Postcards: The Original Twitter

September 20, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Inspirational, Social Media + Influencer Engagement2 Comments on Postcards: The Original Twitter

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting PRSarahEvans and she echoed what we tell our clients about social media. It is simply a tool. She compared it to the telephone — you don’t pick up the phone and start talking without knowing how to use it, who you want to talk with or what you want to say. Great point!

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by social media if you are new to using it. Here’s another analogy that might offer some comfort. Think of postcards as the original Twitter. People sometimes ask me, “How can you say anything in 140 characters?” My response, “Have you ever sent a postcard?”

For companies and organizations, remember to start with your business objectives supported by your communications plan (objectives)… then strategy… then you get to tactics which can include traditional and social. If you need some help, call us!
We love blending traditional communications and social media. We also like drawing comparisons between the “old-fashioned” and “emerging” ways to communicate. Because of this, today is our first Myrtle Monday.

I have a very magical story about how I acquired a collection of several decades of postcards written to Myrtle and all of the interesting things that have happened to me since I “met” her. The story is best told in-person — ask me the next time you see me. In the meantime, we’ll be sharing Myrtle’s postcards and talking about how they relate to communications today…. or simply what we love about them in some cases. Today’s Myrtle Monday lesson: How to write in less than 140 characters. The original Twitter!

Social Media in Recruiting and Hiring

September 9, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Owning a Business, Public Relations, Social Media + Influencer EngagementHiring, Human Resources, Public Relations, Recruiting, Social Media1 Comment on Social Media in Recruiting and Hiring

In need of communications professionals with an understanding of social media, we posted our job descriptions on our blog and then tweeted and Facebooked it out to our contacts. To help spread the word, our contacts did the same.

When Clairemont launched, it was our goal to find the perfect blend of traditional communications and social media for our clients. We proudly do just that for our clients, with a high majority of the day-to-day work falling on the social side. That’s why I was impressed when one candidate creatively demonstrated that 1) she understood the importance of social media to Clairemont clients and 2) that she had a working knowledge of how to use it by sending me a thank you note in the form of a blog post. (It was the “Thanks, Dana” sign that did it form me!)

She then took the blog entry and posted it to my Facebook page. To continue using social media as part of the hiring process, I asked my Facebook friends (many of whom are other communications professionals) to like the post if they thought I should hire her. Twenty-five likes and 19 comments later, Continue reading “Social Media in Recruiting and Hiring”

Right Time for a Facebook Fan Page

August 10, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Social Media + Influencer Engagement

I might sound like a broken record but without an objective, supported by a strong strategy, tactics are meaningless. As PR people, it is really important that we remember this when incorporating social media into our client plans (and our own promotional strategies). You ask, “Why is Clairemont just now setting up a fan page on Facebook when you’ve been helping clients with Facebook since the day you opened your doors?” It’s all part of the plan my friends… part of the plan.

From BusinessWeek: Twitter, Twitter Little Stars

July 19, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Social Media + Influencer Engagement

I just read a great article from Bloomberg BusinessWeek called Twitter, Twitter Little Stars. Props for the title and for using the word boomlet in the story. My absolute favorite part comes from another PR person. Check this out:

A long professional track record is not necessarily a prerequisite. Curtis Hougland, the founder of Attention, a New York-based specialist in social media PR and marketing, says the supply of seasoned candidates has failed to keep pace with demand. As a result, a swarm of self-proclaimed social media rainmakers has appeared at job interviews, aiming to parlay a high number of Facebook friends or Twitter followers into salaried positions with benefits—all of which is vaguely reminiscent of the frenzied hiring during the first Internet boom in the late 1990s. “There’s a tremendous amount of B.S.,” says Hougland. “The company hiring may not have the sophistication in social to verify the person’s experience. They may be personally really active on Twitter and have a great blog, but it doesn’t mean that they understand how to apply it to a business context.”

Amen, Curtis. Sometimes the only thing more preposterous for some of those making the self proclamation is the titles they give themselves. Guru is obviously pompous, yet I will say confident. On the other hand, when did taking a word with a negative connotation and using it as a self-descriptor turn said word into something cool? (But presumably less pompous.)

While I seek candidates with combined traditional communications and social media/emerging communications experience, I’d like to add the following disclaimer: Geeks, nerds and ninjas need not apply.

Clairemont on Social Networking

May 11, 2010January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Social Media + Influencer Engagement2 Comments on Clairemont on Social Networking

We tend to get a little fired up about social networking here at Clairemont. After all, social networking — or at least the desire to integrate it into overall strategic communications campaigns — was one of the reasons Clairemont was started. If you want to know how I really feel, just use the term social networking expert in a conversation with me. Why? Because I don’t believe in social networking experts. I believe in communications experts.

I recently had the opportunity to talk about what we do at Clairemont on WCHL’s Today’s Business with Jeremy Salemson. If you listen to the interview, you will hear that a large portion of our time was spent discussing social networking. Because of that, Jeremy invited me to be a guest on another show he hosts on WRAL.com, Business Today, to discuss social networking again. The format allows for short Q’s and A’s, so if this sparks more detailed questions for you, please contact me for further discussion.
