Green Thought Thursday: Going Green at the N.C. State Fair!

October 20, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, SustainabilityNC State Fair, Recycle
Last year's prize pumpkin! If you want to see this year's winner, head to the fair!

I can say for certain that this past Monday’s trip to the North Carolina State Fair (with my fellow co-worker Kate) was absolutely, without a doubt the most fun I’ve ever had at the fair. Not only did we over-indulge in greasy, delicious fried food (deep-fried Oreos, anyone?), but we also rode tons of rides, met plenty of good people and had a lot of good clean (and green) fun. And now, I want to share a few tips with you on how to do the same.

Tip #1: Get your tickets early. I know it’s a little late for this year’s fair, but the early bird specials are a great way to save some green. I also recommend still purchasing advance tickets online just to save you a little time from having to wait in lines

Tip #2: Take the bus. Public transportation is a green way to get to the fair, and with all of the parking expenses and heavy traffic, you won’t regret it. It’s practically like getting VIP treatment when you surpass all of the folks hiking from their parking spots and get dropped off right in front of the entry gate!

Tip #3: Bring canned food – get in free! Today and today only is Food Lion Hunger Relief Day, benefiting the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. If you bring four cans of food, you get into the fair for free!

Tip #4: Share food. Trust me when I say there’s no need to get a tray of fried green tomatoes for your very own (if you could eat more than two, I’d be genuinely impressed)! Be sure to share your treats with friends – there will be less waste in the end.

Tip #5: Recycle, of course! Sure, a trashcan may be closer, but taking the extra 100 steps to recycle your cans and bottles will go a long way. Think of how much waste is produced every year!

We’re wishing you all a very happy and safe time at the fair this year. If you have any more fun (or green) tips to share, we’d love to hear them. After all, who doesn’t “Love A Fair?”

Green Thought Thursday: OktoberBEST and the Pepper Festival

September 29, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability7 Comments on Green Thought Thursday: OktoberBEST and the Pepper Festival
If you think this looks like fun, then join me at Briar Chapel’s OktoberBEST this Sunday!

It’s Green Thought Thursday, so let’s celebrate…on Sunday! No, really.

This Sunday, Briar Chapel (client) is hosting OktoberBEST, a day of fun, games and friendly competitions, immediately followed by the Fourth Annual Pittsboro Pepper Festival, celebrating lots of things green.

Be sure to stop by between 1 to 4 p.m. for OktoberBEST and challenge me to a game of Wii Bowling. The winner will reign supreme as Briar Chapel’s best armchair athlete. Video games not your thing? Join us outside for a race down the obstacle course. Who knows? You could even be named the next backyard athlete champion!

And bring the rest of the family, dogs included! I most definitely will be stopping by the Pooch Park for a chance to test out Charley’s skills in the Canine Athletics competition. Winners from each competition can win a variety of prizes, including free tickets to the Pepper Festival, starting at 4:00 in Briar Commons, Briar Chapel’s newest park.

If you’ve never been to the Pepper Festival before, you’re in for a treat. Local farmers, local food, local chefs and local music — you’ll really go loco for local. And even better, all proceeds will benefit The Abundance Foundation, a local nonprofit that seeks to educate the community on sustainability through local food and renewable energy.

So riddle me this, faithful Green Thought Thursday readers — will I see you there? I sure do hope so!

Green Thought Thursday: I take my coffee green

September 1, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability3 Comments on Green Thought Thursday: I take my coffee green
I save my Larry’s Bean coffee sleeve so I can re-use it — isn’t it cute?

How many of you start each day with a fresh cup of coffee? From time to time, I surely do. And my favorite place to get it? At Marbles Kids Museum, where they serve up delicious cups of Larry’s Beans coffee on the daily. I love this coffee so much that I thought it would be a great topic for today’s Green Thought Thursday.

For those of you who’ve never heard of Larry or his beans, here’s the scoop: Larry, a Seattle transplant and coffee fanatic, began Larry’s Beans with the hopes of “making the world a better place.”  With more than 30 yummy blends, including my personal favorite, the Cowboy Blend, this coffee isn’t just good – it’s green.

So what makes Larry’s Beans so green? When he started the company, Larry made a commitment to using sustainable practices. In what he calls a “green-o-vated” facility, Larry and his crew use passive solar construction, active solar systems, radiant floors, zoned heating, composting and rainwater harvesting to minimize environmental impact. And don’t forget the ultra cool packaging – what Larry likes to call the biobag (it’s biodegradable) – and that incredibly sexy delivery bus, the Veggie Bus, that runs on vegetable oil (be sure to look for it at downtown Raleigh’s upcoming Hopscotch Music Festival).

Why, Larry’s Beans are so green, the company has earned the title as a certified B Corporation (that’s code for awesomely green). How’s that for a little jolt of (green) energy to start your morning? Kudos to all of you awesome folks at Larry’s Beans, a Raleigh company that we love!

Green Thought Thursday: Hats off To Hotel Indigo

July 28, 2011January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Sustainability

For those of you who are regular readers of our Green Thought Thursdays, you know that I typically don’t pen this post, as Josie is certainly our Queen of Green. How apropos that I found inspiration while working for a few days in Asheville, her  former home!

When I check into a hotel, one of the first things I do is make sure I have drinking water in the room. That is usually in the form of bottled water. What a wonderful surprise to walk in my room at Hotel Indigo and find a water carafe complete with a haiku with “filling station” instructions. (Who doesn’t love a haiku!)

Kudos to Hotel Indigo for its environmental practices! Combined with the hotel’s beautiful design and comfortable bedding, I will definitely be a repeat guest. And a well hydrated one at that!
