Jack is Back!

May 10, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Fashion, Furniture PR

We absolutely love our client Drexel Heritage, especially since we’re constantly getting new decorating ideas from them! Here is a trend we loved blogging about last week on the Drexel Heritage Blog — it’s one that we’ll have to incorporate into the Clairemont office somehow…

When it comes to furniture design, a royal wedding can mean only one thing: Jack is back….Union Jack, that is! In our first blog – Another British Invasion – we shared how we’ve been using the royal emblem in our new upholstery designs. Now, in the wake of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s recent wedding, there’s no doubt that the Union Jack is also making its way into showrooms across the country. Our proof? High Point Market.

In her recent trip to spring Market, Patricia Sheridan of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also noticed that the British trend has taken the country by storm. In her article, WhoWHATWhereWhy: British Home Furniture Invasion, she spotted the blue, red and white emblem on anything from clothes to bedding. Some designers, she wrote, took a bold approach, and some designers favored a more subtle approach. One of those was Drexel Heritage…

We opted for a more understated yet sophisticated look with our British-inspired ottoman/coffee table. The visual interest of this piece, our Connoisseur Ottoman featuring custom upholstery, was divided into four sections, each with an image of a British royal symbol, one of which being the Union Jack.

There is no doubt that in the coming weeks and months we will continue to see a celebration of British traditions. Be sure to share ways that you celebrated and/or decorated for the royal wedding in your home!

My Clairemont Experience

May 9, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, The Clairemont Team

Our second fabulous spring intern, Miss Hope Hemby, has also completed her internship at Clairemont. While we’re sad to see her go, we certainly are glad she learned so much during her time here!

She gave us Hope at Clairemont (get it?)!

In the undergrad years, professors, advisors, parents and all of those wiser than you try to give you the best advice they can while you are still a young and impressionable college student. They nag you about studying, going to class and keeping up your GPA. They also love to constantly remind you to get “experience in your field.” Advisors threaten that if you don’t get an internship (or several), your resume will be a destitute, hopeless waste of paper and you will never ever be hired by anyone worth working for….And then the sky will cave in, the world will end and we will all die! But the truth is, they are right (well, mostly). It is absolutely vital to intern because you’re able to learn things you like and don’t like about a particular field and whether or not you want to pursue a career in the area. Not to mention that they don’t look too shabby on your resume, either!

As a junior business administration major at NC State, I knew the time had come to find an internship. Little did I know that what awaited me was so much more than simply an internship. In late December 2010, internship a-hunting I did go. Thankfully, I found Clairemont Communications. When I interviewed on that fateful January day, I knew that if given the chance, I would love working with these fabulous, dog-loving ladies. And I was right!

I started my internship here at Clairemont in the beginning of February, and I have enjoyed every minute – I have a new-found love for the PR side of marketing! I have also discovered my love for writing and am thankful to have been able to put it to good use with blog postings and other fun projects. I was even able to successfully pitch a story about an important community event.

Just when things couldn’t get any better, they did. In March, Clairemont took on another intern, the lovely Whitney Medlin. I had the pleasure of working with her on Wednesdays and Fridays. We collaborated on projects, chatted about our love for studying abroad in Florence and teamed up in UNC versus NCSU debates with Josie (Go Pack!).

Even though she is a Tarheel fan, another highlight of working at Clairemont has been the wonderful company of Miss Josie Butler. Working alongside her for the past few months has been such a treat. Her impressive work ethic and amazing sense of humor have greatly added to my experience here. Whether we were working hard, playing with makeup or doing funny arm exercises to 80’s music, I looked forward to every day that I had the pleasure of being around her.

Last but certainly not least, the woman behind Clairemont Communications – Dana Hughens. I came to Clairemont eager to learn what it takes to successfully run an entrepreneurial venture. Whether or not she realized it, Dana showed me that and so much more. From her example, I learned that strength, patience and confidence in what you do are not only key to success in business, but in life as well. Her perseverance, innovative spirit and commitment to Clairemont are truly inspiring.

Working at Clairemont Communications has been such a wonderful experience. I am truly going to miss working with the fantastic staff and, of course, the dogs. I am certain that I have gained far more than I bargained for in an internship. I am sad to leave, but I am so thankful to have had the opportunity.

All great things…

May 6, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, The Clairemont Team
We\’ll miss Miss Whit!

My final day of interning at Clairemont Communications has sadly arrived. I definitely wasn’t here long enough, but there was still enough time to learn quite a few things from the rest of the team!

Dana, the best boss ever, is clearly successful and definitely has lots of knowledge to share. With her help I have a better understanding of the PR world in general, which I hadn’t been exposed to before. Prior to interning here I didn’t quite understand just how much goes on at once – phone meetings with clients, social media updates and events and researching some of the weirdest topics, like ice cream carts for example.

Another especially important part of this industry is writing. Copy, blogs, Facebook posts, press releases, you name it. I would not necessarily say writing is one of my strong points so thankfully Josie, the journalism queen, has been able to help me along in this area. She gave me some very helpful tips about writing structure, tone and the average amount of an article that a person actually reads (they usually don’t get too far).

For Hope, my intern partner, I’ve admired her great sense of style and positive outlook since day one. At the office, we’ve been trying to learn her makeup techniques and occasionally mimic her outfits and accessory usage. And I have loved being able to work with her everyday and feed off of her fun spirit and eagerness to learn.

The people at Clairemont are what make it such a great place to work. There’s never a dull moment with this group, and they even make hard work enjoyable! I’m definitely going to miss coming to work everyday, but I hope the team knows they’re not getting rid of me that easy!

Green Thought Thursday: Zely & Ritz

May 5, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability

For today’s Green Thought Thursday, we’ll take a look at local foods as taste tested by our intern Hope Hemby!

Hope loved meeting Chef Sarig!

Located in Raleigh hotspot Glenwood South, Zely & Ritz takes pride in using local ingredients and organic food. In fact, it’s the only restaurant in the area to have its own farm! Coon Rock Farm in Hillsborough provides Zely & Ritz with freshly grown veggies and pasture-raised meat and eggs. The restaurant also buys ingredients from 50 other local farms. My friend and I decided to check it all out for ourselves and to see if Chef Sarig would live up to his reputation and wow us with a culinary masterpiece.

Hope\’s tequila cilantro cocktail

Sure enough, we were not disappointed! Upon arriving to the restaurant, we were greeted by the friendly staff and were seated in no time at all. We started off the evening with one of Zely and Ritz’s signature drinks, the tequila cilantro cocktail. The drink was so fresh and unique, and with a slice of jalapeno, had just the right kick to it.

While we sipped our cocktails, we were able to take in the amazing atmosphere, unique décor and just enjoy the ambience. We nibbled on the warm, freshly baked bread and ordered a delicious starter of creamy brie in between a pastry with mixed greens with a hint of apple.

Hope\’s decadent dessert — feta cheesecake!

After our mouth watering appetizer and much deliberation, we finally decided on our entrees. I opted for the sweet potato gnocchi, and my date went for the steak. We could not decide which one we liked better! His beef was perfectly paired with a cilantro and lime reduction. My sweet potato gnocchi was mixed in with brussell sprouts, broccoli and a tasty spinach puree. We also just had to order a side of the creamy asparagus risotto!

We ate to our hearts’ (or stomachs’) content, and just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, it did. Chef Sirag told us he wanted to make one of his favorite desserts especially for us! We were lucky enough to try the most decadent dessert, a feta cheesecake with an apricot glaze. The fresh cheesecake was perfectly positioned in between a light, golden pastry and was garnished with an artfully arranged vanilla bean pod.

On top of the impeccable service, decadent food and incredible atmosphere, I got to snap a picture with the chef!

Zely & Ritz strives to support local ingredients and provide the Raleigh area with the option of delicious, healthy foods that not only taste good, but are good for you!

Passion for Fashion

May 4, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Fashion
Holly Wilensky, the Dress Recycler

This blog was written by our very own fashionista and intern, Whitney Medlin. Enjoy!

I love fashion. I go to a fashion school, I attempt to wear fashionable clothes, and I browse way too many fashion magazines. As if that weren’t enough, I work with three very fashionable ladies at Clairemont. This is exactly why I decided to interview Holly Wilensky, fashionista and creative communicator, about her fashion blog, The Dress Recycler.

Trading in more than 10 years of restaurant experience and her St. Mary’s College degree for a shot at the big time, Holly found herself accepted into the American Intercontinental University of Atlanta. Graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design, Holly was ready to put her degree to work.

Making the rash and typical “Holly” move, she picked up her stuff and headed to New York City. What she found there, though, was not what she expected. Many of the design positions were in offices…at desks. Thankfully, it was during this time that Holly decided to start her own blog, and she never looked back.

Holly, an expert shopper, began The Dress Recycler, a blog about “saving people from the clutches of retail prices” and giving them tips on how to find the best deals at thrift stores and secondhand shops. Her main mission is just to inspire her readers, which she describes as artists struggling in NYC, living dollar to dollar, but still wanting to have fun with their many styles.

And Holly definitely knows how to have fun with her own personal style. She loves the classic look of the 50’s with hourglass shapes and A-line dresses, but isn’t afraid to wear pieces that are a little more daring, like her colorful polyester dresses from the 70’s. Showcasing her own style, Holly shares her passion for fashion and shopping knowledge with all of her readers.

And what tips does Holly have for us? Lots! When you’re shopping, be sure to check the zipper, look at hemlines, and make sure there is no damage (or at least that it can be easily repaired). Once you take your new clothes home, she explains how to sew on a button, change a hemline and even how to clean some of the more delicate pieces. If you’re in the mood for something a little lighter, you’ll love her interesting tales about garbage cans, questionable clothing and buying clothes off of someone’s New York City stoop.

For the rest of Holly’s exciting stories and great shopping advice, go check out Holly Wilensky, The Dress Recycler NOW!
