What Does Your Neighborhood Say About You?

What Does Your Neighborhood Say About You?

August 5, 2015January 31, 2023 Tracy LathanBlog, In Our Community, Real Estate PRapartment PR, apartments raleigh, best neighborhoods, downtown Raleigh, Raleigh PR, real estate PR

One of the many benefits of living in the Triangle is the multitude of options when it comes to neighborhoods and places to live. Whether you are seeking the right community for your growing family, single and looking for your first place or find yourself with an empty nest looking to downsize, there is a place for everyone. We also know there are a lot of factors that come into play when making a home-buying decision, including location, price, amenities, etc. But how important is the “personality” of the neighborhood and the type of buyer it attracts?

A recent article in the Triangle Business Journal called my attention to a blog post on Movoto titled Where to Live in Raleigh For Every Personality Type. After first reading this, I agreed it could be considered stereotypical, but I believe that there are some important takeaways.

As a long-time Five Points resident, I agree that my beloved neighborhood definitely has a “people-person personality.” Although you get much less house for your money than you would farther out, the eclectic feel, urban convenience and sense of community have kept me here for nearly 15 years.

The article also references the “trendy souls” and the “party animals” that are looking for options in downtown Raleigh. There is no doubt downtown Raleigh residential real estate is booming. One of our clients, The Lincoln Apartments, is preparing for its grand opening in just a few short weeks and, not surprisingly, the target demographic is hip, young professionals in their 20s and 30s who want to be able to walk to work, shops and restaurants.

It makes sense that people want to live in a community with others who are at a similar place in life and who share like interests. They want to be able to connect with and relate to their neighbors. And while we certainly don’t want to stereotype these communities, it can be helpful for those who are new to the area as they figure out the best fit.

Check out the Movoto article referenced above. Do you agree with these descriptions? Did they get the neighborhood’s personality type right?

Friday Five: 36 Hours in Raleigh

Friday Five: 36 Hours in Raleigh

March 20, 2015January 31, 2023 Tracy LathanBlog, Free Advice, In Our Community, Restaurant PR + Hospitality PRdowntown Raleigh, Restaurant PR

As you may recall, last March the NY Times ran an outstanding piece highlighting our beloved City of Oaks titled, 36 Hours in Raleigh. N.C. The article featured some the local restaurants, shops and museums that have helped put Raleigh on the map in recent years.

I’ve lived in Raleigh for almost twenty years now (wow time flies), so needless to say I have seen how much our great city has changed for the better. The growth has been steady, strong and smart. I have always lived and worked close to downtown, so keeping up with what new restaurants and businesses are opening and thriving has become a personal passion for me.

A few weeks ago, my college roommate came to visit for the weekend. When she left Raleigh in 2001, there were only a handful of good restaurant options and downtown certainly was not the destination it is today. My husband graciously offered to take the kids out of town for the weekend, so I had the chance to serve as tour guide and show my dear friend how things have changed in a “36 Hours in Raleigh” of our own. So, for today’s Friday Five, here are a few of the spots we visited along the way.

Friday Night – 8:00 p.m.

For dinner on Friday night I chose one of my favorite spots downtown, Poole’s Diner. Time after time Poole’s does not disappoint. My husband and dine here often and always prefer sitting at the bar, which helps trying to get a seat on a busy weekend night. The vibe, cocktails and menu are consistently good. We choose a few menu items to share and it was perfection.

We also had the most wonderful chocolate dessert at Poole’s made with Videri chocolate from the local chocolate factory in the Raleigh Depot. Videri is BYOB and has a great patio, so it’s a perfect spot to enjoy one last glass of wine and some delicious chocolate before heading home. They also offer factory tours and serve up Stumptown coffee if you are in the neighborhood have a chance to stop by in the morning. The owners, Sam and Starr Ratto, have really created something special.

Saturday Afternoon – 2:00 p.m.

We spent the afternoon on Saturday shopping, and since we both have young children, we had to stop in one of my favorite children’s boutiques in Five Points, Progeny Shoppe. Store owner, Lauren Hood, has created a curated collection of modern, hip clothing, accessories and toys for little ones. The store is delightful and it’s almost impossible to walk out empty handed!

Saturday Night – 6:30 pm

For dinner Saturday night I decided on another favorite of mine, Bida Manda. We started with a moscow mule and shared the lettuce wrap appetizer. The service is always fantastic, and the décor creates a warm atmosphere that draws you in off the street. A creature of habit, I always get the Pad Tai and am never disappointed.

Sunday Morning – 8:00 a.m.

I couldn’t think of a better way to end our weekend than with breakfast at Joule. Joule has quickly become my hands down favorite spot for leisurely weekend brunch, or for a quick breakfast during the week. I love the coffee, the hipster vibe, the vibrant décor and the community table. Obsessed with the grits and sourdough toast with avocado…what a great addition to downtown!

These are only a few of the spots we visited during our weekend tour – there were so many more we didn’t have time for. I was proud to see what Raleigh has become through her eyes. What also became clear along the way is that Raleigh has achieved the best of both world’s…home to an amazingly talented group of chefs, small business owners and entrepreneurs, Raleigh has maintained a local, organic, laid back feel. Nothing fancy, just good people, good times and really good food.

Keep Calm and Communicate

Keep Calm and Communicate

February 17, 2014January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, In Our Community, Public RelationsCarolina Theatre, downtown Raleigh, Marriott, PDQ, snowstorm, Triangle Business Journal2 Comments on Keep Calm and Communicate

As I sat around the conference table with fellow Raleigh public relations professionals for our NCPRSA board meeting on Wednesday, the snow began falling and whirling and swirling outside the windows. Thirty minutes earlier, I had boldly proclaimed to my team that I just didn’t believe “it” was going to happen. (But I packed a bag just in case that morning.)

Getting a room of PR people to abruptly end a discussion is no easy task, but one that was done when we were told under no uncertain terms that the building was closing. Our cars were covered and the lanes of the streets were no longer distinguishable by the time we got to the parking lot. That didn’t stop us from doing what everyone else did at that exact time — attempt to make a break for it! Yes, we all knew what happened in Atlanta earlier in the month, but that didn’t stop us from rushing to the safety of our own homes, needing to pick up our children or succumbing to the panic of a milk and bread shortage.

I had to make a game-time decision between joining my family at home or returning to The Clairemont House, knowing that my choice would determine where I would likely be “stuck” for the following days. With a scheduled dinner with out-of-town clients staying near the office, I decided to head downtown. Hey, one of them is Canadian, and I knew she’d never let me live it down if I cancelled over a couple of snowflakes! So, after it took 2.5 hours to drive 10 miles, I put my car in park (at the office for the next three days) and myself in observation mode. I knew it was about to get interesting.

The snow continued, businesses closed and fiery traffic accidents became the topic of national news. Most of the restaurants had closed, and we altered our dinner plans. I marveled at the most quiet downtown Raleigh scene on my walk to the Marriott to join our clients. With few choices, we decided to dine there. Enter smart communications observation #1.

The lobby, bar and restaurant of the Marriott became a makeshift home of winter storm hostages. Our clients included people from around the country, as well as a local who couldn’t make it home. Our fellow refugees shared similar stories. Some had cancelled flights. Some didn’t get out of their downtown offices soon enough. While many embraced the spontaneity like schoolkids on a snow day, for others, tensions ran high. For Raleigh Marriott City Center, it now had to figure out how to service a sudden surge in guest numbers with a short staff. Screen Shot 2014-02-16 at 3.04.18 PM

The hotel rose to the challenge. As soon as we nabbed an open table in the bar area, the server let us know that if we planned to order food, they were working on a limited menu due to being understaffed, and she listed the four or five items available. She was friendly and direct. She let us know right away before we looked at the regular menu and got our hearts set on something we couldn’t have. The beauty of this simple and clear verbal communication was reinforced by the customer service actions all around us. The suited manager was busing tables. The always-smiling bartender had been there since the morning shift. I never saw a Marriott staff member look frustrated, nor did I hear anyone complain.

Across the Triangle the next night, Carolina Theatre decided the show must go on despite the fact that the weather kept many ticket-holders glued to the local news instead of enjoying a live performance by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. After much criticism for this decision involving the upholding of its refunds policy, enter smart communications observation #2. Theatre management issued a statement on its blog called, A Letter to Angry Fans Concerning the Weather.

Having worked at a performing arts center early in my career, I understand that you simply can’t reschedule a stop on national tour. I’ve also found that people who work in arts organizations typically do it as a labor of love for the arts and the community. The letter reminds readers that the target of angry and threatening comments, which can be expressed through impersonal, online channels, are people. People who are most likely hardworking, community-supporting neighbors. Extra kudos to Carolina Theatre for continuing to evaluate the feedback (despite the harshness) and respond by offering tickets to an upcoming show.

The snow began to melt on Friday morning. Having been away from home since Wednesday morning, I was busy trying to wrap up work for the week when smart communications observation #3 was delivered to my inbox. A letter from Triangle Business Journal’s publisher, Bryan Hamilton, let me know that this week’s print edition was coming, albeit a little late. In addition to really admiring the tone of the note below, I think it conveys that the TBJ staff really tried to make it happen. And when they knew it was time to accept defeat, they shifted gears to anticipating their customers’ questions of when will I get it and what can I do in the meantime? Providing instructions on how to get the content online was absolutely brilliant, and I received this email before I would have typically received the print edition on my doorstep, leaving no time to even ask the question, “Where is my TBJ?”

Bravo, Marriott! Bravo, Carolina Theatre! Bravo, Triangle Business Journal! Also, my hat is off to the NC State students who helped stranded motorists, our local news crews who worked around the clock to provide updates, our fire/police/emergency responders, Clairemont client PDQ for delivering free food to those stranded and those helping others, and the Thursday lunch staff at The Raleigh Times (who might have also been the dinner staff and the late night staff) for embracing the “we can’t go anywhere, we might as well drink beer” mentality of its wall-to-wall patrons who had very few choices of open places in downtown Raleigh.

Artspace 12th Annual Collectors Gala

Artspace 12th Annual Collectors Gala

November 22, 2013January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, In Our CommunityArtspace, Artspace Collectors Gala, Artspace Gala, downtown Raleigh, Raleigh Art, Raleigh Artists

Working in downtown Raleigh has some pretty amazing perks (too many to count, in fact), but my personal favorite is the eclectic collection of creative shops, restaurants, businesses and artists in our 110-block city center. They are part of a thriving community that has helped Raleigh become the fastest growing major city in the great state of North Carolina.

One of these local spots is Artspace. Just a stone throw away from The Clairemont House, Artspace is a vibrant studio environment of established and emerging artists in addition to a center for education and nationally acclaimed exhibitions. In sum, it’s Raleigh’s hub for visual arts, creation and interaction.

Earlier this month, Artspace held a Media Preview Event for its 12th Annual Collectors Gala, which will benefit the nonprofit’s artists and exhibitions, educational programming and community outreach. Those in attendance at the preview event got a first glimpse of the artwork, which will be featured in the gala’s live auction and were even invited to create an art piece of their own.

Saturday, November 23 from 6 to 11 p.m. is your chance to see this beautiful artwork yourself. Come out for an evening of art, friends, music and food at Artspace’s 12th Annual Collectors Gala.

Keeping with tradition, the Collectors Gala will spotlight the art with a chance to bid on local artwork in live and silent auctions, as well as to purchase artwork displayed throughout the building.

While mingling with fellow guests and browsing the galleries, the event’s epicurean attendees can enjoy savory delicacies prepared local chefs. The evening will feature passed hors d’oeuvres and chef stations serving small plates and desserts created by the incredibly delicious Ladyfingers Catering.

Last year, the Collectors Gala gathered a crowd of more than 450 business leaders and art enthusiasts, raising $114,000 for Artspace artists, projects education and community outreach. With the amount of incredible art, culture and education Artspace provides to the Raleigh community, it is not difficult to see why so many show their support at the organization’s annual gala.

Meet Erin: Another “E” Summer Intern at Clairemont

June 12, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Professional Development, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agencydowntown Raleigh, Erin Kelley, intern, PR internship, Raleigh, Summer Internship, UNC

Say hello to another one of Clairemont’s summer “E” interns, Erin Kelley! She joins us as a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is a J School student. Already, Erin has shown us what she can do, and without further ado, we’d like to share this interview with you (no, we did not mean for that to rhyme – it just did).

Meet Erin!

So Erin, you’re from Winston-Salem. How long have you lived in North Carolina?

My entire life…so almost 21 years.

That’s a long time.

Yeah, and my family has always stayed in the same house, even. We never moved.

Sheesh. You’re quite the NC lover. Is that why you love UNC so much?

It is!

So, about that. How did you decide to study PR in college, anyway?

I declared public relations as my major the day after I finished up my freshman year. The real answer is that I took Business 100, and it wasn’t what I thought it would be…so I added marketing and communications to the mix to make things more interesting.

And now you’re going into your senior year. What are you looking forward to the most?

A class called Branding of Me with Gary Kayye. I want to integrate all of my social media accounts and have a website where you can find me on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest and on my personal blog. This class should really help me with that.

Do you know Gary Kayye? He’s pretty awesome. I spoke to his class last year.

He presented at one of our PRSSA meetings this past year, and that’s how I heard about his class.

So how involved are you in PRSSA?

I was attended a lot of meetings this past year, and next year, I will be the treasurer, making everyone pay dues! It has been such a great experience because it has helped me with my resume and cover letter, and it’s great for networking. It gets you in with the speakers, and from there, you can build meaningful relationships and get a better understanding of what life will be like after college.

So you realize the importance of networking?

I feel like with today’s economy and the way journalism is evolving, that’s the only way to get into an agency. And, of course, having the UNC connection is always really helpful.

I’d say so. That’s why I was so excited about your resume – I saw the UNC email address!

Thank you! I guess the thing I am really working on right now with networking is keeping in touch with important contacts and making sure I reach out to someone if I have any questions or need advice.

And that’s really important. It can be the difference between forgetting about someone and keeping them at top of mind….So what have you learned so far at Clairemont?

Well, first off, I have learned that I love working in downtown Raleigh! I have also learned the importance of using the correct tone when you’re speaking to different audiences. For instance, when I am helping to write a Drexel Heritage blog post, I am always cognizant that I need to be using the voice of a fashionista. I have also learned a lot about the importance of media lists and thinking about strategy when you’re pitching. Oh, and I’ve been thinking a lot more about the appropriate channels to go to with my stories. I never realized how involved it all is!

Indeed, it is! You’re a quick learner, Erin! Anything else you want people to know about you? Any hobbies?

I signed up for the City of Oaks half marathon in November. It will be my second. I am following in the footsteps of Dana!
