Mad About Margot!

May 30, 2012January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Raleigh PR AgencyRaleigh PR Agency, Social Media, UNC8 Comments on Mad About Margot!

Yesterday was a most exciting day as former Clairemont intern, Margot Horgan, officially started her professional career as Clairemont’s newest account coordinator! I think it is fair to say that each of us fell in love with Margot in about the, oh, first 5 minutes we knew her. She is a wonderful testament to all of the goodness that is taught over there in Chapel Hill at the journalism school (following in the footsteps of fellow UNC alum, our very own Josie Butler) and to the power of networking. Margot came to us after interning with Clairemont partner and digital/branding/advertising pro, Gary Towning. Thanks Gary for your professional match-making!

As our intern, Margot impressed us with her blog writing skills, social media savvy, passion for public relations, curiosity about our clients and how our agency operations, creativity and overall enthusiasm. What a great feeling to have so much confidence in making someone a full-time job offer! The members of this Raleigh PR agency are thrilled she said yes!

Margot Horgan joins Raleigh PR agency, Clairemont Communications

In the spirit of keeping our Margot Madness hoopla going for at least a couple of days (weeks? months?), we will be sharing more details about Margot in future blog posts. For now, below is her quick bio. Please join me in welcoming Margot to Clairemont and congratulate her for securing a full-time position PRIOR to graduation (yes, she’s that good) by leaving a comment for her in our comments section. Thank you!

About Margot:

Margot Horgan recently joined the Clairemont team upon completing her journalism and mass communication degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While serving as a Clairemont intern, Margot proved that the combination of her journalism classes, her previous social media internships and her event planning experience allows her to take a comprehensive view to communications campaigns.

With a personal passion for social media and a curiosity for how it works for businesses, Margot’s creative ideas are already turning into brand building and revenue generating campaigns for Clairemont’s clients. Prior to Clairemont, Margot completed an internship with NewCamp Digital at Ogilvy & Mather South, where she participated in a social media audit for LabCorp and served as a video production assistant for the Duke Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP).

As a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, Margot served as the communications and event planning volunteer for the Orange County Literacy Council and was an active mentor to her little brother Brent through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle. She is in the process of transitioning her membership in the Public Relations Student Society of America to the professional level in Public Relations Society of America.

Clairemont Shares Award-Winning Advice with Raleigh PR Group

May 29, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agencyaward entries, PR advice, PR Awards, Raleigh PR Agency, Raleigh Public Relations Society, RPRS, Sir Walter Raleigh Awards, tips, tricks
Dana strikes a pose with Eva Hornak, awards chair for RPRS, at the May luncheon.

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Raleigh Public Relations Society May luncheon, where a panel of past Sir Walter Raleigh Awards recipients shared advice on how to create award-winning entries. The group of panelists consisted of Raleigh PR agency experts including Clairemont’s very own CEO, Dana Hughens (did you know that last year, Clairemont Communications received 10 Sir Walter Raleigh Awards?).

I was excited to attend not just to hear Dana speak, but also because it was a great opportunity to jot down a few tips and tricks on how to make my own entries stand out. These are a few of my favorites:

1)   Have someone from the outside review your entry. This may mean having your client proof the entry, but someone at your agency who isn’t on the account could also work.

2)   Presentation is important. Impress the judges with your organizational skills and visual aesthetic.

3)   Write your entry early. Even though Sir Walter Raleigh Award entries aren’t due until around June, it’s a great idea to get started early. If you complete a project in February, go ahead and write the entry in February! Continue reading “Clairemont Shares Award-Winning Advice with Raleigh PR Group”

Hiring a PR Firm? Check for Sportsmanship.

May 23, 2012January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Hiring a PR Firm, Raleigh PR AgencyAgency Selection, Raleigh PR Agency4 Comments on Hiring a PR Firm? Check for Sportsmanship.

Okay, so hiring a PR agency (and getting hired) is not that simple. There are several questions you need to ask before selecting a PR firm to make sure your account team will have the right skill set, industry experience, creative chops and strategic vision that you are seeking. Last night while at my son’s sports banquet, I realized that the checklist of things I typically give folks who ask “How do I hire a PR agency?” has been missing something quite important.

If you have ever attended a sports banquet, you know that other than the five seconds during which the coach recognizes your child while you eat food from a paper plate pretending not to notice that you are dining in a room where there is typically a whole lotta sweating going on, moments of high interest — let alone inspiration — can be fleeting. Last night was certainly an exception when Greg Dale, the director of sports psychology and leadership programs for Duke Athletics at Duke University, spoke.

Quickly, I realized that sportsmanship was the word that was missing from my checklist. While Greg spoke to the parents and to our children as athletes, I couldn’t help but think about how his words apply to a PR agency team and how sportsmanship says so much about an agency’s (or any organization’s) culture. Here are my top three takeaways from Greg and how I apply them to my thinking in managing our Raleigh PR agency team at Clairemont:

  1. Don’t go to your kid’s every practice. Just like how Greg explained that it is important for a kid to have his (and I use his here since I have a son) own things and parents to have their own things, the same is true for an agency team. Let the child go to practice while you go have coffee or go to book club or do work or whatever is YOUR interest. This encourages independence. I’m NOT saying that having children and managing employees is the same thing; however, I have learned some things through parenting that apply to several types of relationships. This is one. Trust me, when your name is on the door so-to-speak, the temptation to micromanage can run high. Resist. Instead insist on an environment of trust. Trust that no one needs a supervisor constantly over her shoulder and when she does need help, she will ask.
  2. Understand your role on the bench. Did you know that Duke videos its bench throughout the season? I was so intrigued when Greg said that last night. I was more intrigued when he said they will call in younger players who have been given the privilege of a spot on the bench who then don’t appear to be engaged during the game, hang their heads or appear to not be supporting the team. By doing this things, Greg said that the player is telling everybody else that he is more important than them. Wow! How many times have I seen this, and honestly, who doesn’t know from personal experience what it feels like to be on the bench when you are so eager to show your coach, your team, the world (and yourself) that you are ready to take it to the hoop? The best thing you can do in this situation is to remember, it is not all about you. It’s about the team. As Greg told our children last night, “You can be the sail on the ship, or you can be the anchor.”
  3. Confidence comes from within. I have a little mental exercise that I have been sharing with my teams for the past couple of years that seems to help get through the stress that often comes with working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven industry such as PR. It’s called holding my own hand. Who hasn’t felt overwhelmed at the onset of a new task or really big project? I like to show my teams how I will physically clasp my hands together in front of my body while I take a deep breath and tell myself that I’ve felt this way before, and I’ve always worked through it. Greg said something similar last night that I really liked and that was to talk to yourself like you would a friend or a teammate. When he coaches, he applies the three seconds rule to making a mistake. He tells his players that after a mistake has been made, count it out for three seconds and be done with it. If you are thinking about it after that, your head isn’t where it needs to be. What would you say to a teammate? “It’s okay. You’ll make it next time. Let’s go!” Embrace that language with yourself.

Why as a prospective client should you care? You need to know that each person is trusted to do his or her job. Every person on the team needs to be capable of daily responsibilities without hand-holding from the boss, and with most agencies billing at an hourly rate, this is also the most efficient and effective use of your budget. You want to know that all members of that team are in it to win it (Randy Jackson, yo!), and that the agency management team has created a culture that nurtures confidence.

My suggestion in your agency selection: Ask to meet your entire account team before you make the selection. Keep in mind that an account coordinator might not be able to answer your strategy questions, but she can tell you how she gathers research, how she’ll compile your report, how she’ll work with your day-to-day account manager to understand her daily tasks so that you feel confident with each person and her respective role on your proposed team.

Do you lead a PR agency or corporate team that displays exceptional sportsmanship? If so, please share your best team strengthening tip in our comments section!

What is a Social Media Expert?

May 21, 2012January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Raleigh PR Agency, Social Media + Influencer EngagementCAPRSA, Raleigh PR Agency, Social Media3 Comments on What is a Social Media Expert?

As the recent co-chair of PRSA‘s Counselors Academy 2012 conference, I was closely involved with planning the content for the conference. With social media as a growing part of what PR agencies offer, I found myself in discussions with conference chair, Martin Waxman, about the social media leaders, authors and “experts” we should invite as speakers. I also found debating with other agency owners and senior management about the definition of social media expert.

This certainly isn’t a new discussion, and asking the question of what is a social media expert is sorta like asking who bakes the best cake. Like in any industry, we see self proclaimed experts popping up everyday. It isn’t hard to setup a Facebook page for a business. Once you’ve done it, does that make you a social media expert? Some say so. But how does it fit into the overall marketing strategy? Are you ready for it to be a customer service channel? How do likes relate to sales? Hmmm. Maybe not so simple. And that’s just one example.

As for the conference, we were delighted to host several speakers who are truly regarded as experts, including Marcus Sheridan. I loved hearing his story because he was a pool guy who turned to blogging to save his business in a down economy. Not only did he save the company, sales exploded and a new career as The Sales Lion was born. Similar to Chicago Cabbie who I blogged about last year after learning how he is using Twitter, this goes to show you that ANY business can benefit from social media.

Since I liked the presentation Marcus gave so much, I’ve been reading some of his blogs, and one called The 3 Essential Qualities of a TRUE Social Media Expert caught my eye. I agree that his three qualities can define a social media expert. They include: 1) The “rules” are always changing, and every industry is different. 2) They freely admit they are not for everyone. 3) They can put their money where their mouth is.

Going hand-in-hand with #3, I would add the point that the social media expert is the right kind of expert for you/the job. Can you be a social media expert without being an author, keynote speaker or even known for social media? YES! Yes, yes and yes. So what are you seeking? If you want a social media expert to speak at an event, the author or keynote speaker will likely be a good fit. If you are looking for a person or a team to analyze your business, build a social media strategy and work with you on long-term goals and execution, the author or speaker might not be your best choice. Social Media Tips from a Southerner

May 18, 2012January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agency, Social Media + Influencer EngagementCounselors Academy, PR, PRSA, Raleigh PR Agency, Social Media7 Comments on Social Media Tips from a Southerner

As my Pinterest bio reads, I’m a midwesterner by birth and a southerner by choice. Technically the midwesterner part could be debated since my hometown in Southern Illinois is close enough to Kentucky that I think it is technically south of the Mason-Dixon Line. But, if that does not qualify me as a southerner, surely the fact that with the exception of short assignment at a PR agency in New York, I’ve spent the past 19 years living in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina does.

That, coupled with being married to a southern gentleman and raising a son in Raleigh, NC, has recently resulted in my heightened awareness (and embracing) of my southern-ness. As I watched friends from all over North America collaborate, socialize and talk at length about social media last week at PRSA’s Counselors Academy Conference, I realized there’s much to be learned about social media from southerner charm. Not following me? Well let me pour you a glass of sweat tea while you keep reading!

  • Use your manners. My son has never walked out the door to go to a friend’s house without me reminding him to mind his manners. It’s no surprise that his regular use of “yes ma’am” has won the praise of all the other moms. Saying please and thank you in your social media conversations will go a long way in earning respect. “Please like my agency’s Facebook page.” “Thank you for commenting on my blog.” Give it a try! Please. 🙂
  • Remember, salt and pepper are a pair. Having breakfast at the New Orleans Ritz, the host hotel of the conference, Abbie Fink asked Chuck Norman to pass the salt. Chuck passed the salt AND the pepper. This was something I learned when I moved further south, and Chuck said he was taught as a child in etiquette class that the two are married and should be passed together. If you blog on behalf of your brand, think of it as salt and pepper. Your brand has it’s attributes, messages and maybe even personality. You have your personality, interests and opinions. Yet it is important for the two of you to move about the dining table of social media as a set. Continue reading “Social Media Tips from a Southerner”
