Green Thought Thursday: Zely & Ritz

May 5, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability

For today’s Green Thought Thursday, we’ll take a look at local foods as taste tested by our intern Hope Hemby!

Hope loved meeting Chef Sarig!

Located in Raleigh hotspot Glenwood South, Zely & Ritz takes pride in using local ingredients and organic food. In fact, it’s the only restaurant in the area to have its own farm! Coon Rock Farm in Hillsborough provides Zely & Ritz with freshly grown veggies and pasture-raised meat and eggs. The restaurant also buys ingredients from 50 other local farms. My friend and I decided to check it all out for ourselves and to see if Chef Sarig would live up to his reputation and wow us with a culinary masterpiece.

Hope\’s tequila cilantro cocktail

Sure enough, we were not disappointed! Upon arriving to the restaurant, we were greeted by the friendly staff and were seated in no time at all. We started off the evening with one of Zely and Ritz’s signature drinks, the tequila cilantro cocktail. The drink was so fresh and unique, and with a slice of jalapeno, had just the right kick to it.

While we sipped our cocktails, we were able to take in the amazing atmosphere, unique décor and just enjoy the ambience. We nibbled on the warm, freshly baked bread and ordered a delicious starter of creamy brie in between a pastry with mixed greens with a hint of apple.

Hope\’s decadent dessert — feta cheesecake!

After our mouth watering appetizer and much deliberation, we finally decided on our entrees. I opted for the sweet potato gnocchi, and my date went for the steak. We could not decide which one we liked better! His beef was perfectly paired with a cilantro and lime reduction. My sweet potato gnocchi was mixed in with brussell sprouts, broccoli and a tasty spinach puree. We also just had to order a side of the creamy asparagus risotto!

We ate to our hearts’ (or stomachs’) content, and just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, it did. Chef Sirag told us he wanted to make one of his favorite desserts especially for us! We were lucky enough to try the most decadent dessert, a feta cheesecake with an apricot glaze. The fresh cheesecake was perfectly positioned in between a light, golden pastry and was garnished with an artfully arranged vanilla bean pod.

On top of the impeccable service, decadent food and incredible atmosphere, I got to snap a picture with the chef!

Zely & Ritz strives to support local ingredients and provide the Raleigh area with the option of delicious, healthy foods that not only taste good, but are good for you!

Passion for Fashion

May 4, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Fashion
Holly Wilensky, the Dress Recycler

This blog was written by our very own fashionista and intern, Whitney Medlin. Enjoy!

I love fashion. I go to a fashion school, I attempt to wear fashionable clothes, and I browse way too many fashion magazines. As if that weren’t enough, I work with three very fashionable ladies at Clairemont. This is exactly why I decided to interview Holly Wilensky, fashionista and creative communicator, about her fashion blog, The Dress Recycler.

Trading in more than 10 years of restaurant experience and her St. Mary’s College degree for a shot at the big time, Holly found herself accepted into the American Intercontinental University of Atlanta. Graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design, Holly was ready to put her degree to work.

Making the rash and typical “Holly” move, she picked up her stuff and headed to New York City. What she found there, though, was not what she expected. Many of the design positions were in offices…at desks. Thankfully, it was during this time that Holly decided to start her own blog, and she never looked back.

Holly, an expert shopper, began The Dress Recycler, a blog about “saving people from the clutches of retail prices” and giving them tips on how to find the best deals at thrift stores and secondhand shops. Her main mission is just to inspire her readers, which she describes as artists struggling in NYC, living dollar to dollar, but still wanting to have fun with their many styles.

And Holly definitely knows how to have fun with her own personal style. She loves the classic look of the 50’s with hourglass shapes and A-line dresses, but isn’t afraid to wear pieces that are a little more daring, like her colorful polyester dresses from the 70’s. Showcasing her own style, Holly shares her passion for fashion and shopping knowledge with all of her readers.

And what tips does Holly have for us? Lots! When you’re shopping, be sure to check the zipper, look at hemlines, and make sure there is no damage (or at least that it can be easily repaired). Once you take your new clothes home, she explains how to sew on a button, change a hemline and even how to clean some of the more delicate pieces. If you’re in the mood for something a little lighter, you’ll love her interesting tales about garbage cans, questionable clothing and buying clothes off of someone’s New York City stoop.

For the rest of Holly’s exciting stories and great shopping advice, go check out Holly Wilensky, The Dress Recycler NOW!

This Little Whitney Went to Market

April 25, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, The Clairemont Team

Our intern Whitney made her first trip to Market this month. We asked her to write up a short blog about her experience there, and judging by what she wrote, it’s safe to say she loved it!

Whitney\’s in charge!

From everything I heard the week leading up to High Point Furniture Market, I expected it to be fast-paced, exciting, busy and fun. Well…I was right! From the very beginning I realized the scale of this six-day event when I ended up having to park my car several miles away at a shopping mall (along with probably hundreds of others)!

After my long bus ride in, I met up with Dana and Josie at the International Home Furnishings Center, and we began our journey up to the showrooms of Clairemont’s clients, Thomasville and Drexel Heritage. At first I thought the showrooms on the ground floor were big….But that was before I saw the size of the showrooms on the eighth floor – those of Thomasville and Drexel! This year’s Market had an unbelievable 2,000 exhibitors. Judging by the size of some of the showrooms, that’s a whole lot of furniture to see!

A snapshot from Whitney\’s favorite room.

Throughout the day I was fortunate enough to spend time interacting with film crews, magazine editors and Thomasville and Drexel Heritage representatives. I even “starred” in a clip about my favorite furniture piece, a funky yellow sofa (not to be confused with a “couch”). Receiving the grand tour by our very own Josie Butler, I had a better understanding of how everything comes together for Market and all of the different people that visit during the day.

I also took time to take notes of the several new trends I spotted in the showrooms. From upholstered tables to retro designs to eye-catching colors, I had a hard time picking out my favorites, but there was one specific room that I just loved. I don’t know if it was the bright pink and deep purple paints or the large-print floral fabrics, but this room had such a unique vibe – definitely an inspiration for my next design project!

Overall, I had a great time learning the ins and outs of Market and am so thankful I was able to witness the excitement first-hand.

Good Dog Friday

It has been awhile since we’ve gone on and on about how much we love our dogs at Clairemont, and since we deemed today as Good Dog Friday, we figured now is the time. Here are Billy and Charley, both adopted from the SPCA of Wake County.

Green Thought Thursday: Grandma’s Pearls

April 21, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability
Out with the old (left), and in with the new (right)!

They are sentimental keepsakes, family heirlooms, priceless memories – they are Grandma’s jewelry. As women, at some point in our lives, we will inevitably be recipients of our Grandmother’s favorite jeweled accessories. The question is…how do we incorporate these antiquated pieces into our modern styles?

Today’s Green Thought Thursday is all about how to answer this question. Dana, our resident jewelry maker, has found a simple way to turn some of her old, inherited jewelry into fun, stylish accessories all while reducing, reusing and recycling. One of the predicaments encountered when trying to update these vintage baubles, especially when it comes to earrings, is the old-fashioned clip-on style. While this type of earring definitely served its purpose at one time, it is simply outdated and uncomfortable. Armed with all of her jewelry crafting knowledge, Dana was able to switch out the tired old clip-ons for modern French wire style posts on a pair of her great grandmother’s earrings.

Dana, along with jewelry stores like Joint Venture Jewelry in Cary and Good Girls Studio in Raleigh, are revamping precious metals and helping to further the green effort all in the name of fashion. If you don’t want to alter the original design or style of your jewelry, there are still others ways to modernize your adornments that are just as eco-friendly. Try pairing just one of your vintage pieces with a current fashion trend or something timeless like a blazer or shift dress. Another idea is to wear your bijou against a blank canvas such as a simple black dress or plain shirt so that your jewelry really makes a statement. You can find really awesome antique jewelry here in Raleigh at the Antiques Emporium, but we also love websites like Etsy where you can find vintage jewelry of all shapes and sizes (and eras).

Grandma passed down her pearls because she knew a true classic never goes out of style. But making a classic style all your own? Now that is great fashion!
