Green Thought Thursday: Feeling Thrifty?

March 10, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability
No picture could ever do this sequined beauty justice (the shirt, not me)!

I can’t tell you how many awesome shirts, skirts and jackets I’ve found over the course of a year at various thrift store locations. One of my favorites that I must share — this awesome sequined shirt, courtesy of Goodwill‘s Patton Avenue location in Asheville. It was only $3. What a steal!

But what’s even more awesome about shopping for clothes at thrift stores is the impact you’re having on our environment. By donating and shopping for second-hand clothing you are putting the three R’s into practice. You’re reducing the amount of packaging, plastic shopping bags, textiles and electronics that end up in landfills, and you’re reusing and recycling items that don’t need to be thrown away (or in the case of my pink sequined shirt, NEVER should be thrown away).

Goodwill Industries alone reported keeping 38,886,595 pounds of clothing and other items from ending up in landfills in 2009. That’s 2,632,475 pounds of computers; 2,129,793 pounds of metal; 1,439,711 pounds of cardboard; 285,862 pounds of purses; 800,095 pounds of shoes; 2,531,919 pounds of books; and 29,066,742 pounds of textile clothing. Holy cow!

So next time you’re looking for a new pair of boots to match that dress, how about stopping by Goodwill, the Salvation Army or, if you’re in Raleigh, Father & Son Antiques, first?

We're Hiring PR Superstars!

March 3, 2011January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Public RelationsPR agency jobs, PR jobs, PR openings, PR positions

I’m delighted to say that once again we are issuing a call for PR superstars. Here are the details…

Clairemont Communications takes a tactics-agnostic approach to devising communications strategies using both traditional and social media. Clairemont leads on QUALITY — quality of service, quality of experience and quality of the deliverables. We carefully select clients who are motivated, passionate, focused and respectful. It is our promise to work as hard, if not harder, than our clients in achieving their business objectives through communications and improving the strength of their brands.

Clairemont is currently seeking smart, responsible, creative and hard-working people who are ready to tackle any assignment and join a highly-motivated, growing team of communications professionals who share in the passion of delivering quality client service while enjoying the collaboration and co-learning of a team environment. We are currently interviewing for the positions of intern and account executive.

Abbreviated job descriptions are as follows:

Intern: Clairemont Communications is currently interviewing intern candidates for the summer and fall semesters. Primary duties and responsibilities include conducting research on behalf of our clients, assisting with a variety of writing assignments (event calendar listings, blog entries, Facebook posts, tweets, catalog copy, news releases, media alerts, etc), working with Clairemont team members to meet client deliverables and making media and client deliveries as well as running errands as needed. Interns are expected to work within the confines of approved written plans of activities, represent the agency in a professional manner, participate in internal meetings, read and study traditional and online information relevant to clients and the public relations industry. Our internships are experience based, designed around the three components of team, learning and career. They are non-paid, and we prefer to work with students who can earn college credit as an intern.

Account Executive: Clairemont’s account executives work well in a collaborative environment and independently when needed. Primary duties and responsibilities include ensuring that work assigned to her/himself, as well as work assigned to the interns, account coordinators and assistant account executives, is delivered to the account supervisor and/or client on-time and satisfactorily, and that relevant team members are kept up-to-date on the status of accounts and assigned projects. Clairemont account execs establish and maintain strong personal rapport with clients, vendors, partners, reporters, editors and social media influencers, and demonstrate the ability to anticipate needs, solve problems and serve as a positive role model for other team members. Strong writing, project management, organization, planning, media relations and social media skills are required. Communications experience, with a minimum of 3-5 years in an agency environment is required. Resumes of applicants who do not meet this requirement will not be considered, nor receive a response to resumes submitted.

A Friday Favorite: York Wallcoverings

February 25, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Clairemont Client News, Furniture PR

This week we posted the following blog for our client, Drexel Heritage, and we just had to share it with you here, too! In a recent photo shoot with Diana Parrish, York Wallcoverings featured Drexel Heritage furniture against backdrops of eye-popping patterns, intricately designed details and beautiful colors. The photos are so captivating, we couldn’t help but feature them as our Friday Favorite. Enjoy!

Word of the Week: Architexture

What’s our favorite word of the week? “Architexture,” as coined by blogger Pretty Organized Palacewho used textured wallpaper to not only spruce up a mantle, but also fashion placemats, decorate file organizers and make over dingy lampshades.

And that’s not the only way bloggers are using this trending feature in home décor. We also love how Suzy’s Artsy-Craftsy Sitcome used textured wallpaper to create faux boiserie in this entryway.

We, too, are caught in the craze! In a recent photo shoot by York Wallcoverings, designers showcased Drexel Heritage furniture in rooms that feature some of their limited-edition textured wallpaper. The reflection from our mirrored Miriam Console illuminates the fluted glass beading of this wallcovering.

Designers also complemented this cream wallcovering with the Cloe Lamp Table from our Et Cetera collection.

We want to hear about ways that you are using textured wallpaper in your home. Is it in your bathroom? In your living room? On your lampshades or stairwell? We’re always open to new ideas!

Green Thought Thursday: The Abominable Plastic Grocery Bag

February 24, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability2 Comments on Green Thought Thursday: The Abominable Plastic Grocery Bag
If you leave your resuable grocery bags by the door, you won\’t forget them!

If you’re an avid follower of the News & Observer’s blog The Green Scene, then you might have caught this, too. Japanese inventor Akinori Ito has created a device that will turn all of those abominable plastic shopping bags into gasoline!

Are you as excited as I am? This means there’s a place besides the landfill for the reported 500 billion to 1 trillion bags used each year!

With a $10,000 price tag, though, I won’t have my hands on one of these babies any time soon. In the mean time, here are a few ways to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic grocery bags:

Reduce
– While waiting to check out, bag your own groceries. If you do it yourself, you’re more likely to pack more groceries into one bag.
– I may sound like Captain Obvious here, but shop with reusable grocery bags. The best part is that you can usually snag a few for free during fairs, expos and school functions.

Reuse
– Don’t have enough reusable grocery bags? Bring back your old plastic bags! They’re most likely good for another round or two of shopping before they give out.
– Scoop your poop! No bag is a better size for picking up doggie waste than a plastic grocery bag. Even the little bags you can buy at the pet store aren’t cutting it for ‘ol Charley boy!
– Pack your lunch in a plastic bag. It’s what I’ve had to do since I’ve completely destroyed two lunch boxes.
– Donate your bags. Food banks, dog parks and thrift stores often rely on these donations!

Recycle
– Figure out where you can recycle plastic bags in your area. I recommend searching on Earth911.com. They have compiled a list of places in each city where you can drop off not only plastic bags, but also things like cell phones, batteries and ink cartridges.
– Encourage your local grocer to switch to 100% compostable plastic bags if they’re not using them already.

I know there’s a million other little ways to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic bags, and we want to hear them! Tell us how you’re keeping the planet green, one grocery bag at a time. We’ve got a special prize in store for our favorite greenie! Just submit your entries in the comments section below or on our Facebook page. Stay tuned for the winner…
