Clairemont on MSNBC

July 25, 2011January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Marketing, Public Relationsbusiness makeover, MSNBC3 Comments on Clairemont on MSNBC

I love surprises. Today, I am one.

With Saturday’s issue of The News & Observer, the secret is out that I will be part of an episode of the MSNBC show Your Business. I will be joining my favorite business author, Mike Michalowicz who wrote The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, and other experts to give a North Carolina-based company a business makeover.

I’m looking forward to learning more about the company and its business goals in order to help the owners build supporting communications objectives and a communications strategy for traditional media relations and social media.  I’m off to meet them now. Wish me luck! –Dana

Meet Arden Van Vleck (what a name)!

July 22, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, The Clairemont Team1 Comment on Meet Arden Van Vleck (what a name)!

Did you know that the Clairemont team added another summer intern? If you work on our hall, you might know – her cheery, raspy voice is as distinctive as it is spunky. And to whom does this voice belong? Why, it’s Arden Van Vleck, and lucky for me, I had a chance to sit down and chat with her today. Here’s what she had to say…

So Arden, you grew up in the not-so-far-away Durham. Tell me what you think about how much Durham has changed.  It’s a pretty hip place now!

Oh yes! That’s a really good question. I remember when I was growing up in Durham. It was before they made all the cool renovations. It wasn’t until I left for college that they made it such a neat place. I mean, it had this stigma attached to it for years….It couldn’t have had more of a 180-degree transformation. Have you seen the tobacco district? It’s awesome, and it’s right next to my two favorite places, the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and Tyler’s Taproom.

Mmmm…Tyler’s Taproom – they have one in Carrboro, which leads me to neighboring Chapel Hill. How does Durham compare to Chapel Hill?

Chapel Hill is purely a college town whereas Durham has a big university but isn’t a college town. It’s hard for me to tell you which I like better – they’re just really different.

So how does downtown Raleigh compare?

I love Raleigh! I feel like it’s the perfect place for me during this stage of my life. Fun, young and lots of business professionals – it’s the next step. But there’s a lot more for me to learn about this place. It’s kind of a mystery town right now to me.

Going back to Chapel Hill, I know that you are a UNC graduate (go Heels)! Tell me about what you did while you were in school.

Well, I originally started off as an exercise and sport science major because I was interested in athletic training. But I was also interested in journalism ever since I worked for my high school newspaper. I eventually realized I didn’t want to do athletic training – it just wasn’t a good fit for me – and that’s when I decided to add on journalism.

Wow, that was a lot to take on.

I know, right! The more degrees the merrier! That’s what I told myself, anyway. I also did Spanish as a minor and took the PR track in journalism. What’s funny is that I didn’t even know what PR was at the time.

Really?

I guess I choose it because it sounded all-encompassing. Writing, social media, strategy – I love that it incorporates different components of communications.

And where do you see yourself going in the field?

I really like the idea of agency work. In my previous internship at the North Carolina Museum of Art, I learned a ton, but I also learned that I am interested in working with multiple clients, not just one.

And what do you think of interning at Clairemont?

Love it! Absolutely love it! I already feel like I am involved. I am not doing just a few small tasks on the side. I am jumping in and taking a part. Not to mention I love the welcoming, fun atmosphere – we get our work done, but we actually have a good time!

We’re so glad you like it! Outside of your internship here, what else do you?

Cheesecake! [Laughs] I mean, I work at The Cheesecake Factory! It keeps me pretty occupied. I like serving tables and love the fact that I get to hang out with my friends, who all pretty much work there, too. So going to work is like going to hang out with my friends.

And what about your free time?

Since it is summer, I’d have to say lately I’ve been going to the pool, making trips to the beach and hanging with my family. Oh, and eating!

Cheescake?

Surprisingly, I don’t eat cheesecake all the time.

I surely would….Anything else you would like to share with the public?

Well, about my voice….I had to have surgery on my throat in January. I had to have a polyp removed. That’s why I have such a raspy voice.

But we love that raspy voice of yours. It’s the signature Arden voice. We can always hear you before we spot you.

[Laughs her signature Arden laugh]

We think Arden agrees.

Green Thought Thursday: Flower Power!

July 21, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability1 Comment on Green Thought Thursday: Flower Power!

Our intern, the fabulous Miss Debbie Lambeth, wanted to jump in and share a green thought of her own today. Enjoy!

Most every day on my way to work at Clairemont, I pass a charming little garden right next door that is a part of Marbles Kids Museum. In that garden is a large solar-powered flower that is sure to catch your eye. It’s a tall orange and green metal flower with petals that spin based on the amount of solar energy the panels receive.

How does this flower get its power? There is a sign underneath the flower that does a great job of explaining how it works. To make a long story short, sunlight is made up of tiny bundles of energy called photons. When these photons hit a solar panel, electrons are released. The electrical current then flows up wires in the stem to power the motor and finally spin the flower.

And why does this solar power flower matter? Because solar panels just like these save energy! Tons of it! It’s hard to understand the savings in terms of kilowatt hours (kWh), so let’s think of savings in terms of money. While actual dollar savings can be hard to calculate because of the fluctuation of energy costs, most people who have made the switch to solar report a monthly savings of 50 to 90 percent in their energy bills. While solar panels are certainly an investment upfront, think of what you could save over the course of 10, 20 or even 30 years!

How’s that for a little flower empowerment?

Tuesday Mornings in Japan

July 20, 2011January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, In Our CommunityJapan, Triangle Business Journal, tsunami

For the last several months, Clairemont team members have been joining others in our business community on Tuesday mornings at the Triangle Business Journal in attempts to answer a complex question: How can we best help people in Japan living with the aftermath of March’s tsunami?

We have formed Project Kokoro, and we have adopted our first community in Japan to help. Many weeks we Skype with our committee members who are visiting Japan to give us a first-hand assessment of needs and others who will literally put the funds we raise into action.

This photo slideshow compiled by one of  our committee members who just returned from Japan will give you an idea of the ongoing hardships the people of Japan are facing and some of the issues we are hoping to address. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more information and photos as we announce the first project funded by Project Kokoro. In the meantime, please consider joining our efforts by making a donation.

Myrtle Monday — Postcards from New Friends

July 18, 2011January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Counselors Academy, InspirationalCounselors Academy, PRSA
Like Myrtle, I love my postcards!

When I gave my presentation, Myrtle Never Threw Away Her Postcards, at the PRSA’s Counselors Academy conference in May, I left the attendees with a homework assignment. I gave them blank Clairemont postcards to be used to write a purpose/mission statement or to send to someone, honoring the lost art of handwritten correspondence.

What a lovely surprise to have two of them returned to me with the most sincere thoughts about Myrtle and my presentation. Thank you, Missy Shorey and Paula Worthington! I also received handwritten notes about Myrtle from my dear friend, Abbie Fink and new friends, Sheryl Barto and Ray Artigue.

What an amazing feeling to get such positive feedback, and I know that Myrtle and all of her friends would be proud that in this digital age, some people still take time to put pen to paper.
