. Kicks
AsicsThese bad boys. Nope, they’re not aesthetically appealing, and the idea of donning sneakers with my pencil skirts gives me flashbacks to that frightful skort-and-Keds trend a la 1993. But nonetheless, a brisk walk around the block does wonders to freshen my perspective, boost energy and revitalize creativity.

5. These People
It sounds like a given, but corporate America doesn’t always afford us the luxury of a collaborative environment. Clairemont TeamStruggling with a paragraph? Searching for a fresh idea? Need a hand assembling media kits? The shared passion and investment of my colleagues offer a great resource for encouragement and inspiration. And you know what? We have a lot more fun when do it together.

Pretty simple tools, right? What tips do you have for staying productive at the office?

Listen to Your Mother Wisdom

Listen to Your Mother Wisdom

May 2, 2014January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Free Advice, In Our CommunityListen to Your Mother, LTYM, Mothers Day

If you agree with the expression “mother knows best,” you’ll want to go to the Raleigh-Durham Listen to Your Mother show on May 6 or 8. It is being held at 7:30 p.m. in Kenan Auditorium at William Peace University, and the proceeds benefit SafeChild. With 14 incredibly personal stories about motherhood, I guarantee that you’ll be inspired, entertained and so moved that you’ll find yourself thinking about the stories for days or even weeks to come.

For me, it was months. I sat in the audience last year as Listen to Your Mother made its Raleigh-Durham debut. I laughed. I cried. And eight months later, I found myself still thinking about the show. I Googled to find the deadline for submitting an essay — THAT DAY! I sat down at my desk and banged out a story. I hadn’t known for eight months that it was the one I wanted to tell, but when type filled the page, I hit send.

I am honored to have made it through the audition and to be part of a cast that consists of amazingly strong women. Walking into a room of strangers to share a personal story for our first read-through was down right intimidating. Then, something magical happened. One by one, standing in Liisa Ogburn‘s living room, each woman let down her guard and put it all out there. Instant admiration! Instant trust! Instant bonding!

While we’ve only been together a few times and haven’t even done our performance yet, I’ve learned so much from this group and experience. I think many of these lessons apply not only to life in general, but also to professional development, so I’m sharing them here.

  1. Get out of your comfort zone. Do something that scares you. Take a risk. You’ll be glad that you did.
  2. Enjoy the journey. Or don’t. This is actually a quote from Lisa Bull’s story. Accentuate the positive!
  3. Listen to your mother. And anyone else willing to tell you her story. I love what Katy Schafer said when we were being interviewed by the N&O about how our social media society really only allows for snippets. To sit down and hear an entire story and really have the opportunity to listen to it in these hectic times is a real gift.
  4. We’re all okay. Who doesn’t have insecurities? Whether it as at home or work, nobody is perfect. The good news is, we don’t have to be alone with whatever might be bothering us. Reach out and ask for help. Take a deep breathe. Phone a friend. Call your mom! Or take advice from Stephanie Lormand and turn your challenges into strengths.
  5. Tell the truth and say what you mean. Let’s face it, telling the truth is hard. You think owning up to a mistake in the office is difficult? Try telling your young daughters where your breasts went, just as Alicia Altmueller had to do after having a mastectomy.
  6. An old dog can learn new tricks. I heard a 30-someting CEO call social media crap this week and say that he’d never been on Facebook. If we don’t embrace new technologies as professionals, we’ll be left behind. And miss out on some fun! If Rebecca Lanning‘s mom can become a techie, so can you.
  7. To get what you want, you might have to get up at 4:50 a.m. Yes, that’s early. A friend once posted on Facebook, “What are you willing to do to succeed?” My favorite response was, “The better question is what am I not willing to do!” If you need motivation to reach your goals, you need to hear Betsy Martin’s story.
  8. There are many things we can’t control. Gosh, this is hard to accept.
  9. Beware of a snake in the grass…or under the sofa as Agnes Stevens will tell you. What do you do when life throws you a surprise? You deal with it. You have a problem, you figure it out or at least grab a fire poker and give it a good jab.
  10. Life is short, so don’t take it for granted. What would you do with your kids today if you were terminally ill? How will you spend your last moments with your mother? When will you get around to showing more appreciation, complaining less and enjoying each moment more. How about now?

Please come see the show to hear more about these and other beautiful stories. I might not be your mother, but this mama says to buy your tickets and go! In the meantime, what’s the best advice your mother ever gave you? Please leave your answer in the comments section.
