Myrtle Monday — What I've Learned from Myrtle's Postcards

May 23, 2011January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Counselors Academy, The Clairemont Team5 Comments on Myrtle Monday — What I've Learned from Myrtle's Postcards

A gigantic thank you to my fellow PRSA Counselors Academy members who recently attended my session during the group’s annual conference. What an honor to get to share with fellow agency owners and leaders what I’ve learned about communications from more than 80 postcards sent to a woman named Myrtle over the span of 50 years.

If you weren’t at the conference and would like to hear more about the magical Myrtle journey and what I’ve learned about promise, potential and people from the postcards, please email me at d@clairemontcommunications.com.

Good News for Garner — Go Scotty Go!

May 21, 2011January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, In Our CommunityAmerican Idol, Garner
Vote for Scotty!

Unless you are living under a rock, by now you’ve surely heard of Garner, North Carolina, thanks to 17-year-old Scotty McCreery who is one of two finalists vying for the American Idol title. And some of you might be thinking that Garner sounds familiar or you might even recall why it made national news nearly two years ago.

It seemed a bit ironic that the town of Garner’s best news in recent years — Scotty’s advancement to the final round of Idol — was featured on the front page of yesterday’s The News & Observer while the town’s worst news was featured on the front page of section B. Perhaps more ironic is that the final closing of the snack production plant in Garner will take place next week as many of us in North Carolina wait to see if our local star is named the big winner.

InSpired by Our Clients

Proud of Clairemont's First InSpire Awards!

Last week during the PRSA Counselors Academy conference, I was talking with other agency owners about the nature of our business not allowing much time for celebration of our successes because we rush from one deadline to the next. When I was creating the prosperity plan to launch Clairemont, I put in writing that we would take time to stop and do just that — celebrate our wins. So, despite the fact that Josie has already blogged about Clairemont’s night at the NCPRSA InSpire Awards, I want to recognize the hard work of our team, coupled with that of our incredible clients who share in the honors.

I’ve blogged before that an early mark of Clairemont’s success in setting out to effectively blend traditional communications and social media is the fact that all of our ongoing clients do in fact rely on us for this blend. Now, as another mark of accomplishment, our work has been recognized including best in category awards for Integrated Communications with Briar Chapel, Social Media with Thomasville, Websites/Blog with Drexel Heritage and Brochures with Drexel Heritage. Additionally, we received awards for events, community relations and a social media audit — with a grand total of 14 NCPRSA InSpire Awards. Not bad based on Clairemont’s first year in business, and the first time we were eligible to enter!

Thanks to our clients for giving us the opportunity to build such amazing programs with them and to the Clairemont team members who worked so diligently on the quality execution of our client strategies and the preparing of our award entries. Cheers!

Green Thought Thursday: A trip to the farmers market

May 19, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Sustainability1 Comment on Green Thought Thursday: A trip to the farmers market
A nice view of the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market

Buy local – it’s something I am constantly reminded to do, especially when I was living in Asheville (if you didn’t have some sort of “Buy Local” bumper sticker on your Subaru and/or Prius, you were a nobody). But it’s also something that I truly believe is the right thing to do.

This week, Debbie, Clairemont’s newest and awesome summer intern, and I took a trip to the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market. It was there that we had a chance to marvel over the (very) fresh fruits and veggies (since they’re local), hormone-free beef and poultry, specialty cheeses and free-range eggs, fresh cut flowers, artisan baked goods and cookies and cupcakes. Did I mention cupcakes? Good thing I forgot my cash this time – I would have been in trouble!

But in all sincerity, there are quite a few benefits of buying at your local farmers market, and I would like to share them with you. Sustainable Table put it simply and beautifully when they wrote, “There are countless reasons why buying local food is both rewarding and delicious, including enjoying the taste of fresh food, improved health and nutrition, environmental stewardship, support for family farms and rural communities and ensuring animal welfare.”

Need more convincing? Check out local nonprofit the Abundance Foundation or just head over to the farmers market and see it for yourself! The downtown market is hosted every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in City Plaza, a pretty hip central location downtown (Flava Flav himself strutted his stuff in City Plaza during Hopscotch). And if you go, be sure to tell us what you think!

An InSpirational night!

May 13, 2011January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerAwards, Blog, Case Studies
We\’re so proud of our client work, including with the lovely ladies of Briar Chapel!

Great news everyone – the 2011 NCPRSA InSpire Awards ceremony was a great success!

For those of you who read my previous blog, you know that I was rather nervous about attending the InSpire Awards dinner Wednesday night – it was, after all, my very first time attending. But after recognizing several familiar faces, including our friends from Addressable Media, Creative Associates and Decibel Management, I felt pretty at ease…that is, until it was time to announce the winners!

When NCPRSA President Sarah Lamm walked up to introduce the evening’s emcee, Angela Hampton of ABC 11, my stomach was in knots. I couldn’t believe it – I haven’t felt like that since my middle school MATHCOUNTS competition. But once Angela started calling out the winners, my uneasiness quickly subsided – we won stuff!

It was such a great feeling to repeatedly hear “Clairemont Communications” over the speakers. Our team had put such hard work into every tactic and campaign! All in all, we came home with five honorable mentions, five awards of excellence and four best in category wins, including one Silver Award!

It was a great night for me (and the rest of Clairemont) and is something I will never forget! Now…it’s time to start working on 2012’s awards!
