Clairemont’s New Year Cheer

January 4, 2012January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, The Clairemont Team2012, Mac, Public Relations, Tervis Tumbler18 Comments on Clairemont’s New Year Cheer
Three cheers for Gelaskins!

Wow, 2011 was a whirlwind year that brought so many blessings to Clairemont, but we aren’t sad it’s gone with all we have to cheer about for 2012! What do we have to cheer about you ask? (Thanks for asking.) For starters, here are 12 things:

  1. Our very own Josephine Butler has been promoted! As the absolute best writer, a social media maven and a dedicated team member, she is living proof that hard work has its rewards. Congrats, Josie!
  2. Clairemont turns two this year! In fact, today is the 2nd anniversary of my resignation from an amazing position with a truly outstanding global agency — a very difficult decision and the first step in launching Clairemont.
  3. New clients! As 2011 was coming to a close, we added a new account and gained new client contacts for existing accounts. We look forward to doing the work we love for and with you and exceeding your expectations.
  4. We have a team member in Charlotte now! That’s right, the always-networking, media savvy and oh-so-stylish Ashely Hurteau has joined the Clairemont team and is based in Charlotte. Stay tuned for more news about our work in the Queen City.
  5. We also have a new team member in Raleigh, as Margot Horgan joins us this semester as an intern. Highly recommended for her sharp writing skills and social media know-how, we are thrilled she accepted our TLC (team, learning, career) internship.
  6. In the spirit of improved productivity (and coolness, so we’re told) Clairemont is transitioning from a PC agency to a Mac agency. I have to say, I will forever love my pink Lenovo ideapad, but as we continue to incorporate more video and creative elements into social media for our clients, we need more robust programs.
  7. Speaking of social media, three cheers for Pinterest! In addition to becoming an addicted pinner personally, we are excited about how we will be incorporating this platform into our clients’ 2012 communications strategies.
  8. With new computers come new accessories! Check out the photo of our Macs + Gelaskins. In addition to being a protective cover, this helped ease the pain of saying goodbye to my pink netbook as my everyday computer. I became a Gelaskin lover when I ordered one for my iPhone last year, and it has become my most complimented accessory.

Kickin' down doors and takin' names.
  9. New shoes! Yes seriously, shoes. Ever heard the Todd Snyder song, Sideshow Blues? I wholeheartedly believe the line, “it’s hard to kick the door down wearing seven dollar shoes.” Let’s just say that the Clairemont team has made some purchases and received some gifts that will adequately allow us to kick down all the doors we face in 2012.
  10. This year will be the 10th anniversary of Triangle Family Service’s Gingerbread Benefit. Because it is also the organization’s 75th anniversary, we will be working all year with the talented team at Triangle Family Services as our primary pro-bono account to promote both of these newsworthy milestones.
  11. We have a surprise! We can’t tell you about it now, but it certainly has us cheering. More to come! (And if I left that for No. 12, you would think I simply ran out of things that are cheer-worthy!)
  12. No. 12 is Twitter Tervis Tumblers! Beyond the alliteration of that sentence, we love Tervis Tumblers  because they help keep us green. If you have read our Green Thought Thursday posts, you know that we are all about baby steps to protecting our Mother Earth. Santa got on board with our no throw-away cups and fewer water bottles efforts and brought us TervisTumblers with our customized Twitter handles. Isn’t he considerate to think about the environment while helping us increase our following? (And never again do we have to have the conversation of who left her cup on the conference table!)

I could easily tell you 12 more things that have me totally jazzed about this year, but I’d rather hear about what is making you do cartwheels these days. Firecracker, firecracker, boom, boom, boom? We promise to cheer for each comment. In fact, we’ll come up with and video a cheer about the best one! Happy New Year!

Netflix: Why are people still so mad?

October 17, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, MarketingKris Schindler, Mike Allen, Netflix, Public Relations5 Comments on Netflix: Why are people still so mad?

It’s a More Monday! Maybe you’ve already heard the story, and now here’s a little bit more!

It was a dark and stormy night when I opened up this email from Netflix.

Doh!

And unfortunately, the story doesn’t get much better from here. In case you’ve missed it, Netflix recently announced a price increase, lost a million subscribers, announced a split between its DVDs-by-mail and online streaming (via Qwikster) services, lost even more subscribers as stocks tumbled and now, is taking it all back (except for the price increase – drat).

Even more unfortunate, most people aren’t taking things as lightly as I am. With thousands of recent additions to the instant streaming movies and TV shows library, including the company’s most recent acquisition of the rights to stream the CW shows, I am left wondering, what’s with all the hate mail, ill-fated comments and general malcontent? Why are people still so mad?

In a recent chat with Mike Allen, advertising aficionado and creative director, I received some insight. “They had the golden goose, and they killed it themselves,” he said. According to Mike, the company, which almost single-handedly put Blockbuster out of business, had one very big, very simple appeal: low cost. Now, people are leaving by the millions because they don’t want to pay the higher fees. “And not to mention they pulled this in the worst economy possible,” he added.

Kris Schindler, PR expert and social media star, agrees. “This is a great example of a company with a lot of brand loyalty that has created its own crisis,” she said. “Netflix should have been communicating all along what makes Netflix so great in the first place, focusing on the new improvements.” In that case, the price change wouldn’t have been so unexpected (and disrupting).

I couldn’t agree more.

But honestly, it’s not the price change that hurts me the most (I was halfway expecting it). What hurts the most is that it was too much, too soon, and now, I’ve got nowhere to go. Aw shucks, Netflix. Why’d you have to go and ruin something so good? I really want to break up with you, but I can’t because where else can I go to watch an entire season of Twin Peaks in just one sitting? I guess this means we’ll stick things out…for now.

Now it’s your turn. Why are you still so mad about the Netflix changes? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. We’d love to hear more on this More Monday!

Holiday Quickie

Typically our Mondays are Myrtle Mondays, and this week is inspired by Myrtle. We chose to do a holiday postcard for Clairemont’s first holiday season. Not as traditional as Myrtle’s postcards, we’ve attempted to combine a classic form of communications with a little something-something more current. Did you get our card? What did you think? Did you already have a QR code reader or did you have to download one? If you haven’t seen our card, take a look below and let us know what you think.

Don’t have a smartphone? Don’t worry, you can still see our video and get your holiday quickie!

Million Dollar Ideas

December 16, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Wonderfully Randomflu season, gig ideas, Public Relations2 Comments on Million Dollar Ideas
Start by finding something in a plastic packet or wrapper.

Nothing is more exciting than coming up with an idea for a client that results in something huge such as the company’s highest traffic day ever (check), the media begging you for the exclusive (check) or the CEO getting an invitation to meet with the President of the United States and join him in a news conference (check).

What about those super cool ideas you have that are totally unrelated to your job and your clients? You know the ones that come to you randomly in the shower or based on something you, as a consumer, want or need that doesn’t seem to exist. We all have them. Most of us can’t (or won’t) do anything with them when they have nothing to do with our careers or passions. Maybe someone else could. In fact, I wish someone would take some of my ideas and DO them.

One is for fast food restaurants. Why can we get BBQ sauce and honey mustard in dip-able containers but the ketchup is still in a packet that has to be ripped open and squeezed? I had this idea years ago. I think someone is doing it now, but there are still a lot of packets of ketchup.

My latest — and I think this is a great biggo whopper of an idea — a GPS system that alerts me when a school zone is approaching. Last year, I got a ticket for speeding in a school zone. I felt horrible. I travel by this school every day. But that day, my schedule had changed a bit, and I didn’t realize it was the time that the school zone was active. What if my GPS system could have alerted me? Surely that is possible.

Here’s one more. Remote control germ protectors. Yes, I thought I had overcome my germophobic ways until an unexpected stay in a hotel during flu season triggered a flashback. Even in the cleanest of hotels, I tend to wonder if they think to sanitize things such as the door knobs, phone and remote control. Until there is a product, I like to make my own by using the plastic covers from the cups in the room or the coffee packets. See my photos for my product demo!

What are some of your million+ dollar ideas that you have no time or interest in developing but sure wish someone would?

Carefully empty the contents.
It is almost a germ protector!
Voila!

Myrtle Monday: All About the Details

December 6, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Free Advice, InspirationalDetails, Myrtle Monday, Public Relations, Social Media, Storytelling1 Comment on Myrtle Monday: All About the Details

This week’s Myrtle Monday is all about the details! Upon arrival in Vienna and touring the Hofburg Palace and Schonbrunn Castle, Lela writes about silver and gold china, original furnishings and beautiful artwork. I can only imagine that when Lela returned home, she became the charming tour guide for Myrtle, recreating each and every detail of the trip.

With the holidays upon us, it seemed appropriate to blog about details — talk about going from blah to voila! A plain package is transformed with some pretty ribbon. A table goes from everyday to holiday with the addition of a festive runner. For me, a mood is created by the burning of a scented candle.

As a communicator, details are important to telling our clients’ stories. What details help paint the picture? Which are the best details to share? Where’s the balance between interesting and overkill? My friend, Karen, LOVES a detailed story. “Details, girl. Give me all the details,” she’ll say. But not all audiences have the time or the desire to hear ALL of the details.

Of course you also have to consider the medium and method of sharing the details. Back to my original Myrtle Monday point of postcards being the original Twitter, sometimes you are limited by space. I love that that never stopped Lela from making Myrtle feel like she was right there with her, seeing the world from her armchair in Small Town, USA.
